How about Barker?

Both these QB's are above average. even in the SEC. In the open practice both were very sharp, but i felt like the edge was to Pat. Make no mistake about it Ky has 2 very good QBs and there would be little or no drop off from one to the other. All the folks around me were singing Pat's praises early in the game when the focus was on high gear. When the intensity dropped it dropped for the TEAM as a hole, not just Pat. Panic is not a good trait for anyone! Let's not throw the baby out with the wash just yet.

I couldn't care less what they do in the NFL . Kentucky plays college football . And despite off field problems , those two were GREAT college players .

And I guess his decision making and play has gotten him on the field at UK in his two years here? The other two played at much better football schools than UK. You take the guys who make bad decisions and I'll take the mature leaders out there all day.

I'm not saying I think Barker is better, but I'm surprised he didn't get some snaps earlier in the 3rd quarter Saturday b/c the coaches had stated they wanted him to play some "meaningful" snaps.

I wouldn't have even been surprised if he had seen a series in the 2nd quarter.

Towles himself said he didn't make some of the throws he needed to (on TV sports can't remember the channel). Anyway....I'm chalking it up to 1st live game of the year. We don't know if Barker would have done better or worse. UK won so let's move on. Now if week 2 is the same and UK loses then I think you consider at least giving Barker a shot. But as long as UK is winning you don't make a change. There was another QB recently who did nothing but win but had terrible accuracy...named Tebow. We don't know what kind of team leader Towles is vs Barker. It very well could be that the team trusts Towles more than Barker and the Coaches feel that gives them the best chance to WIN.

Never have seen Drew play. Has anyone watched him? How does his game and arm differ from Patrick? Can he throw the ball with accuracy and touch? Mobile?

Ok. I am not yet throwing in the towel on Towles but I at least am looking around. Living up here in northeast Ohio, I don't get to see much on the Cats. So please feel me in on Barker. Should we see another lethargic game out of Towles, would we be any better with Barker? How did he look in practice this preseason?
Do you believe in practice competition? Do you think Stoops and Dawson know what they are doing? Barker got beat out in practice fair and square. Do you think 1 shaky half of football changes what happened over 60 days of practice in April and August? It amazes me how many people just don't get this. Towles absorbed more sacks and hits than any other SEC quarterback in 2014, but still ranked 5th in the SEC in passing yards/game. No wonder he is starting again in 2015. What a surprise! Stoops has been more than fair. He split 1st team reps between Towles and Barker for the 1st half of August, despite the fact that Towles would have benefitted from getting all those reps. So Towles didn't quite have his timing down perfectly in week #1. Does that really surprise anyone? I would give Towles the entire month of September before I would even think twice about it. Do people actually think a redshirt freshman with no game experience, who was beat out in practice, is going to be an improvement over Towles? Come on. Get real.

The "competition" was not as close as you were lead to believe. Towles was notified he would be the starter almost two weeks before it was released to the public and it was literally never in doubt.
I don't know exactly when Towles was notified, but I believe you are basically right. Barker is on track to start in 2017-18. The lack of a quarterback signing in our 2015 class means our coaches are heavily depending on Barker. The so called competition was held to keep Barker focused, and to keep our early opponents from being sure about the quarterback until late in August. But it also meant Towles didn't get as many reps with the 1st team as he might have, and this is a partial explanation for his inconsistency in the opener. When you are trying to master your timing with 10 different receivers, you need all the August reps you can get. Towles and Barker are both talented quarterbacks, both still working to master their craft. Except Towles is 2 years farther down that path. People who want Barker starting ought to think this through. Everyone in the media and the fan base are convinced Kentucky must go to a bowl this year. Does anyone seriously think Stoops would pick a brand new starting quarterback in a season when he is being held to this bowl expectation? All the criticisms that people are aiming at Towles would multiply immediately if Stoops bailed out and named Barker. In terms of development, Barker would be where Towles was a year ago. All the other elements would be the same, including inconsistent pass blocking. All you guys better get used to the fact that we will go as far as Towles and our offensive line take us. Towles is the starter, and that won't change.

three td tosses is hardly lethargic...

Towles led the O to 40 points...he did not give up 33...

i've said it before...this team has the offense to win 8 games...whether or not the same can be said for the defense remains to be seen...

The defense is not remotely strong but going three and out so much in the second half might be some excuse for fatigue. Plus some of them are running forty or fifty yards on every punt. About time we attempt to move the chains and put the pressure on the opponent's defense.

Throwing incomplete passes is not the way to do that.

Your last two statements are probably right . And is why a lot of people will be looking for basketball season . When you say Towles is 2 years farther down the path , IMO that is even more reason to see what Barker can do . I don't base this off of one game . If Towles had shown any improvement as the season progressed last year , I would feel TOTALLY different . Imo his worst game was the biggest game , the big rivalry game , the game that would have put us in a bowl , the UL game , THE LAST GAME . After the game Stoops said they had to abandon the gameplan because the quarterback could not implement it . HOW CAN YOU TRUST A QUARTERBACK LIKE THAT ? There is not a doubt in my mind that Towles looks better in practice . He should , this is his fourth year in the system . I REALLY hope I'm wrong , but at this point , I'm expecting to be disappointed by a quarterback that has completed less than 50% of his passes in 6 of his last 7 games .

Sure its a valid question, how would Barker do, but It seems like we've had a quasi QB Controversy since Rich Brooks left. Can we just give Towles more than one game to prove himself before we start another on the forums.

You must not read much, it was just in the game thread Saturday lol.

I read plenty. I thought you said "a few people on this board"? Who? I didn't realize that someone like yourself was naive/gullible enough to take ONE POSTER saying they "thought" Barker was suspended as the truth. Are you that easy? Hey listen, I thought I heard that Towles ate too many chicken dumplings before the game and that's why his passes were off. Quick, take a mental note of this and bring it up in another thread.

Like I said, EITHER WAY, you're wrong about Barker being suspended. Sorry.
