Has everyone forgotten about Shai Alexander??

I believe everyone has forgotten about Mr. Alexander, unfortunately.

I have watched him play a few times. If he is our backup pg, we are in trouble. Very loose dribble, not very quick. Absolutely not a knockdown shooter.

I am sure he will develop over time, but not going to see the court this upcoming season

no, i did not forget him. (I am sure most people did not)

but it's dangerous for people to think that every recruit we get will be able to contribute valuably as a freshman.

Keep in mind, this class coming in is very good, but they are also not top tier talents of the likes you see in the top 5 players in the class.

There are as of now, no fox and Monk capability within the team. While some that's coming in are better than fox or monk in different ways, but overall i doubt they are as good as these two.

It's better to not expect so much from Shai Alexander. I don't know if he is the kind of player that contribute major minutes as a freshman, he has potential.

Okay

I am hoping Alexander won't have to play much this season. Hoping we have Briscoe back or add Cam Johnson or Elijah Brown to go with Green and Diallo as our main three guards.

I would love to see Briscoe at the 1, Diallo at the 2, and Johnson at the 3 with Green off the bench. I think that gives us a good combination of talent and experience in the backcourt. Johnson is a deadly shooter (42% last year on 6 attempts per game!) and has the size (6'8, 210) to play the 3. Briscoe gives us an experienced PG to lead the way. That allows Cal to bring Alexander along slowly.

Start Bamba (if he comes) at the 4 and Richards at the 5. Bring in Gabriel (if he returns), Vanderbilt, and Washington off the bench along the frontline.

Pretty good recipe for another championship run.

While he's a nice addition to the class, he's a multi-year player. If you watch his videos, he doesn't blow you away. Quality guard that might be able to contribute in small amounts next season, but not someone who's going to come in and be the lead guard for big stretches right away.

Will be playing in upcoming Hoop Summit game...interested to see him against High level players

Off topic a bit but can anyone see Humphries(if he stays) and Bamba(if he comes) playing at the same time?

A lot of size there and it frees up each to play to their strength and maybe cover the flaws they both have

My take is that playing Bamba at any position other than Center at this point is a disservice to him and his college team - especially if that team has much more offensively versatile PF options such as Washington and Gabriel. Put Bamba at Center, where he fits and looks best. Again, just my opinion based on what I have seen.

You are probably right,I was thinking of playing them with Bamba at the 5 on offense and the 4 on defense. If Bamba comes we will have so many front court players there may not be a place for Humphries, with that being said based on what we have seen so far I would want him to return before Gabriel and SKJ.I know that would be unpopular on the board but with Washington,Vanderbilt and Richards already on board there is limited room/time to develop all of them.Humphries to a degree already has the skills he has and is probably the most ready to build on them.

We need Bamba's skills but we have a glut of people in the front court,he will command major minutes next season and limit time to develop other players in a single year.

I bet you won't see a 3 guard lineup next year...PJ Washington will be a starter. Only way i want Briscoe back is as the PG
Briscoe
Diallo
Washington
WG
Bamba

(1) Assuming Briscoe leaves you can't have a roster with only 3 guards. Anybody gets hurt for any period of time and you're utterly screwed and every team we play will press us relentlessly.
(2) We just saw what happend to SKJ this year and he was MUCH more highly regarded coming out of high school. So there is a high chance Alexander also can't contribute much as a freshman.

I have thought since he was signed he didn't look like a kid Calipari recruits, I am confident Cal has seen something we haven't.

Yeah, I agree. A lot of frontcourt talent that would all likely play at many other Div. I schools. I even like the strength and potential of Wynyard as a valuable backup who might get a lot of minutes at plenty of schools. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

I honestly think, just reading the tea leaves, that Cal is wanting to put together a team with a handful of 3-4 year guys and mix the one and dones in. He got SGA. He's picked up Humphries and Tai. He's reaching out to several other guards that aren't as highly regarded.

