I won't nitpick with words, but ...
I think the term "great" is overused. I am guilty of it myself. For me, following college basketball for 50 years now, I think the Mount Rushmore of College Basketball coaches is
Rupp
Phog Allen
Coach K
Wooden
not that there aren't other coaches that can be considered GREAT, but I think any short list has those at or near the very top.
Sampson has paid his dues. Is he a great coach? No, but he is very very good Amongst the best active coaches now. I agree that I would put him in the Tarkanian category, with better x's and o's. And as I think about it, I'd put him behind only Pitino as the best coach, right now, out there.
Houston has had several years of really bad injury "luck" (or curse, as we know all about) if you go back and look at the past 3 or 4 years, if it wasn't for some of those injuries, this might be a different discussion as far as greatness and titles.
But titles are not the sole measure of greatness. Sampson has consistently been among the best coaches. I hope he can come thru for Houston finally and get the title, unless Florida goes cold, or that Amazing Houston defense can make life hard enough, I'm afraid they ain't gonna have enough firepower to beat the Gators.
Gonna be a good one.
