How did the UNC Wheels for Heels program work?

Fats Thomas, an ex-con, worked for two boosters (dentists, right?) and used some woman as a middle man to rent the cars, which were rented for long periods of time. None of this can be denied especially with the records and the tickets the cars got at UNC's gym. Multiple players were involved in this scandal.

P.J. just took the fall for it. Incredible that teams have had to vacate for less.

I need to be educated.
Fats Thomas was a booster of the program. He supplied high end rentals to the players. Well, at least to PJ Hairston. It all came to light when PJ Hairston was involved in an incident where drugs and a gun was pitched from one of said vehicles at a traffic stop. Folks began to dig after that and discovered numerous parking tickets that he'd gotten using different vehicles.

UNC refused to provide any details about the numerous parking tickets that were handed out to athletes during that time, as I recall. Anyone looking at that data could easily discover that the violations were going on during the season and athletes were being provided cars.

Keep in mind that UNC never asked for PJ to be reinstated. It is OBVIOUS to even a moron that UNC was afraid of what might come out.

Nothing to see here. Everyone knows that UNC is above reproach. It's sickening.

Funny, I have a buddy who is a dentist in NC. He and his papa. Big time boosters to the program. Both have assured me that no way in hell will there ever be a punishment for the men's basketball program in Chapel Hill. They don't deny the academic fraud, but actually laugh about it.

Before we played UNC, UNC fans were on this board basically saying the same thing. They admit to the fraud but say it is no big deal. We had some UK fans stupid enough to believe them and thought it was "nice" of them to drop by and chat bball.

Not fans then. Why I hate UNC - it's not the actual basketball team, the coach, or the players. It's the fan base. They are so arrogant. They're better than you. This is the mentality of them all. Even my buddy - he's an ass. Arrogant bitch. Matter of fact, I don't really even like the dude. That's a revelation. Let me back track a bit - I do hate the coach, my bad. Cheater of all cheats, just like his predecessor.

This is just the tip of the iceberg with them. Their cheatingg goes back for at least 60 years . They were involved with the point shaving scandal in the sixties .DES cover up numerous DWI's by Phil Ford while he was an assistant. Had two players assault an N C State fan in a bar in Raleigh.A player was sleeping with Ford's wife. There are numerous other instances while all the time claiming their moral superiority

So Kentucky almost gets the death penalty for an envelope of cash that came "opened" in L.A. by a Emory employee/UCLA fan that decided to go to the LA Times with zero proof of who did it or if it was even in there before it "opened." Plus, a suspicious SAT score that got a kid permanently ineligible but hey, over 20 years of academic fraud, mixing with donors to wear their mouth guards and having a program that supplies cars for players that results in no punishment and two Final Fours= totally okay.

Got it.

If school presidents and AD's weren't such pussies, they should take all vacated banners and put those things right back up. I'd also never cooperate with the NCAA over anything again. Duke didn't cooperate in the Lance Thomas thing and it just went away.

But the media is right. There's totally no bias for these programs.

Not cooperating only works if your institution is in Chapel Hill or Durham.

How did it work?

You sign your UNC financial aid papers, Ol' Roy gives you a pat on the rump, and points to the ex con who will take care of you during your time in Chapel Hill, and the department head who will arrange your fake classes.

Agreed, the fans are the worst! I have lived in NC since '92 and the holier than thou approach is sickening. If all BBN could just experience it for the last week...

North Carolina is a very dirty Program .... I really don't see how UofL could get smacked too hard honestly if the NCAA is only going slap on the wrist UNC... but that's what i think will happen.... UofL vacates some games and suspends pitino and UNC will vacate no games and probably have no punishment ... i don't know, I can't see NCAA even giving a slap on the wrist. How would they justify not full punishment if they are going to punish, because the crime is the greatest in college basketball history in my eyes.... They were able to keep players eligible through false grades/courses for almost 30 years .. that's a pretty big advantage. Recruiting kids, and the kids know ...let's not act like they wouldn't, that UNC*** was the place to go and just play basketball and not worry about the school part, the studying part, the part that everyone hates.... Hell i hated it and i was a straight A student.