Alexander was recruited by and committed to Mike White at FL, not an idiot. This says to me that he can play. We need 4 guards of which Alexander would be one along with Diallo and Green. Cal is going to get another two guard Any of the three kids mentioned on this board + the grad student from Pittsburg are fine. If necessary, Vanderbilt could play 2 in a pinch .

I'm not sure what you think I'm saying.

I don't think Cal is suddenly looking for BAD players. I think he's getting a few more guys that may take a year or 2 to make a major impact. Mike White recruits several guys that will take a few years to be good college players. As does K, as does Roy, as does Rick.

I think that Alexander will be a good player. I just think it may take a year or 2, and that's ok. I think it will help to have a few more of those guys every year.

I was about to post similar thoughts,it seems almost a given that Cal will sign one or two more guards. He seems to be casting a pretty wide net,I wonder if it will be on a first come, first served basis or if he has a particular individual in mind as a primary target.

We aren't in the scramble mode to the degree that we were 2 years ago(Murray class) but because of the make-up of the class already on board the who else comes question gets really interesting.

I finally learned to not get too caught up in who goes and who stays and just cheer for who is here when they throw the ball up but just when I think I've mastered that Cal goes and changes the game.He starts going after people we haven't heard of all year till now,it is great being a UK fan,you just never know what will happen next:D

Yeah, he is not exactly the type guard we are used to. I am already worried about guard play. he is NOT an immediate impact guard. Sorry, he's just not.

no one has forgotten him. But to build championship and final 4 level teams you build 3 deep minimum, hell 4 deep at forward. Remember the undefeated UK team a few years back? Andrew Harrison, Aaron Harrison, Devin Booker, Tyler Ulis, Dominique Hawkins, all guards. We dont recruit players who are scared of competition, we get guys who want to come here and compete against All Americans. And Shai wasnt scared at all. Kid signed on and said Im coming, bring whoever you want. I like him.

I agree with you based on the limited tape I have seen but then I though Booker was a two year player so what the hell do I know.

Every year has surprises, that's for sure.

SGA is the type of kid I wish we got a few more of. Rivals has him at #32 overall. He screams multi-year player based on the tape. And a lot of time, we don't look at these kids early on and then they don't come here or aren't available later. A lot of them are afraid they'll get recruited over.

That said, if you want to play in the NBA, it makes all the sense in the world to come to UK and battle with the best in the country.

Has everyone forgotten that we have so many quality big guys for next year, we don't need guards?

C: Humphries
PF: Woodchopper
SF: Richards
SG: SKJ
PG: Bamba

Add Bam to the starting lineup if he comes back, and slide Bamba to the two and we'll hold teams to 2 rebounds her game.

I think Bam takes over the 2 in that line up and shoots 19% from the 3 line,on the rare occasions that we got the ball over half court we would be tough to defend:D

I want the Brown kid more than anyone. He averaged almost 19 ppg last year, he's a great shot creator and a good shooter. His percentage took a minor drop last year but as a sophomore, he shot 40% from three. So, he's capable of scoring in a variety of ways. Something that could be a great help next year and can take some pressure off the freshman to be look upon to score so much. I think it's a no brained myself. Giving everything that Brown can bring with him with his game and experience and Im thinking I'd rather have him than adding Knox. Take him, Bamba, and the Smith kid and call it a wrap.

Shai is going to shock some folks.

What's our threshold for shocking? If he plays some spots minutes this year, are we shocked?

If he plays 5-10 mins a game are we shocked?

If he's an impact player next year, are we shocked?

Define what he's going to do for me, please.

I could never forget Shai.

Here is a short video clip of Alexander from January showing some highlights from various games. I'll let you all judge what you might see as his strengths and weaknesses. The author of the video seems to think pretty highly of Alexander if you read the text on the same page as the video.

So what are the rules and feelings around here on threats against fictional characters??? Because as everyone is aware by now... UMM is a parody account... Can I threaten him with deer corpses and hot glue? or is that still a no no?
