Ball shouldn’t have been in his hands there, should have gone to Johnell.

While I agree with you, the moment DJ crossed halfcourt and they didn't call a TO is when you knew it wasn't going to end well. He had to either drive enough to get off a step back 3 or keep going. He waffled and jacked an awful shot and his coach left him out to dry.

  • There are exactly three people named Toppin I've ever heard of and they're all 6'9 ballers.
  • Davis scored 30 but he was 8 for 22 from the field. His last few drives each ended up with him being blocked. Knox scored 20 and only missed two fgs. I would have at least tried to get Davis or Knox the ball. Preferably Knox.
  • Although the comeback was bigger, I still don't view that as big of a choke as his Memphis-Kansas or UK-Wisconsin debacles. I was actually impressed Arkansas didn't have any shot clock violations during the comeback. Ha.

Cal showed just enough leg to make them think they have a chance.

Imagine if he would have come back to UK for one more run, had a similarly down to mediocre at best regular season, and then went on a mostly bogus run in the tournament leading up to another classic Cal choke job. We'd been stuck with him for at least a couple of more years at that point. We were so close!! One shot away from an Elite 8!! He can still do it!! That would have been the absolute worst case scenario: Cal being just successful enough to have enough support to keep the job but obviously still being a washed up, inflexible choke artist who is mentally checked out. We should be thanking our lucky stars were were able to escape that purgatory.

They really did get the full Calipari experience. A middling start. An injury or two that he hasn’t seen. Getting better on accident, because he was forced to play Johnell. Caught a little fire because he can always out-athlete most teams. Somehow punched a little above their weight class at the end of the year in a historically tough SEC, giving fans false hope. Come in a little bit of an underdog. Be on cruise control and have the game locked up. Blow a huge second half lead.

The only thing missing is him thumbing his nose at Ark fans. Unless I missed that

That was incredible. Catching up on highlights and recaps they blew a double digit lead with 4 mins left 😂. Up 16 with 10 mins left they did an interview with cal who was acting like “Swaggy Cal” 🤮 ISO Stall Ball ensued, T Tech makes the comeback but then a loose ball 3 gets Arkansas up 6 with a minute left. Arkansas up 3 with 15 seconds left and doesn’t foul and gives up an open 3 😂 DJ Wagner iso ball at end of regulation and OT with a TO left, even though the upperclassmen Nellie has the hot hand and 30 pts

I mean it was every single issue we’ve had the last 5 years condensed into 10 mins. Completely uncanny and incredible. I finally feel closure tbh

Shorts:- Will you sportswriters stop saying “give then their flowers”?
Preach. Sportswriters consistently try to be cool. Sportswriters will never, ever, ever be cool. It is antithetical to the profession.

That's why the Sportswriters on TV show was the best. Just old newspaper guys who may or may not be drunk giving their unfiltered opinions without trying to get ratings.

* Feels like Christmas Eve. Gonna be a long day of waiting. I have visions of sugar plums and a weeping Zakai Zeigler dancing through my head.

You gotta beat somebody. I like this matchup as much as any realistically possible. I don't care what the stats and Vegas say, if we play a Rick Barnes coached Tennessee team in the Sweet Sixteen, I like our chances. I also love my coach, my point guard, my best player, and my bigs. Oh yeah, we got the best shooter on the court tonight, too. 7:30 can't get here soon enough.

* I know some don't want to hear about the portal but I'm eat up. The tea leaves sound like Donovan Dent will be a Cat sooner rather than later and Reed Bailey of Davidson is our likeliest Carr replacement, imo. This Magoon Gwath kid out of SDSU is something else. He's a 7 foot redshirt freshman who looks like African Big Z. A center rotation of Garrison, Gwart, and Moreno would be mind-bending. There's a 6'8 wing from Tulane (Kam Williams) whose mixtape is him hitting Tayshaun Prince distance bombs constantly and his stroke is beautiful. Those mixtapes are nice way to spend a few minutes thinking about the possible future of Kentucky basketball, imo.

Sounds like we are willing to spend as much money as anyone. We ought to be thanking our lucky stars for the portal. Without it, the transition away from Calipari would have been much harder.

* And this is why you don't talk shit before things are settled, as we well learned against Arkansas this year.

Turned on ESPN this morning to see if they are even talking about the Tournament and I see Seth Greenberg and Jay Williams talking with a banner reading “Has Calipari put the SEC on notice?”. I immediately change the channel remembering why I never watch that channel anymore.

I mean, what notice did he give the SEC this season? That he’ll continue to put up mediocre regular seasons and be non-factor in the conference race? Not advance to the weekend of the SEC tournament? Do those fools think he’s going to get all those players to return for another season?

That 2 game run is going to be used to justify yet another meaningless season. For the love of God, please proceed.

