How intense the pressure would be if we had taken down Wooden in '75

I was reading that article from Kevin Grevey and he spoke about his days at UK and how close we were to only being behind UCLA one title. His conversation with Wooden was not as cordial as I would have expected either after that season.

Can you fathom the pressure each year our coach would be under to finally tie UCLA?

Saying that, does Cal get us to within one title of UCLA before he leaves? This is a high bar to attain at this stage if he could get us 2 more titles before he calls it quits. Currently, he's 1-1 in title games here. It is indeed a tossup when you get to that moment.

Having lived through the ucla era, I don't have a sense of urgency to "dethrone" them. To me, they are like duke and a few others....they had a great run but once the coach responsible for that run is gone, they will return to their proper place in the pecking order. As good as they were, they still don't run with the big dogs (IMO the big dogs in bball are Ky, unc and to a slightly lesser extent Kansas)

Do you have a link to the article? I'd like to read that.

during the woodencheater days, the media, ncaa and zebras were all intent on aiding and abetting the lowlife cheater.

woodencheater and unccheaters are the 2 WORST rules breakers in ncaa history---and to date, both maintained a "stay out of jail" card.

wooden should have been stripped of about 8 titles---and unccheaters about 5.

two dirty peas made from the mold.

Agree, it would be nice to catch them but the era in which they won the most of their titles is so far removed from what we know of college basketball today that we are talking apples and oranges.

The UCLA machine that brought players there no doubt paid them and handed out benefits like candy, some argue that Wooden didn't know such things were going on but that is like saying Pitino didn't know about the strippers and hookers.

UK has been part of college basketball history and a relevant standard in the sport since the 40's and continues to set the standard in this new age.I wouldn't think of trading our legacy for theirs regardless of the number of titles

How can you not mention Puke. They have won two NC in Cal's time here.

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

the part about wooden yelling at the refs once he knew the cameras were off for commercials. i wonder what lesson for success that was? [sick]

Grevey could flat out shoot.

Coach Hall once said he knew there was no way they were winning that game once Wooden announced retirement.

Grevey's chapter in Ryan Clark's book "Game of My Life" was very critical of Wooden. He felt like it was very selfish of him to make it about himself the day before the title game.

I'd be more interested if Louisville doesn't choke away that semi final game, how could would a UK vs UofL national title have been?
