How Far Does Cal Have to Take This Team to Win Back Some Benefit of the Doubt?

Are you kidding? It's over for me with Cal. I've been doubting him since 2018. If this team goes far, it will be the team taking Cal there. He does no coaching.
If he starts beating ranked teams more often people might start to think about coming back to him. Gonna take winning ultimately. Thats how you start.
Winning it all would go a long way to cleaning up the mess from the past few years. That said, a Final Four at minimum is needed.
So just asking questions as if no one's answered them? Cal is done here. He's not winning another title, anywhere. Even if he were to make the Final Four, his body of work for quite some time does not justify remaining employed at UK. Lots of teams / schools fire their coaches after a strong finish simply because going forward that coach is not a good fit.
It's the totality of the season.
Give me a GOOD regular season. Earn a 1 or 2 seed. Get to at least the Elite 8. And look like an actual quality basketball team while doing it.

The Cats would have to win it all this year. UK is going on 12 years without a title. On the surface, that doesn't seem terrible in relation to UKs history when it comes to winning championships.
But when you factor in the immense talent that Cal has had in his tenure, as well as the results from the last 3 years...it is championship or PLEASE LEAVE.

If he pulls a rabbit out of the hat, and wins the title, I can forgive a lot of the mess though. That would also put him second in UK coaches, even though a lot won't admit it but he'd be the only other coach not named Rupp to win mulitple titles.

I HOPE Cal wins a championship this season. And then I HOPE he leaves.
Final 4 and another Championship within 3 years.

Now hoping for one is one thing but expecting one is another. I hope we win it all every year but I’m a realist and know better
No he won’t because history says he can’t sustain it and his mouth and treatment of his position says he will screw it up every time. Like it or not he’s incapable of making things right permanently. He’s a deadman walking as far as his job goes. He lost his support, media, boosters etc and thinking he can add his political views was a kiss of death as well. The only reason he is here now is because someone gave him a gift of a lifetime. At no point in history of the University has his actions been tolerated by any other coach.

He needs to win the national title. It's been 12 years next spring. It's time to win or retire or move on and let a younger guy take his chances.

As a OAD tournament, the NCAA-T does depend a lot on luck and getting hot at the right time.
I mean which is a better SEASON, 2022 #2 seed but lose in 1st round, or 2014 #8 seed losing in Final? It's debatable. What if 2014 had lost in F4 (1 game sooner), or if 2022 had won vs the 15 but then lost to the 7/10 seed.
So, I would agree a 1 or 2 seed to at least E8 (maybe F4), OR a worse seed definitely F4 maybe NT.
Agree with others, we also need to see more quality/ranked wins (>.500).
He needs to leave Kentucky and go away so we can get a decent coach back at UK. I've had enough of his inability to coach in today's college game.

Well then, the good/bad news is he has zero chance of winning the championship so the argument is moot. Honestly it’s more likely we have a losing season than a championship.
You’re probably right. He has stated that he wants to win a championship while starting 5 freshman. This year is likely his last chance to do so

Reaching a Final Four after 12 years is not unreasonable for the "gold standard" of college basketball.
Elite 8 is the least.
Especially when he is making $9 million/year!!!
Expecting a Final 4 should be considered a NECESSITY after the past 3 seasons!!
If this team starts off 20-0 and a number one ranking, a lot of people will forgive Cal for everything.
I'll be highly excited, and will give credit where it's due, but he's got a lot of ground to make up.

Lot of good that 2 seed did us. It was the lowest 2 and I think everyone had us as an upset pick. We did NOT look good heading into the tourney that season. Our offense was toast.

-look like a contender and beat teams your supposed to beat at a high rate. Part of this is not sh*ting the bed when our bracket falls apart for us.
-win a good amount of your tough games. No shame in losing to a great Auburn or Arkansas team at their place sometimes. Its a tough conference. Better not get dominated and embarrassed.
-be a top 4 seed in March. No excuse for UK to not finish the year being in the top 15 or so.
-if you get beat in March, it better be to a good team and another contender, not St Peter's or Kansas St. If you hit the elite 8 and get beat by a 1 or 2 seed that's as good as you, it happens. Just don't embarrass the uniform while doing it.

It can only be a Final Four, with a team the next year that stays in the top 10. If he goes to the Final Four without winning it all, loses everyone, and then has a 22ish win season, the fans will keep applying the pressure.