Laying in bed when I saw that face I knew he was cooked. DJ seems like an all around great kid and I hope he finds someone to continue to develop his shot. Interesting Cal didnt address HOG NATION in his post game conference. No way he gets away with that here so Im going to (probably not) bookend this thing and know we both are in a better place.

There is still something about running out demons in Indy I think its meant to be. Wish I could be there tonight. The Redeemables. Give em hell.

- Finally nerves are hitting. Just the idea of what has to go right for UT actually going right is sickening.

Need some quick easy early offense for my nerves, and I don’t see how anyone could watch a game in person on edge.

- 1 thing is for certain, and 2 things are for sure……….Cal is going to Cal each and every year. Hell I bet if you actually go back and look at his time in Memphis the signs of this nonsense was there.

- I really like Ole Miss tonight and believe in Beard’s ability. I also think Purdue could pull this upset.

- Assume the additions of Dent, Williams and Alvaro won’t be officially announced until a few days after we are out or the championship.

Portals should have different dates for different sports. This one opening before the tournament is over is a conundrum of stupidity basketball wise.

- Anymore coaching moves left besides Villanova? What a quiet carousel that could have been huge. IU sucks.

- It’s early but that Reds closer got crushed.

The Hawgs season isn't over yet!

Now they get to watch their roster fall apart with guys jumping into the draft for a 2nd round prediction, and the rest of the team transferring out. Then CJVC will fill out his roster based on 2026 draft potential rather than fit and ability to win games. Later this summer one of the guys they're most excited about will have eligibility issues, and another will develop an undisclosed injury that will cause them to miss the beginning on next season.

Hope the Arkansas fans are ready for all the excitement!

- Hunch: Thiero and Fland to the league, DJ transfers to a Big East school, and weirdly enough, I think the others (Z, Knox and Richmond) come back, assuming they don't go chasing bigger bags. Each of them got plenty of minutes this year, none of them have been recruited over (yet), and each of them has a strong connection to Cal. I could see Brazile wanting to finish somewhere different, but even that's a 50/50 to me. Still don't think he'll have enough shooters next year, though.

- What a weird week for Kevin Willard...the AD leaving during the tournament, the Villanova job hovering over him, and him openly discussing the uncertainty around his status and NIL. Can't help but think that had SOME effect on Maryland, though Florida was clearly the better team anyway.

- Still think there are some more coaching dominos yet to fall, and Nova will set them into motion. I also still think that if he could, Mick Cronin would take that job. But they appear to want Willard instead.

- House money tonight, gang. Why we do this.

Last night they were already trying to convince themselves that everyone was coming back. It was like Deja Vu listening to their post game conference. It was a mixture of sadness, anger, denial and more than anything convincing themselves that they really didn’t just blow it.

-Cal most of this this year has been calmer on the sideline that ever before. But when things got tight last night, old Cal resurfaced. Yelling at the refs incessantly, yelling at DJ for taking a 3 that killed his confidence, bad body language to Johnell, the works really.

-Dent specifically could be done by the 1st and most of the portal pieces could be done by the 7th because NIL/rev share restrictions could change then.

With Arkansas you can almost guarantee that either Knox or Richmond will go pro. Neither should do it and they should come back to develop another year. We watched it happen year after year with so many Freshman who should have come back.

-Rumors today with Dent are that it's 50/50 with us and UCLA. He's from LA, they just met with him and they have more time to spend on him given they're out of the tournament before us.

-He's not doing any visits just zoom meetings and we're meeting with him soon.

-It will be interesting to see how they handle Alvaro/Bailey.; Alvaro is only a Sophomore. They could go after both but realistically it might be a first one to commit deal but getting both would be perfect.

-Gwath is a take if you can get him; he and Malachi can battle it out for backup 5 minutes this year then they could be primary 2 centers for the next couple of years after that.

It’s not lost on me that everytime Pope gets anybody it’s always EXACTLY the type of dude we had begged Cal to get for years. This current roster is full of the type of dudes who killed us during the Cal era and all signs point to that continuing for 2025/26. Was slightly worried that maybe this class might be freshman heavy but appears to be the perfect balance. Pope really is a rocket scientist

When my husband woke me up before he left this morning he said:

"Good morning, Cal blew a 16 point lead. They lost"

TALK ABOUT PEP IN YOUR STEP. Inject this into my veins.

I want to beat the hell out of Tennessee, but even if the road ends tonight, no one can steal my joy today. Beautiful day, Cats in the sweet 16, Cal schadenfreude in full effect. LFG.

I think we can condense all the bullshittery and dumb****ery we endured under Cal, most particularly in his final 5 years, to a simple, universally understandable, all-encompassing shorthand: lolCal
Poor Arkansas fans, lolCal.
