GYERO

Had a high school game canceled tonight due to weather. Was able to watch this game.

I have to stop watching. They play like ass when I watch. Didn’t watch Tuesday because I was in a high school gym. Sometimes it’s just that simple. I’ll do better, friends.
We are trying to win games with no real PG’s and Jaxon Robinson. And we still had it. Pope let them off the hook. I’m stunned he let that get away up 5 with 3:50 to play. That’s a Cal special right there.

Pope didn’t make them not box out multiple FT shooters down the stretch.

We got worn out because we’re playing shallow, got lazy and tired legs, and paid the price.

Not everything is “coaching.”
We’re basically held together by gum and duct tape right now. I can’t really get angry about a close road loss.

Up 5 with 3:40 to play and that bullshit left hand and one shot.

Not blocking out.

Careless passes.

Brea no showing.

That’s 2 we have flat out let slip away (vandy the other). Just a jekyl and Hyde team.

Rocket Scientist fell right into that half court trap the last 3-4 minutes.
Just stop with that, please. It's Year 1 and we're riddled with injuries on a roster pieced together in 6 weeks.

Not sure I can think of a UK team with so many significant players injured for this many games.

We're due some good luck. I think we'll get some.

It wasn’t me.

I never had an issue with the dbag until he decided to pretend I was begging him for money for some reason.

Posted screenshots of the actual conversation that cleared that up, and showed everyone he is a bet welching gaf too.

Seems to have short man complex or something which is sad really given his sports card success.

I find brady sarcastically calling pope rocket scientist, implying he’s not that smart and doesn’t coach intelligently off putting. OFF. PUTTING. He very well maybe right like Chumps when he started hating Cal back in 2016 or whenever it was, but this season doesn’t seem like the one. This would be if like Chumps starting calling Cal the fat wop in 2011.

We basically gave that one away but it’s a bit of a chore for this team to win without getting any offense from Brea while both Jax and Butler are out.

I was really hoping we could squeeze out at least two more road wins which would have been last night and at OU. Going into Tusc and beating Bama and at Mizz is pretty unlikely. Just take care of Vandy and LSU and get healthy as possible.

No shit!

We didn't have two of our best players. Brea didn't make a shot. We were 6/24 from deep. Perry had to run point nearly the whole game vs a desperate bubble team on the road. Yet we still almost won.

Hell, if we hit some more FTs instead of going 1 out of 2 all of those trips, then we probably do win. Blame Pope if you want, but that's some lazy arm chair analysis if you ask me. The man is keeping us competitive when we can barely field a team.

Get f'n real!

March 2018 to be technical. Right after they lost to Bruce Weber with gd Loyola-Chicago waiting in the E8. And I was right.
Twice a 16 has beaten a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. UK was in both regionals with their path to a FF seemingly becoming wide open. Both times we're eliminated by Kansas State.

Last night sucked, too many mistakes the last 4 minutes, Texas could have been called for more fouls than they were but that was actually the friendliest whistle we've gotten home or away in SEC play. At one point late we had been to the free throw line 10 more times but I stopped watching with a minute left so I'm not sure what the total ended up being.

Can't say enough how happy I am that Mark Pope is our coach this year. Not the coach a lot of us wanted but the one we needed. If it was still Cal, our schedule, both non conference and conference, is a lot tougher than Arkansas's. We'd be something like 10-14 now.

If it had been Hurley or Drew, I don't know what they could have put together on the fly. What Pope has done with a completely bare cupboard except for Perry coming in ranks up there with Jesus feeding the masses from five loaves and two fish. His love and enthusiasm just like we have for this program is something we really needed and wouldn't have gotten anywhere else. I also don't know being so well established and insulated at their current schools that they (and their spouses too) would handle push back from BBN if things didn't go well.

I think the early season defeats of Duke and Gonzaga built higher expectations than what we perceived after Pope built the roster in April/May. The continued run of of Top 10 wins exacerbated our expectations.

We would have all signed up for the results YTD with what we know now and the litany of injuries.

We are fine. This year is like playing with house money.

Just felt like a weird game. Really seemed like we were the better team despite missing our starting backcourt, our backup PG, another starter being a shell of himself, and getting a zero from Brea on offense. Obviously sucks to have lost that game the way we did, but winning that one was going to be a monumental task. My takeaways:

- Williams was unreal, despite giving up the late FT boards. Pretty wild that we have a Drexel transfer playing a Jokic-like role for us. He's been really good all season, but last night was legitimately eye-opening IMO. Played great defense and got some huge rebounds too.

Unlike Joker, he essentially has one or two post moves in his bag, but he's so strong that he can just back down his defender, and he's such an elite passer that you cannot send a double because he will absolutely punish you.

- Unfortunately, the drop-off from Williams to Garrison continues to be immense. Plus/minus doesn't reflect it but really thought we lost the game in his minutes. He's not uncomfortable with the ball in his hands, but he just isn't trustworthy enough to run offense through, IMO. And he provides a surprisingly little amount of rim protection for his size.

His truly elite skill is rolling, catching, and finishing. Would like to see us go to a more ball screen-heavy approach in his minutes. I think that is what we are doing, but could even be heavier with it.

- Brea wasn't hitting obviously, but I thought he actually played a good floor game and continues to show improvement on defense. And I have zero problem with any of the shots he took, especially with our current personnel.

- Perry got 28 minutes at lead guard in a late-season SEC road game. Don't think anybody saw that coming into the season. And I thought he was fine. Sure, probably shouldn't have been in down the stretch, but that's more hindsight than anything. Neither he nor Noah are scared whatsoever - they just come in and play ball, which is a compliment both to them and to the coaching.

- All in all, tough to swallow because of the end of the game, but if that stretch happened from 16:00 to 12:00 of the second half and we lost by 4, we'd probably feel differently. I know that's not exactly how it works, but still. And I'd like to tell myself we may end up winning another game or two because of that loss and how it happened.

If I told you we would beat Duke, UL, Gonzaga, FLA, UT(2) but lose to VANDY/Ark/TX or….

Beat Vandy/Ark/TX and lose to Duke/UL/GONZ/FLA & UT(2)

You would obviously choose the 1st one without thinking about it. Those 3 loses stink but in the grand scheme of things this has been quite a fun season already and without all of the other crap we’ve dealt with from Cal over the last decade.

Sure Pope does some things that leaves me scratching my head but I’ll take him over the fat wop any day.

I deep down knew after praising him for the previous 2 games he was going to come out with an alltime clunker. My bad.
