I Believe Cal was Blindsided By Who Declared

The problem is the NBA drafts based on potential. That's why so many teams screw it up on draft day. A player may not gain any potential with another year in college, but he can gain a ton in confidence and maturity. The difference between 18 and 19 can be a lot more than one year's difference in our ages. But then you look at Russ Smith and Montrezl Harrell and you wonder if an extra year actually hurt them.

It's a tough call for these kids to make, so many of them side with "money in my pocket now".

People just cover for everything Cal says. he wasn't blindsided by Teague at all. It's just a rumor that has started in hindsight rom the terrible season and Teague's pro career flaming out. Hell, Teague was projected in the teens by almost all the mock draft services on draft day.

I disagree, from what I heard he was a bit surprised regarding Teague and possibly Lamb. And regardless of the bravado, I would bet he thought he had Booker one more year as well. Devin had one month of great shooting and shot up the draft boards.

brianpoe, I think you have it correct on this issue. I've always heard the same thing about Teague and Lamb and remember quotes from Cal, himself, saying he wouldn't be caught in this situation again. So, I expect that he was anticipating those guys coming back and was surprised when they didn't. As for Booker, he is the one I most agree with on this year's team in that regard. He was still very young and had so much more to work on and I feel he was one of the players Cal's "man's league" remark was aimed at.

like it or not the problem with guys declaring at UK as opposed to anywhere else is that Cal by his own admission won't ever discourage it or give the this is why you should stay side. From his own mouth on the Mike Francesca show after we won the title he did a hour long interview where he said, he gathers feedback, tells the players and parents what it is, gives them contact info of the NBA people, and let's them choose for themselves what they should do without his coercion one way or the other. After he said that Fracensca said well John surely with all the guys you have that leave after every year you can't believe they're all ready to which he replied you're right. Francesca then said well what do you tell the NBA when they inquire about those guys? Cal's response, I lie like hell, tell them they're the best guy I ever coached and are going to be future all stars. So, there in lies the problem, when Cal knows Teague, Lamb, Goodwin, Young, Harrison, Harrison, Johnson, Booker, Lyles, etc... shouldn't go he would never say you know it may be valuable for you to come and learn x and y and be in a better position to contribute when you get to the NBA. He's just you want to go? Ok, let me help you get drafted as high as I possibly can, that's a noble thing but I wonder sometimes if telling some of these kids it's all sunshine and rainbows doesn't hurt them sometimes. Sure an elite of the elite guy like Noel, Bledsoe, Knight, Randle who could of benefited from coming back but didn't need to, to ensure a long and fruitful NBA career it won't but a guy who may be able to have a 10 year career as journeyman starter or solid back up like the list I mentioned above I think not shooting them straight that they aren't ready can hurt them in the long run. Just my 2 cents though.

Mircle, very good post. I do, however, think that Lyles is as ready for the peos as any of the current crop of potential millionaires. He is an excellent stretch 4 candidate and I predict he will be a long time, successful pro. The only thing I would have concerns about is his decision making and improvement there, imo, will come quickly.

Your 100% correct. WCS let himself and the team down in the most important game of the year but that was his MO. Highlight ESPN Top 10 play one game and disappear the next. he said it himself.
Unfortunately too much emphasis is put on the ESPN Top 10 highlights. What are they? Almost all are of a guy who can jump, or is very tall, dunking the ball. Something that takes little skill. You can have one high-flying stuff and do nothing the rest of the game and be on ESPN at night.

i don't think Cal ever envisioned 7 players declaring for the draft off this past year's team. I think when he found out was when he said, The NBA is a man league.

In other words, some of those who declared are not ready but did it anyway.

What do my fellow posters think?
Calipari was telling recruits all year long that he would lose 6-7 players off this team to the draft.

Teams are using that against us on the recruiting circuit? You mean Mississippi State is telling Newman that UK isn't good enough to win a title. UNLV, Illinois, etc. I don't think kids are that dumb...
