But I don't see many on this team that will be ready to move on after this year. Bash me all you want. Call it one bad game. Yes the players will continue to improve, but not enough to leave after this year. Skal may have the furthest to go. Needs strength something that won't be any better by the end of the year. Briscoe has strength but is very inconsistent shooting and can't hit freethrows consistently. Ulis is 5'8" who plays bigger but he is still 5'8". Murray maybe is our best prospect who is a great individual player but is seemingly having a hard time playing in a team concept. Lee brings energy and is looking better on his offensive game but doesn't dominate a thing. Someone may take a chance on him late in the second round. Alex is still Alex. You look at him and say a can't miss NBA body, but can't knock down shots from the outside on a regular basis, and has trouble finishing anything around the basket other than a dunk. Gets blocked way too many times for a guy his size. I know it is early. I know it is one game, but as of right now the NBA is a long ways off for these guys. The dreaded P word could be back next year IMO!

Was everyone looking at Ulis last night to right the wrongs? He was good in spurts, but man, we are sloppy on both ends of the court.

Defense comes first, and Cal will have to fix that first.

We have 5 new guys coming in (at least). Not enough schollies if all were to stay. They will be leaving.

I felt Alex was fouled on several close in shots which weren't called while every time Parker took a close in shot Alex got called for a foul for guarding him.

I'm stumped to come up with a P word. Pthisis? Petunia? Paranormal? Plangent? Putt-putt?

Anyone who thinks guys like Skal and Murray will be back needs to put down the crack pipe.

And, besides that, they CAN'T all come back. We've already recruited five new guys and are maxed out to the scholarship limit. We need several guys to move on or there won't be schollies available for next year's class. The OP didn't exactly think this out before posting.

Are you gonna kick the current kids off the roster if they want to come back? You can't force them out the door. Will Cal advise Murray, Skal, Briscoe, and Ulis to go, possibly. But he can't force them to leave if they don't want to, and he wouldn't force them out either.

That's a good point. So what would Cal have to do if several of those kids said "im not ready and would like to stay"?

That's a great question. I would think he may advise players like Willis and Hawkins to transfer? I'm not sure though. He would obviously figure it out, but it would be interesting.

No, the answer is he will push those kids out the door to make room for the incoming crop.

Umm, YES you can. Where've you been? Scholarships are renewable annually, nobody's guaranteed a four year ride. And coaches do it all the time. Every year plenty of kids get told to move on so that a scholly spot will be available for a freshman recruit. This is nothing new.

And, regardless, the fact remains: simple math tells us several must leave. The rules only allow 13 scholly spots. We're maxed out. We've promised spots to 5 new recruits. You don't see the obvious problem here?

One major flaw in your thinking. The NBA doesn't draft you for what you can do now, they draft on future potential.

I obviously know scholarships are on a year by year basis, but who of this years freshman class scholarship is he going to pull if they want to come back? This won't end up being a problem bc a combination of Skal/Murray/Briscoe/Ulis/Poythress/Lee will be gone. But if they wanted to come back and said we aren't going to go to the NBA, are you gonna pull one of their scholarships? No. He would have to pull Hawkins/Willis scholarship or tell them to go somewhere else.

But this convo is useless because some of them will be gone.

I know they do draft potential and I think our guys may right the ship. Skal and Murray and Briscoe have the most potential. but Ulis Poythress and Lee are what they are. In fact as UK fans I think we tend to believe all our players have the potential to be Lottery picks. We may not have any this year. I hope I am wrong.

Folks need to quit thinking T. Ulis is NBA material. He is either a 4 yr player or overseas. The reality is he does nothing to set himself apart from other PGs while having the biggest slight - his size - that will keep him out. It is not that he is not good enough, but at 5'8", he is as defensive liability in the league.

The other 3 are gone. One game will not change that and the NBA drafts on potential not the finished product. Each of the others were highly rated in the draft prior to the season starting and nothing has changed in the eyes of the NBA people.

Did Alex graduate last summer? If so is he a grad student this year,, or what? If he's still on scholly,, we have 12 scholarship players right ,, Floreal is also on scholly I believe.. I'm assuming Wynyard will be the 13th when he gets here if used? Or how will that work?

Pineapple? Pavlova? Peanut Butter? Pie?

Crap, now I'm hungry....

Poy would still count against the scholly limit even if he's graduated, grad student status makes no difference if the guy's still getting his way paid.

We have all 13 spots filled right now, which means at least 5 of those 13 guys will have to give up their spot. Two seem obvious--Poy and Floreal (returning to walk on)--and the other three will likely be Skal, Murray and Briscoe going pro.

And, of course, we could easily end up with even more extra spots if Ulis and/or Lee also leave.

You're right. Floreal would go back to walk on status, plus his Dad is the track coach so he probably gets help anyways. With Alex leaving it drops us to 11. Add 5, makes 16, so 3 players will have to leave. I don't see a problem.

He might have to take a lesson from Cream.
I think, at the least, Skal, Murray, and Poy are gone. Skal is no where near ready but in 3 or 4 yrs he will be a pretty good pro.

As has been said many times on this and other forums, "Trust in Cal." He knows what he is doing and this one game won't define the season; unless it is used as a motivator to drive Cal's points home. There will be more losses but even more growth. WE WILL BE IN THE HUNT.
