How about Barker?

Ok. I am not yet throwing in the towel on Towles but I at least am looking around. Living up here in northeast Ohio, I don't get to see much on the Cats. So please feel me in on Barker. Should we see another lethargic game out of Towles, would we be any better with Barker? How did he look in practice this preseason?

I believe he is suspended for the first couple of games this year because of his off the field antics ... not 100% on that but I think that is the case. Most of what I have read (I have no inside info or seen any practices) people say he is inconsistent in practice but is more of a big play type of guy. Take it for what it's worth.
Not true

three td tosses is hardly lethargic...

Towles led the O to 40 points...he did not give up 33...

i've said it before...this team has the offense to win 8 games...whether or not the same can be said for the defense remains to be seen...

I wouldn't say Towles "lead" this team to 40 points. He also missed on about 21 points or more.

Well he was not made the starter so he must not have played as well as Towles.

Is it possible to become SLOWER than Towles was last year? Because tonight the was "running" pretty ---ing slow...

First, that comment was about the rumor that the poster heard about Drew being suspended and he's not. I personally thought the few run plays for Towles were terrible calls but I guess he could be slower but on those plays it was hard to tell.

Hasn't this been done before...everyone always thinks the unknown is always better. "Put Moss in! He threw 3 touchdowns against a special Olympics team"

He got beat in a close QB competition.

The "competition" was not as close as you were lead to believe. Towles was notified he would be the starter almost two weeks before it was released to the public and it was literally never in doubt.

Yes we scored 40 with PT but his numbers weren't that good. Accuracy was not that good. I think that performance will lead to problems in the SEC. Starting next week. Let's hope it was first game jitters. On to South Carolina.

If had Towles had any touch on his passes or at least had some consistency, he would've gone for 400 yards last night. He can make a great pass, then make the worst read you can imagine.
I'd have to say the staff sees Barker and Towles everyday and none of us have ever seen Barker take a snap in college - we'll see.

Bring back Moss!! He's better than Newton!! Newton is way better than Hartline.......................................

We haven't had a decent QB since Woodson left. We always have fans trying to convince themselves that the crap QB is better than what he really is. We saw this constantly with Hartline.

I'd seriously consider giving Barker the nod or finding a two QB system, which is not ideal. I just do not think highly of PT especially after the end of last season.

Patrick had WRs that we're getting the job done and putting themselves in position to make big plays. ULL could not stop them (had to grab on that last drive just to make sure they did not get burned). Baker, Timmons, Johnson and Bone did their jobs. PT needed to do his more consistently. He failed to get them the ball enough and it was not always because he was pressured. That is a problem he has had in his last two games (ULL and UL). He missed on more points. No doubt.

I remember that logic. We had to start Newton. Without a doubt. Why? Because he looked good in practice? Nah. Just because there was NO WAY Morgan Newton was worse than Michael Hartline.

I agree , however I don't think Towles has improved AT ALL since the Florida game . I think his worst performance was the Louisville game , the most important game of last year . It would have broken a 5 game losing streak , given us a winning season , and a bowl game . He shit the bed though . Tons of time throughout history a quarterback has won the job in practice but when the backup gets a chance ,it's apparent he is the best at running the team . Tom Brady and Tony Romo are examples . Barker may not be any better , but IMO we are in trouble if he isn't .

Some of the throws were either behind the receiver or overthrown. It looked to me like he had difficulty reading some of the defensive schemes and overreacted instead of calculated the best move.

It also looked like the UK offense made no adjustment when the second string QB entered the game. It was almost like they went conservative and decided to just hold on for the win. Jmo

How would you describe his play then?

He threw 3 TD'S and lead the last drive to score.

I think he's the second in the SEC for passing yards right now.

If someone gave you a million dollars in quarters you seem like the kind of fella who would complain about having to roll them first before taking them to the bank.

This is a long season. This is about one thing and one thing only and that is winning.

What an idiotic statement.

You're saying that because Towles has good receivers who were able to make big plays DESPITE having to make big adjustments on the ball, Towles had a good game. Towles made some nice plays, but he made way too many mistakes to conclude he had a good game.

SDS ranked the top 10 SEC quarterbacks after week one and guess what? Towles didn't make the list. Why do you think that's the case? They must be biased against Kentucky, right?

http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/10-best-sec-quarterbacks-2015-week-1/

Per ESPN, Towles rated 9th best in the SEC after week one. He was 12th in completion percentage and 9th in both yards per completion and longest completion. He was 2nd in total yards, total attempts and 3rd in total completions. He tied for 2nd in touchdowns and tied for 1st in sacks.

Towles did some good things in the game, but the mistakes he made will keep this team from reaching a bowl game in 2015 if he doesn't improve his accuracy. An SEC team would have picked a few of those bad throws off and the defense right now isn't good enough to keep the interceptions from leading to 7 points.

I hope Towles gets his act together. I know he's capable of playing much better than he did on Saturday. Of all of the problems on display Saturday, Towles' inaccuracy was the one that worry me most. Nearly all of the other mistakes can be corrected with more experience and coaching. This team will improve a lot. But if the QB can't hit a receiver in stride at least some of the time, the Air Raid doesn't work. UK will then have to rely more heavily on the run game and opposing defenses will put 8 men in the box and dare Towles to throw it. We know how that turned out last year.

Being a realist is vastly different than being a pessimist or trying to find things to complain about. Looking at the game through rose-colored glasses is fine if doing so makes you happy, but it doesn't win SEC football games.

Carolina really recruited Barker hard and we were disappointed when he committed to UK. Now it appears we may have wasted a scollie on him had he chosen us. Speaking quarter backs, we may be forced to play the position by village this week because of injury and lack of production.

For this to happen we need the oline to run block much better. Pass blocking was good IMO.

Also we must execute much better, we will not be facing too many press coverages with Sun Belt talent like the first half. Our underneath game needs to improve.

I am anxious to see us do that this week.

I really do not have much faith this week in our defense assuming we are still without Flannigan and Hatcher.

My fear is the read-option will eat us up and eventually the young db's will get caught up or have to go to straight man due to providing so much run support that they hit a couple on us.

I am fully prepared to be wrong on this!!!

Barker was well on his way to seeing a few series in the 4th quarter until our little near catastrophic second half meltdown.

The real issue is that Barker must get reps. Any team is one play away from losing their most important position. Last night VT gave os all they wanted until QB went down!

Your comment about 'improving his accuracy' hit home with me. I believe it was his coach that said QB's don't improve accuracy after playing the position as long as Patrick has. I hope Patrick has a great season but if he can't hit open receivers at this point I question that he can all of a sudden get it done.

3 step drop and toss the fly pattern is not a high accuracy pass. Most of the inaccuracies could be more timing related... maybe?

We will see on Saturday, I hope he can improve because the offense must help the D out much more this game than the last.

Yep, he looks the same as last season. I wonder if Barker would be any better. Maybe not, but I'd like to see.

You, Sir, brought it. Awesome points and references you bring up to back up your claim.

Wasted a scollie?? Based on what? Hasn't thrown a pass yet in 1 game he was active in.

That could be the worst QB evaluation I've ever seen. Florida had 2 of the best 10 QBS in the SEC last week? Matty Mauk with a 54% completion ratio against a 1-AA team? Greyson Lambert 141 yards and 2 TDs? That list is a joke. By the way, most of the QBs on that list played inferior competition.
