Hitchhiking dead

I’ve hitch hiked multiple times and as recently as two years ago. One weirdo in thirty years and he seemed pretty harmless. People live with too much fear.

Man, when I first read the thread title I thought they were coming out with a new walking dead spinoff series. Imagine how disappointed I was until the above post.

Never hitchhiked, but the day I came back home from Viet Nam, I didn't tell anyone I was coming home. I got off my plane at Barkley Field In Paducah and was going to walk home. I threw my duffle bag over my shoulder and took off. Only a few hundred yards from the airport, a guy in a pick up truck stopped and offered me a ride. I told him no thanks because I don't like to ask for help. He said he felt obliged to help someone who had served their country, so I threw my duffle bag in the back of his truck and got in. He drove me about 10 miles and I said I'll get off here at a side road and walk the rest of the way. He insisted and drove me a couple more miles to my folks house.

Back many moons ago, I wasn't afraid to pick up hitchhikers, but I grew up in Johnson County, pretty calm place back then. Now, I wouldn't think about picking up anyone, way to many crazy people these days. Good friend of mine hitchhiked out west back in the 70's, brought me a can of Coors beer, said it wasn't allowed to be sold back east.
