Hi everyone, I'm fresh off a nice weekend of traveling and getting a win no one expected from us! I caught the end of my first post and I had so much fun between workouts last week, I'll post what I have been past along.
*Disclaimer, I don't read many message boards so I'm not sure what is current or old news.
Once again, I'm a big personal fan of Cal and several players from this year and the past. I'm not a born UK fan, but I cheer for them over any other D-1 school.
1. Cal is looking at defending ball screens differently with Skal. If you haven't noticed Skal isn't as fleet of foot as other bigs he's previously have had. Right now they are "walling" and in the past they've also just switched when they had WCS. I think he may have to start trapping screens on certain matchups to prevent what the big white kid did Thursday. FYI that kid had a great game, but he's not more than an average stretch four.
2. Ulis is still getting better. Slightly concerned because as of this weekend, I have been told he doesn't have full range of motion. He's a very tough kid and UK needs him, but this may linger.
3. Skal isn't going be allowed to start taking all jump shots at this point. Cal and staff are devoted to making Skal a back to the basket presence. Even if it means the team struggles. Overall, he's going to need to showcase that be a high lotto pick.
4. Not UK related, but Ben Simmons is a complete freak. Too bad his coach can't coach a lick. UK never had a chance for him. It was LSU or nothing. It stays in the family.
5. This may ruffle some feathers, but UL is going to give UK some trouble this year. I don't hate the UL program, but I'm not a Pitino fan for obvious personal reasons. I watched some film on them, their bigs are just average and physical enough to give UK's trouble. Meaning if UK shoots poorly, those red birds have a shot. The last couple years, they had no shot due to a pure size advantage. Their guards are above average and older so they have some grown man strength that UK doesn't. Well, besides Briscoe.
6. Now this is a little more hearsay but it's been said that Cal already knows what point guard he wants for 17' and it may be from the land of De'Aaron Fox and Andrew Harrison. Other coaches have taken notice.
Everything UK has a problem with is potentially fixable, so don't stress out more than the coaching staff.
Take it all with a grain of salt.
Happy Monday and keep grinding!
