It's funny, the first experience at the races for me was 77 maybe, Kentucky Derby. I know I did not go in 78/79 because I never saw a triple crown winner.
I was fortunate to travel some up to New York as a kid from Pike County.
The Derby though, whew!

Affirmed won the TC in 78, Seattle Slew was 77. Spectacular Bid almost made it three in-a-row in 1979.
Genuine Risk and Gato Del Sol, respectively, and no I didn't have to look it up.
Bid lost the Belmont I think. The parents we always went with went to the Preakness and Belmont most years also.

5 days before the 1980 Derby, I was born. So was Josh Howard of Wake Forest/Dallas Mavericks fame. Oddly enough, Reunion Arena in Dallas opened the same exact day.

* I’m having back surgery on Tuesday; a microdiscectomy. Outpatient and minimally invasive, so it should be fine. I was a little nervous when the surgeon recommended it, not that I have ever been afraid of surgery, but surgery on my spine gives me a pause. It is totally irrational, but I felt immediately reassured and more secure in the decision, when the surgeon remarked that we are neighbors after looking at my information. 😬
The post-op instructions say that l am not to lift anything heavier than a coffee cup or a newspaper for 3 months; also no bending or twisting. UGH!
My daughter is coming to stay with me for a month, which is awesome and I am grateful that she can do that, but I hate hate hate having to depend on anyone to do things for me. Still I need to count my blessings and be grateful that I can get a pain free, mobile life back.
* Discovered a new beer that I really like. Shiner Candied Pecan. Yum.
* Totally hooked on Your Honor, but not in a good way. It just is inevitable that the train is going to wreck in a horrible fashion, but I can’t stop watching, all the while dreading the ending.
* It may not be a popular stance, but I feel for all these kids on our basketball team. They all try really hard. I don’t think lack of effort is an issue. Like everyone else, I am tired of, and angry about lineups that are detrimental to winning and make no logical sense.

My brother had back surgery Monday, quite possible at the same hospital, and while all seemed to go just fine his testicles turned black and swelled up like grapefruits less than 24 hours later. Hope this doesn’t happen to you.

Kidless staycation for the Lass and I this weekend. Staying at the Omni tonight and Saturday. La Bodeguita for dinner tonight and Ruby’s tomorrow. I imagine there will be plenty of ice cold domestos in between.
Stayed at the Omni one weekend, I believe the 17th floor but it didn't do it for me.

At this point I think I’d be happy with a room at the Comfort Inn. The tv doesn’t even have to work as long as there are no questions, no talking and no dishes or laundry.
