How long until the "Barnhart was forced to hire Pope" cries begin? Sadly this is not really sarcasm. That "bitter people" being discussed in the other thread as some of these folks. Barnhart is their version of "orange man bad." Nothing MB has done has made them happy.

Will any of them FINALLY agree that MB actually does know what he is doing. Is there a single one of us that had Coach Pope on their personal radar screen? Certainly not on mine. In fact, all of our teams in men's and women's sports are in good hands.

Can we start to appreciate that we are good hands with Mitch Barnhart?

I largely do agree with you but don’t like that Mitch values all of the athletic programs so much. I’m admittedly of the “we are a basketball school” camp but I do think Mitch isn’t as bad as people say

Not sure I agree with this post as it specifically relates to Pope, but there are a lot of people who call for Barnhart to be fired at the drop of a hat. They seem to have something against him that isn't based in reality.

Barnhart is pretty garbage on contracts. And I don't like how he tends to hold onto coaches when it's clear as day. They aren't turning it around. He also signed off on those awful logo changes in 2016, lol. Credit for the Kenny Brooks and Pope hires, though.

When you’re talking about AD that’s been here as long as Mitch, those seem to be very minor grievances

As a fan I was ready to press the red button on Mitch as was most of the fanbase when Pope was hired. Sometimes you gotta see the egg on your own face and that’s where I am. Mitch was right when few were

Well, the Football team being in good hands is debatable at this moment in time, but as a whole and where the football program was pre-Stoops, yeah, that can't be labeled a bad hire. Stoops in an eerily similar situation as Cal was at the moment having lost the faith of the fan base. Kinda hoping for a similar outcome.

I believe Mitch is slow to make decisions and he hands out horrible contracts.

The hire of Calipari, and Stoops was a slam dunk and it appears Pope will be as well. But it still doesn't take away from the above.

UK should be a program where a coach needs to be able to show immediate results and continued success. Coach Cal having a losing record and absolute failures in March should of got him canned much sooner. But instead he got to walk and dictate his own future because of the contract situation. Stoops is also getting this same luxury but he should be fired.

Stoops and Cal I believe are two entirely different situations. When it comes to basketball, we are Kentucky. When it comes to football, unfortunately we are Kentucky

Does that include the vacated wins?

Well yes and no.. I get where your coming from but I don't have any sympathy from Stoops when he's tried to leave UK the last couple years. But he wants to complain about not having enough NIL money.

Why would a booster pony up for a coach who has one foot out the door and the results are going the opposite direction in a much stronger/deeper SEC?

That’s a different conversation. I’m also not happy with Stoops but that’s not on Mitch.

What would make anyone think that MB "knows" what he's doing? He's mismanaged contracts with the two major revenue generating sports. He hired Joker, BCG for goodness sakes, Stoops (claiming that "no one else" wanted the UK job, which was BS). After the Calipari BB school comments, Mitch rushed in to extend the Stoops contract to match what Cal was being paid ... a reckless and ill-advised decision ... down right Stoopid. He was pressured to offer Hurley when he truly wanted to hire Scott Drew which would have been a huge mistake. I'll admit that I didn't see Pope on the radar but it turned out to be the perfect hire, as I see it today. MB's primary responsibility is to prudently manage FB and BB. His track record there isn't all that great as he spends contract monies recklessly for coaches that cannot justify their salaries, apart from Pope. So, no I can't say that UK athletics is in good hands under MB. If he had gone after Pope from the beginning "knowing" then what all of us have come to learn now, then that would have been impressive. We got lucky. Did Mitch offer Pope just because he knew he would definitely say yes after two high profile rejections. Did he really do his homework and look at the system Pope runs and how he builds his rosters? I personally think Mitch just got lucky, like the rest of BBN. It really shouldn't be that way considering what these people are being paid.

If MB has a downfall it is these asinine contracts for coaches. Cal stayed well beyond what he should’ve and now Stoops is as well. Stoops was good here but I think he has gone as far as he can. The Pope hire, I’m not sure on how that went down. Was it strictly a MB hire or was he advised? I don’t know. Either way it looks like a great hire for UK. I’m not willing to throw a parade for MB because of his contracts but I do believe he has had some good coaches while he was here. He just needs to be able to get better contracts and fire people quicker than he does.

The same people mad he gave the contracts would have been just as mad if he didn’t. If Stoops had went to a bigger program when the name was on the rise, fans would have been blah blah blahing about how Mitch doesn’t care about football and on and on. I’m old enough to have seen the fans throw punches from both angles. As for Cal in 2019, I’m sorry but I don’t think had the leverage or frankly the choice. If Cal had went to UCLA and won titles, Mitch would be done for eternally

wTF does this begin right after BEAR BRYANT?

It’s everyone after Curci. Bear is unquestionably the best we have had but most of us weren’t old enough to watch back then. If you were, great!

The point is, and it isn’t debatable, we don’t have the history or prestige as a football program, to demand as much as we do with basketball

Yeah I have the scar tissue and don’t have any illusions about our football program. I just think Bryant earned his way to a mention on any list of Kentucky football coaches that long.

You can't really argue that Mitch has done some good with upgrades and minor sports. the major sports he has been a disaster ,and not proactive in getting rid of under performing coaches with outrages contracts too . The pope hire was awesome . This alone may just get him back in good graces with the fan base .
