High Praise for Julius Randle

Kentucky is my team, but if you can't see or respect the opposition than you are a $#@& @$$. I know good talent when I see it. Just because he didn't play at UK doesn't mean he was garbage.

Hmm.....well I'm confused.

um.........if who didn't play at UK?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned--Julius Randle is a class act---his maturity off the court was almost shocking for someone so young, especially when he first came to UK.

And the way he's handled himself as an NBA player--especially after his injury. One of my all-time favorites.

I think reddick needs to sit the next few plays out.....

Or maybe pick a new user. You used your Duke one for this thread.

Is that, JJreddickulis.....

I've consistently said - as good as Julius was - he wasn't in the "superstar" level of Cal-at-UK players, which to me includes Wall, Davis and Cousins, inarguably, and then maybe MKG and KAT depending on definitions and parameters. I've also consistently said I hope I'm proved wrong about him in particular. And maybe I'm on course.....

He was just as good as MKG if not better.

AD, Wall, Cousins, Towns, MKG, Randle.

I'll give you top 6. Top 4 takes some argument. Definitely have to split some hairs. We are blessed.
I love MKG (im not calling you out personally Aike...)

BUT... i cant seem to get the overwhelming love/hype the guy gets... He was a great player for us, but he only averaged 12/7. I know offense is just half of the game and he had some stellar Defense but come on. Better then Brandon Knight? Heck, Terrence Jones had better stats the MKG both years. I just dont get it. maybe because he was the leave it all out on the floor type guy.

I'm not calling you out either, but MKG is a rare "baller" imo. All those other guys are great too, but if I'm picking sides in a pick-up game, I want MKG on my side every time. In that scenario, I would probably pick him third after AD and Wall.

Over Cousins too?

I loved MKG prob my 2nd favorite behind Knight and he was a crucial part of our run. I would have him 7 behind your list + knight. Still pretty high praise considering the guys Cal has brought in

Pick up game? Yeah, if I pick 3rd I already got AD 1st.

What separated MKG from virtually any UK player that I can recall are intangibles. The quintessential glue guy. Ordinarily that guy is someone of modest talent, who contributes in the only real way he can - through those intangibles. MKG was that guy, who also happened to be talented enough to be ranked as the best high school player in the country as a junior, who went on to become the 2 overall pick in the NBA draft. As I said, he has some limitations - which really comes down to the absense of a jumpshot, which is a pretty big deal if you're 6'7 - and that factor makes this kind of conversation tricky.

We don't win that title without him, of that I'm convinced. So he was crucial in winning a title and was the overall 2 pick. How many people can make that claim?

If you try to assess him based on numbers, the analysis is lacking.....

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. Some people think he's an NBA bust. Charlotte fans think he's their best player.

I guess it's a good thing I watch the games then :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:.

One number that shouldn't surprise...he was the second best rebounder in the NBA last year from the SF spot. Draymond was first.

Exactly. I know how valuable he was simply because of all of the hustle and "glue" that was factored into his game. It is just hard to quantify how much that means to the game. I will agree to you we dont win it all without MKG but I would also say to you that if you flip flop MKG for Knight 2011 doesn't go to the Final Four and 2012 still stands a really good chance of winning it with a Teague, Knight, Lamb lineup.

I guess it is all about how you view it.

I've always thought Julius would be the best player from that draft class. Time will tell but the kid made my jaw drop more than anyone Cal has brought to UK. He was a animal.

Damn guys, you all are beating me up here. Its like ridiculous but putting in ullis. Nothing to do with duke. And the Camby thing because he was first.

I absolutely love that my Lakers grabbed Randle last year. The last two preseason games he has put up pretty good numbers in limited of minutes. The general consensus in Laker land is if Randle can knock down that mid range shot he becomes unguardable.

Think people got confused when you said "we" had to double team him both times we played him.

Thought you were talking about Randle, which would imply that you were a fan of a different team.

Apparently you were talking about Camby.

Oh ok. Well, his name threw me as well. Reddickulis? Sounded like JJreddick to me. But if I'm mistaken my bad.

Yeah I don't know either. I was confused but looking back I see what he might have meant. There are so many real trolls around here that I try to give people the benefit of the doubt as long as possible.

BTW.. I might take MKG #1 if not for Anthony Davis being made in a lab and being transcendent. He's easily #2 for me. He can guard the 1-4, blow by almost anyone, rebound, pass, do whatever it takes.

Honestly, I don't get how he's not any UK fan's top3 Cal player. He'd throw his body on the floor before anyone else.

I can tell you why.

People don't value defensive juggernauts to the extent that they value a volume scorer. It's that easily explained.

When MKG was a freshman in high school he was projected to grow to 6'10 or more. Just imagine that.

Obviously I love MKG and I can almost agree with you. But John Wall is another freak of nature too.

Forget his defense. He's the definition of a team player, that's why he's #2. The ONLY reason he's not more of a UK ambassador is because he's very shy and isn't a big spot light guy. He was a UK guy years before he played for the wildcats.

And Wall is my other top choice. I won't lie that it's tough.. But I think MKGs persona edges out Wall, for me personally. At least in terms of playground pickup.

Passing the ball was never his strong point.... If the NBA thinks that Randle has just now discovered a fast first step, then he wasn't watching him play at UK... Randle always had a quick first step, but when the D closed in, he could stop and he wouldn't pass.... Still, this guy is going to be a great pro.. If he ever learns the plays and gets used to sharing the ball, then the sky is the limit... I sure wish him the best....

Definitely the future of the Lakers. Awesome that yet another UK player is the face of an NBA franchise..

Washington, New Orleans, Sacramento, Phoenix (Knight and Bledsoe), Los Angeles, Charlotte, Minnesota.

That's like 23% of NBA teams.. And none are on the Knicks!

*high-five*

It's Riddick you dumbass. If you're going to troll someone.. Get the name right. And by the way JJ is a scrub.

And he's still recovering from being banged around and assaulted here at UK. I've never, in 29 years, seen a player be fouled was much. The SEC officials allowed him to be absolutely butchered simply because he was clearly dominant. All you had to do was triple team him and they'd allow anything.

Had he played for Duke, he would have lived at the foul line.

The only guy I can think of who was fouled as much as Randle was Shaq. He got hacked to death in college too. No one else even comes to mind as being in the same ballpark though.

It was an NBA vet saying it. Not some random internet poster. Randle's skill set for his body type is fairly unique.
It's not like it's unusual for players to be terrible judges of talent. Kobe himself said he would take Evan Turner over John Wall back in the 2010 draft.

A more athletic David West would probably be his realistic ceiling. That's if he continues to develop his face-up game.

David West is a 2 time All Star. So a more athletic version of him would be a pretty good player, right?

If he reaches it, sure. He's not there yet, and he may never get there. He's got to develop his off hand and get that jumper locked up.
