How to beat Kentucky strategy

Against UGA our outside shooting was no bueno. ..at 24%…

Against Clemson was 25.9% and another loss…

Against Ohio State you guessed it…another horrendous 3 pts shooting 18% and another L.

It looks like, some coaches figured out that chasing us on the perimeter and slowing the pace of the game are keys to win against Kentucky.

It’s interesting that these are teams that are not necessarily spectacular offensively but they figure out that their offense is better than our defense and if they make us in 2 point shooting team we are done.

Our big wins come against teams that thought that can outscore us : Duke, Gonzaga, Florida….

Meanwhile , Duke changed its philosophy and are putting emphasis on defense and are more balanced now.

Florida ‘s coach after the loss on Saturday, mentioned that his strategy was wrong allowing us to score from outside, but that will be an easy fix if they would play us again in the Sec tournament . He also mentioned that other coaches in Sec will try that strategy against us and expose us. It seems that uga Coach just did that.

Considering our inability to stop basket penetration or rebound, or that our guys don’t seem to like driving to the basket and actually make the bunnies , Coach Pope has a game strategy issue on his hands …. Will he be able to figured it so we are become a more balanced team , being able to win games in other ways than out scoring teams from 3?

What do you say?

Gonzaga it will not change the playing style with same Coach , so they will never win a national title, that’s I didn’t mention them as change strategy.

I hope Pope will show some flexibility and more importantly have the tools to improve this team but also the other teams to come.

Very, very good analysis. Our weaknesses are being exploited even by mediocre teams like OS, UGA and Clemson.

I said this early in the season when people were talking Final Four and a title that we were vulnerable to bad shooting nights.

I was ridiculed for that. People were saying we had too many good shooters to go completely cold.

Some people need to watch some college basketball.

Live by the three, die by the three!

I think Pope was intentionally stretching that game at the end not to comeback but to see what he has in a press.

This may be the counter to teams trying to slow us up.
I like the press because it seems to raise our defensive intensity. Sadly, tonight it was only about a 1 or 2 on a scale of 10 to begin with.

YES … Especially when you are not a strong defensive team …

All this is spot on, but we still could've been competitive if we are physically, rebound, and defend! There is no reason to not move our feet on defense. Make them shoot over you! And box out and rebound the ball!

In theory, when a team is slowing you down , you should try to do the same to them so they don’t have the full clock shot. Against uga he was trying to get some steals but our full press needs work because the second pass was always open.

I am surprised that he is not using Butler and Oweh to take turns on opposing PG full game to slow them down. Perhaps he doesn’t want to get Butler tired or foul trouble since Kerr Kriisa is injured…

However, I agree that Pope should use more the press.

It’s easy to see how we are being game planned for.

Not every team can do it. But the plan is to crowd us on the perimeter and get physical with our post players.

We have to make teams pay for over playing us on the perimeter.

UGA was willing to take the chances of fouling.

When the fouls didn’t come it emboldened them and made us tentative.

Perfect storm for them.

It did not help that in the UGA game the officials let the game get really physical which is also a UK weakness.

Simple recipe really. Commit a crap ton of fouls while getting called for very few of them. Send UK's best defenders to the bench early for weak to bogus fouls.

Not a great strategy when we are statistically a really poor 3-pt shooting team.

I did the same and was told the same thing. We would go cold even if this team was as good of a 3 point shooting team as people thought. But it has not been that team. It's not an extended cold streak anymore, it's just who we are. We have Brea, who disappears at times, and not a tremendous amount more from 3. If you remove him we're shooting 31.5% from 3 on the season.

I know we are thin without kerr! But I would like to see "some"full court press against teams like GA.
Use a combination of zone trapping presses to create turnovers, and man to man to just wear them out! Disrupt there rhythm ect.

In football when your defense isn't good enough to play them straight up, you use a combination of blitzs to disrupt the offense and it's flow! At this point you either improve defensively, or you have to start attacking them knowing you might give up a few easy baskets!

Yep. You have to have something to fall back on when the shots aren’t falling. Pitino would turn the heat up on the press to create easy baskets. Tubby’s teams were really good at half court defense and would use it to create offense. Calipari’s teams would bludgeon people on the offensive boards. Can’t be a one trick pony.

It’s interesting that against Duke and Gonzaga , Pope won by making defensive adjustments. Florida we just went nuts from 3.

On the 3 losses when the other team took the 3 away and slowed down the game , Pope did t make the defensive adjustments timely…

Hopefully he looks back at the games and practice different defenses and pressures to counter when teams have a strategy like Clemson, Ohio state or Georgia.

I also have noticed we aren't pushing the tempo like we were earlier! Many instances when we walk the ball up! The ball movement is off as well. We don't pass the ball like we use to. Also Robinson is giving us nothing! Not defending, not rebounding.
When your shot isn't falling you get a put back,or get to the line. All around they are playing soft .
And as much as I like Pope, he is coming across to soft! With players and refs!
