Kam Williams is NOT coming off the bench. He just isn't. He will be the starter day 1, and will be / is very good. The kid is a complete 2 way player. He started and played 32 minutes per game as a freshman, he is not a back up.
So say we take 3 more, which 3-4 players start the season getting no minutes? Perry is obvious but after that we gonna have 12 guys way too good to only get 5 minutes a game.Kam Williams is NOT coming off the bench. He just isn't. Good take, brother. I certainly hope there's still a chance for Pierre, too.Not that anyone probably cares but here is my guess.
I think we already have Mackenzie Mgbako committed with an expectation that he will come off the bench at the 4 spot.
I think the staff is holding off on the announcement to not scare away Alvaro.
I think their dream scenario at the 4 right now is Alvaro/Mgbako.
I think we go after one more perimeter guy (a guy like Pierre if we want another playmaker/shot creator, or a 3&D guy, maybe Diabate but he's not a prolific shooter by any means.) Let's call this player "Portal A". Btw I hope it's Pierre. Hope we don't back away from him now that we have Lowe.
And then I think we still hunt for a rim protector. Let's call this player "Portal B"
So I think we are looking at (starters in bold):
PG: Lowe/Lewis/Perry
SG: Oweh/Jasper/Chandler
SF: (Portal A)/Kam Williams/Chandler/Noah
PF: Alvaro/Mgbako/Kam Williams (stretch 4 if needed)
C: Moreno/Garrison/(Portal B)
Yes I think Moreno starts, maybe not day 1 but I like his upside more than Garrison right now.
That would be 13 of our 15 scholarships used, and maybe we take a flyer on one more development piece just for the fun of it, hang onto one in case a recluse comes up this summer.
If we get Folgueiras and Yates, I will be ecstatic about this portal class.
Not only did we get some really good players, all of them should be multi year players.
I still think we need a backup for Folgueiras at the 4.
Big agreement on Chandler. He has the physical ability and a pretty solid skillset, and the mental difference between a 23 year old and a 19 year old will show up now that he has gotten a chance to re-acclimate to playing. Having a hard time seeing him not being either a quality starter or our best player off the bench.I think Chandler has one of the larger jumps from Freshman to Sophomore in college basketball, being a 22 or 23 year old Sophomore. He was coming on good, he has all summer to work on his ball handling, his defense and rebounding. He is a guy that can jump out of the gym and we have not seen that yet. He will get stronger and with leg strength, faster. Noah will make a good leap as well. I think Pope works on these 2 guys a ton this summer and fall. I expect Noah to look thinner around the middle and way broader shoulders. He will pic up speed and agility. He has the offense, he can rebound, he just has to improve his defense. If we get 1 more scoring wing piece (6'5" to 6'7') guy like Pierre then great for us. I see all 3 freshman from this past year living up the challenge of making themselves better.
Not so sure Pope isn’t going to go with Williams and Noah as his small ball stretch 4’s.We definitely do need a backup to Alvaro at the 4.
Not so sure Pope isn’t going to go with Williams and Noah as his small ball stretch 4’s.
He wants Noah to add 10-15 pounds of muscle.
Williams is a long 6’8 athlete that can knock down 3’s.
If Almonor can handle that role and all he could really do well is shoot open jumpers, then Williams and Noah should be able to handle it for 12-15 minutes a game.
Neither of those guard can make 3s consistent enough. It’s going to be difficult to play Lowe and Oweh at the same time. Not that anyone probably cares but here is my guess.

All these starters on the team. We ll be playing 10 on 5. lol.Kam Williams is NOT coming off the bench. He just isn't. He will be the starter day 1, and will be / is very good. The kid is a complete 2 way player. He started and played 32 minutes per game as a freshman, he is not a back up.
That is a concern. My ONLY problem with that is it's leave us really vulnerable to injuries. If Alvaro goes down for even a 4-5 game stretch in SEC play, it could tank our chances at a good seed in March or a league title. Not sure Noah or Williams can hold down the 4 spot for any long stretch of games.
That is a concern.
But it’s about like having to rely on Almonor at the 4 when Carr hurt his back.
And it isn’t as bad as having to start a Freshman Perry at PG. And we had two PGs and a ballhandling Wing(Robinson) in front of him.
My point is, it’s really hard to find enough depth to overcome injuries. We saw that this season.
No matter how many we sign, if a star goes down, it really hurts.
Good point. But one thing, Moreno is definitely a rim protector. Now I understand, and agree with, not relying on him too heavily yet, but he'll end up as good, feared shot-blocker at UK.It's been clear that Pope & Co have really prioritized getting a long rim protector this cycle. TBB & Gwath were legit misses, not saying that in a bad way, but moreso that it's clear they REALLY wanted a guy like that.
Don't think they walk away from that idea just yet.
Alvaro can be physical, and Moreno/Garrison are both big-bodied as well, but we need rim protection in the worst way!
Would much rather Pierre than Thomas for obvious reasons but wouldn't be angry about Thomas.
The options (cutting, screens, etc.) were there, but there was a disconnect between Pope/staff and the players and what would be a blessing and what was a requirement. The team simply didn't fight for long enough, or hard enough. Pope HAS to change in that regard. Being a nice guy isn't sealing the deal in the portal and it won't get you ready for the tournament.Among this projected roster, who can beat their defender and finish and/or make a play in the mid range/at the rim? A significant flaw in last year's team was a lack of consistent offensive options when teams pressed out and took away 3 point shot opportunities. Oweh was perhaps the most reliable option we had. Butler could beat his man, but struggled to finish.
Will Lowe, Lewis, and/or Johnson reliably offer this to the offense?

Rather have his teammate rileyMalik Thomas from San Francisco
Agreed, we need a better starter at this position or it will be a struggle. The real problem to me is Garrison/Moreno at the 5. The sec will eat them alive.
One thing about Diabate is he would just rise out of nowhere against us and thunder dunk. Just not sure about his motor. Not that anyone probably cares but here is my guess.

Isn’t that what we were upset with the previous coach for doing?Pope needs to develop Johnson and put him in the NBA ASAP!