None of this is true...just ask those UNC fans. Besides, if this was true you know eSPN would be all over it non-stop 24 hours a day during the NCAAT...they would even interrupt their NFL coverage...

I completely forgot about that. And he had some bogus BS position too. What was that guy's name? Never mind. It's Will Graves.

Video coordinator. The house was Roy's "second" house in Chapel Hill. Or actually it was the first one he and his wife bought when he took the UNC job, then after several years they bought a bigger mansion. I guess Roy kept it for rental property to help with the payments on the palace. I think the place Graves was living in was about a $700k property.

I believe Graves was actually booted off UNC after 2 or 3 years for failing whiz quizzes. Don't know why Deb wasn't grading them. And as coincidentally as it somehow is, the reason Graves was found to be living in Roy's "rental", was that he was busted for smoking weed in the house. Cops knocked on the front door answering a call from a neighbor concerned about something. Graves answered the front door and I guess a Spiccoli van cloud rolled out the door.

So this was to buy him off so he wouldn't speak about their corruption.

Louisville has tried to deflect the cost of the strippers to say that they are allowed to spend x amount of dollars on a recruit when he is visiting and they didn't exceed that amount. They did this in hopes of distracting from the larger issue. UNC has done the same. They have tried to argue that the academics is a university issue and not an NCAA issue and that they gave the same treatment to all students all in hopes the NCAA will overlook the fact they were giving players impermissible benefits that would cause those banners to come down.

Not just this but Fats was a known drug dealer. People can assume that by him "loaning" cars to players in which they "cruise" to Durham with drugs and guns, that they are simply "joyriding" but I'm not sure why anyone didn't investigate to see if they weren't a little more involved in the drug trade.

Beyond that, Fats' girlfriend at the time ran a facility in Durham which it was later revealed that UNC used to bus players to in order to get them classified as ADHD etc. (instructing them to intentionally fail the tests) in order to allow them more assistance in their classes and when taking exams etc.

Don't think that's been seriously looked at by anyone either.

UNC is not happy right now with the Wainstein report but that was a very limited scope and just the tip of the iceberg. There's a ton of shady stuff which UNC & the NCAA have ignored to date.

Yes. This is exactly why there will be no pilunishment. This gives the NCAA just the amount of wiggle room they need to look the other way. Bilas has been adamant about arguing this very point for a year. Nothing is going to come of this scandal. It's a University academic issue. I say, if this is the argument, the accreditation of school should come into play. Make sense.

"Fats Thomas". Ex-con. "Wheels for Heels"?

[laughing]

Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. You simply can't.

I live in NC and this morning, a Duke fan was giving a Cheat fan (who sits directly in front of me) some gruff about wearing his Cheat shirt today before the final four. As the convo went on, I chimed in that I hope they get beat and get taken down due to the scandal(s). He came back with 'ain't nothing gonna happen to us'.

Oh, please let Oregon or Gonzaga/USCjr take them out so I don't have put up with him crowing about those plucky a**, arrogant b*stards!!!!

Condensed version - Fats Thomas was the Sam Gilbert of UNC. Only much much seedier. I remember seeing photos of him at parties ( at 21+ nightclubs too, when the players were underage) with several UNC players that were quickly scrubbed from the Web and disappeared.

It's unbelievable that UNC basically threw PJ Hairston under the bus and got this whole thing swept away.

Someone must have paid Rashad McCants to keep him quite. He went from not shutting up like LaVar Ball to not being heard from again like Richard Simmons. :joy:

And if I remember correctly, the guy had like 4 felony convictions and never spent a day in jail. That state is a cesspool of corruption.

When I was in college we were playing a couple games around the corner from Chapel Hill and went out to a club called Kryptonite where my best friend got into it with some UNC fans. 3 of us were Kentucky boys so he started yelling naming off each of our coaches and the national championships they won. I thought we were gonna throw down until our 6'8" power forward walked up. Their fans are on par with Louisville fans and Tennessee football fans.
