Herbstreit: "Right now if you look at his roster, he's got a veteran quarterback (Patrick Towles) coming back, and in that conference that's invaluable," Herbstreit said. "He (Stoops) has got skill now, better defense and better depth. I think a bowl game is realistic for them, but in that conference with who you play and also having to play Louisville, I think you just need to start with some wins. You need to start fast no matter who you're playing."

He also commented on UofL, calling them a "sleeper" in the ACC:

"I think they're a sleeper in the ACC this year because they lost so many players to the NFL that people are forgetting about them and only know about Clemson and Florida State," Herbstreit said. "To me, in August, that's where I want my team to be. I like people forgetting about us, it motivates the team."

Didn't think the ACC was sleeping on UL? Are they not picked to finish tied for 3rd?
Anybody know what their schedule is going to be like?

Also I think that many in the media is starting to warm up against the cats. If we make a bowl and show a good game in any of our losses what are thinking of next year? 8 wins?

"Sleeping on them" is probably a relative term..I mean Louisville is being mentioned a little bit, but probably not as much as they feel like they should be (and many nationally still only think of Clemson and FSU when they think ACC, so UofL is somewhat of an afterthought to someone who doesn't follow the sport closely)

Yeah, I think more and more are warming up..Herbie has always been pretty warm on us actually..when we started out hot last year I remember him picking us to win down at LSU..he's always been a big Stoops' supporter and he tweeted last week that he hopes we make a bowl this year and wasn't surprised by Stoops' good recruiting..as for next year I think 8 is entirely possible if not likely considering what we'll have returning

Been pretty much saying the same as Herbie

If being maybe the third or fourth best team in the conference means being a sleeper, they may be. They won't win the acc, but they will have a winning record. Then again, I have no question that we wouldn't be the third or fourth best team in the acc. ul will have a good team. CS (and the guy from miami ? ) left bp some weapons.

UL is going to struggle this year. Their O-Line is awful. I can't wait to See Bobby P.'s face turn red when his QB is constantly harassed.

The Vile (yes i spelled that right) went from the 6th best power FB conference to the 5th best. How can you not win that that joke of a conference?

i agree with herb but i still think the sec overall is a little down this year and most of it because of poor qb play. IF towles and the wr's gel this year and put up decent #s then i think we get to 6 and if the D moves to top 35ish then we get to 7.

i dont understand them clemson love either. they dont look to be better but are rated better. fsu only lost 1 game last year but they had 3 or 4 really close calls and without winston and possibly cook i think they drop 3 and maybe 4 games as well. could be a race to mediocrity for the acc title this year like the year wake won it.

a lot will clear up over the next few weeks though for both teams and conferences.

Truthfully...the only thing Herbie got mixed up is people are sleeping on Kentucky...

I just find it ironic that the media made them the favorites in the ACC Atlantic and they have NOBODY returning and their QB is recoverying from ACL surgury along with having to new OC

I agree with this, and I think UL can (not will, but can) win that game. But, I think the reasoning is that Clemson is now recruiting at an elite level and their QB seems to be a future star. I think the loss of their OC will hurt them though. Pretty much a pickem game in week 3.

I can't put Clemson over Florida State in the Atlantic or Georgia Tech in the overall scheme of the ACC

Don't sleep on the Cats! Badet says he is finally 100% this offense is gonna be rocking if true, just one more weapon! May be the first time in years that UK has a better record than UL after 5 games.

Clemson has recruited at an elite level (God knows why) for the past 30 years, and they always lose multiple games that they shouldn't. Plus, Spurrier has the title to their so-called "death valley" (i.e., he owns them). I have never understood the media love fest with Clemson, nor have I ever understood how Clemson recruits inner-city A-A kids to a place that makes Starkville look like NY City. That said, UofL will beat Clemson, and probably rather handily.

BTW, per Twitter, Clemson just got its first Wendys. I expect them to get a couple of 5-star commitments based solely on that...

Clemson has a beautiful campus, amazing facilities, a dedicated fanbase, solid tradition, and the town is small but very cool. Put it with a charismatic coach and it's easy to see how they recruit well.. Clemson also kicked USCs butt last year, so I'm not sure how much Spurrier can say he owns them right now.

I'm hate to say it but I think UL has a legit chance to beat Clemson at home if they get ANY semblance of Oline play. I don't get the Clemson love. I know they've recruited great but they lost almost all of the starters on there lines and the love you hear for them is mainly tied to a true soph qb that missed a bunch of last year

hope I'm wrong and they wax that as : )

Clemson is the Gonzaga of college football. ACC in general is overrated. I agree that UK would be right about where UL is projected in the ACC.

I am as big an SEC homer as anyone, but the ACC has some good teams at the top, they aren't deep as some others but not many conferences would have gone 3-0 against their top 3 teams last year. The ACC has won a national championship since the SEC and beat a SEC team while doing it. They also went 4-0 against us on rivalry Saturday in 14, lucky for me there are so few Tech fans in Georgia I don't hear much about it. But right now we don't have much to brag about, SEC was down last year and could be again this year. Too many teams with big question marks, UK and Arkansas probably have the least heading into the season.
