Honestly surprised that you never took it up.

If you want to learn/start; chess.com is invaluable. For a modest membership fee you get lessons, puzzles, etc. You can play bots online. The bots start at beginner level and as you advance, you can play more difficult ones. You can also play live games with other folks.

If nothing else, it's a great thing to teach your children.

If you want to learn about an intriguing chess player from the past, look up Paul Morphy on youtube. Fascinating guy, and one of the most elegant strategists the game has ever seen. He revolutionized chess, and honestly, he had zero competition; that's how advanced he was compared to players of his era. There wasn't chess theory then, as it exists today. If he lived today, and had access to "solved" databases and chess engines he'd probably be the GOAT.

The Legend: Paul Morphy
You basically just fed Anth meth. We probably won’t see the guy again until he emerges from his rabbit hole a Grand Master.

Constant off ball movement for every player and hard cuts with no breaks and no one just standing in a corner resting.

Bringing the ball up and initiating offense definitely is harder than just running up the floor and there aren't many guys his size that do it (if any) and that adds to it.

Bama's bigs average 26 and 19 mpg, Auburn's 29 and 20, Mizzou's 27 and 17.
Matt Jones said on his post game show that there is no reason that Amari shouldn't be averaging 35 MPG.

You can play bots all day for free on chess.com. It is quite hilarious trying to play the Magnus bot.

That’s actually a fair point, but Johni Broome hasn’t played less than 30 minutes the last 5 games with two of those being 36 and 34 minutes. So in the games we need it then it should be doable.

It isn’t every game.

Anyway, handle Oklahoma and LSU and if Butler is back it would be awesome to knock off Mizzou too.

The difference is Broome doesn't have point center duties, isn't involved in an offense that requires constant off ball movement every possession and Pope relies on data that says Amari has dips in energy and production once he gets past a certain minute threshold.

If BG would simply defensive rebound it wouldn't be such a problem, but caught damn we can't end defensive possessions with him on the floor. Pretty inexcusable for his size and athleticism.
Brandon was my favorite player on this team but he's killing me of late. I cannot watch him halfass defense and rebounding. He's the most Looks Like Tarzan Plays Like Jane guy we've had a in a long time. Of the possible returners, he's barely above Chandler for me at the moment.

Btw, I'm midway through the latest Sources Say podcast with Jack Pilgrim and J Kyle Mann. Doesn't sound like Mann expects Garrison or Kerr back. Said he thinks Perry is already better now than Kerr. Interesting. Not sure I agree but I also not sure he's wrong, either.

If you told me in October that Noah was the freshman I would most hope return, I would not have believed you.

* Can't even imagine having to face being a widow with a newborn. Glad your dude is ok, @pretzel__logic

* We live at the end of a dead end street, next to a field and a power substation. We aren't in the country but for suburban Lexington, it is a pretty secluded lot. Well we got mice over the weekend and my wife has freaked the f*** out. She insisted on getting the traps where you don't see them... until they ate through the trapdoor to get the peanut butter.

While I have become Shiva Destroyer of Mouse Worlds this weekend with old school traps, I am glad the pest control guy is coming to the house today. I'm going to make sure I'm gone and she's there so he can answer the 9 billion questions she will ask.

There is nothing worse than your wife playing 20 Questions with you about what some professional said. I can't even take the dog to the vet anymore because I don't provide detailed enough summaries of what the GD vet said -- which is 99% of the time, "Yup, dog looks fine. Don't feed him people food, keep him up to date on shots, etc, and walk him."

I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you if you are buying this BS.

Perhaps he needs to cease w/ the PG duties half a dozen possessions a game. W/ the timeouts, and the every 4 min. breaks, then there is zero logical reason outside of foul trouble he shouldn't be on the floor 30+ minutes. None. He's barely playing over half the game at best.

He's avg. 3.4 apg, so he's hardly going down on the block and standing around. Oh, he's taken 66 3's as well....guess he isn't simply on the block.

He's not initiating offense like a PG though; there's a big difference. Broome is getting his assists mostly off of post double teams.

Ate a cupcake out of the garbage not too long ago. It was sitting on top and hadn't been there too long.

Super serial post, sorry:

So in the span of a couple years, three of my husband’s and my friends dropped dead of widowmaker heart attacks in their 30s and 40s. In November I had a brush with death giving birth to our son, whose middle name comes from one of those friends.

Today my husband had a heart attack due to a 100% blockage in the widowmaker artery. He got to UC and they saved his life because he didn’t screw around when he started feeling off. Not out of the woods yet but they cleared the blockage. The surgeon gave me printouts of the imaging during the cath showing the blockage and…Jesus Christ. Horror show. By the grace of God he’s still here.

Since this thread is mostly dudes…please, please don’t wait if you have cardiac symptoms.
So incredibly sorry to hear that, pretz. Prayers to you, your husband, and all of yours. 🙏

As always I notice someone going back and forth with someone I have on ignore and within a couple of posts of course the realization hits that’s it’s UKO. I cannot remember an interaction with him by anyone on this thread over the last ten years that was not an argument. In 10 years! Not one pleasant or normal thing can I remember him posting. There are people on here that know him in real life that can’t stand him. In real life! People on here that knew rogue at least defended him on here because he was nice and normal in real life. But not UKO. Do you have any idea how awful someone is that you don’t like them even after meeting them? Like seriously, how many people? Maybe 5%? Do you know how awful of a person you have to be to fall in that category? He didn’t even go to UNC but then watches UK games to specifically argue about UK games as a UNC fan. Does that sound normal? For the love of god put him on ignore.

Scherzinger paid a visit to our house last week. Likely a pregnant mouse holed up at our house. I had set up traps and grabbed 4-5. The pro came in and set more traps, had 7 caught Saturday morning. Said drought last year caused issues for major mouse population.

Not sure what Garrison gives you besides a breather. Has no offensive skill set.

Shouldn't have to be said but establish a relationship with your doctor. Get the mandated tests, colonoscopies, etc. It will save your life.

Matt Jones keeps talking about our bench being a problem. WE DON'T CURRENTLY HAVE A BENCH.

The guys we are playing by necessity (other than Otega and Amari) were supposed to be reserves -- and in some cases afterthoughts and flyers. Koby Brea and Kerr Kriisa were supposed to be the bench scoring, not Perry and Noah.

It remains pretty impressive that we were competitive at Alabama while playing spare parts, imo.

Earlier in the year, some people were complaining during the games about Williams dribbling at the top of the key and running offense through him. Now some of the same people are complaining that he doesn’t play enough. Make of that what you will.

I don’t think playing Williams more is a viable solution. Carr at the 5 might be reasonable against some teams. But Garrison has to play no matter what. Ultimately, our ceiling to some degree depends on him being more effective.

I disagree that he has no offensive skill set - he just isn’t a primary or even secondary ball handler. He sets good screens, has elite hands, has good vision for an big, and is a decent finisher. He just needs to attempt at least to protect the rim (with five fouls if necessary) and get on the glass. He could be a really good banger/garbage man, IMO, but playing behind Williams might have hurt him a bit. He’s just not a finesse guy like that. Anyway, we can afford to tread water with him.. just can’t hemorrhage on both ends.

Couple more BG thoughts:

This team seems to have been built around assembling smart, experienced basketball players who can adapt on the fly and execute. Execution is the lifeblood of this offense. We just don’t have players on this team who can make difficult shots at a high rate (Brea pull-up 3s being an exception), so we have to execute to get good looks - and we do. However, processing is probably the skill that is most limited for Garrison. Put another way, he’s arguably more of a Cal-type player than a Pope player. At the same time, he’s not quite big enough or skilled enough at other areas to just go get his buckets. I think this is part of why he struggles on offense, and it’s the most glaring when he tries to “keep up” with Williams.

On the other end of the court, his struggles are magnified by our injuries. It’s a lot different for a big man when the point of attack is defended by Lamont Butler than when it’s Travis Perry (no offense to Perry). Just seems like he’s pulled in three different directions at all times and - probably related to processing - he doesn’t really seem to know when to help and when not to, etc.

I am not as down on his future at most and I think he can get a lot better in a hurry. But right now it’s just a struggle. Improvement in any area - or just our team getting healthy - will probably help him in all zones.

* The dropoff from Amari Williams to Brandon Garrison is absolutely profound.

* Repeating a variation of a previous post: we've got 4 games left: 2 very winnable, and 2 against top-25 opponents. Then the SEC Tourney. The first NCAA Tourney game is 3+ weeks away. For Carr, Butler, and Robinson, I think they should sit as long as they need to get healthy, up to the 1st game of the Big Dance. I don't want to keep pushing these guys out there at 65% just to try to make a run at a 3-seed. If we finish out 2-2, do nothing in the SEC, and end up with a 5, then so be it. I'll take that at full strength (or as close as you can get to it) over a 3 still while still hobbling.

* Some highlights and lowlights of the weekend.....

- just a great time getting together with the bros. i think the real bonus was doing, well, basically NOTHING. no itinerary, no agenda, no tours or plans or reservations or appointments.
- sooooo many pajamas this weekend. don't think wcc or drxman ever left theirs.
- 73 was the real mvp, imo. came all the way in from california, and most of us hadn't seem him in years.
- backup mvp was 80 Proof, who rarely left the kitchen. lots of meat consumed.
- least likely to ever get invited: chief, UKO, cincycooper, brudjazz, rainman.
- Geese showin' out on the bourb selection. Home court advantage, imho.
- what a great group of dudes.
- Maverick was shown "only" twice. Probably could have left it on repeat all weekend and made most of the crew happy.

* Hubert Davis gets an extension. 😂

* Starting today, there's 8 straight days of Mardi Gras parades. No less than 3 in any given day.

* King cake is really a "thing" down here. I picked up 2 from Joe's Donuts (just a very ordinary coffee and donut shop) for the trip. If you go anywhere for a cookout/party/client meeting/etc around Mardi Gras, you have to bring one along. And if you walk in with a Dong Phuong or Manny Randazzo's, you marcus welby showing up at your friends house for dinner with a bottle of Pappy ready to rip thru the whole thing. Just pure stunting. Problem is, landing one of those usually involves waiting in line for an hour +. So Joe's it is.

My lass, as I was leaving the house Thursday morning: "don't you dare go back to Kentucky with some bitch ass king cake for your friends."

I slow rolled it. Brought one out Thursday night. The other on Saturday night. Both were gone in < 5 minutes.

* Elly made an out yesterday.

* My dog, she kicked it.

I get that line of thinking but the concern there would be them be rusty in a win or go home scenario.
