Heading into the season, I was really questioning the defense, we never seem to have a good one, and after losing Bud and Z, could not see how we could be very good this year either.

Boy, was I wrong. And damn glad to be wrong also.

Here is an interesting fact - last time Kentucky held three SEC opponents in a row to less than 24 points was 1999. (Beat Ark 31-20, USC 30-10, and LSU 31-5) Perhaps not coincidentally, that 1999 team went 4-4 in the conference. And now we have a great chance to at least break even and finish in the middle of the SEC this year as well.

It sure is nice to have a defense that will keep us in games, instead of going into every tough game needing to score 35-40 points to have a chance.

Don't forget we had a pick-six called back on a ridiculous flag. The defense is stout - especially the front seven. Linebackers, which looked like a liability the first few games with Hatcher and Flannigan out, now look like the single best unit on the team (after RBs). So far, to me, the only defensive weakness is that our safeties aren't particularly good at pass protection. Stamps and McWilson, both fantastic and stout in run support/short pass coverage, have a tendency to let wideouts get a step or two on them. And that's not too bad, because that's bound to happen in the SEC at some point anyway.

I agree with Tskware...losing Bud especially...I didn't think UK could be better on defense but so far appear we're on our way to a better statistical unit.

- I may be crazy...but I think Hugeungin is a better 3-4 DE than Zadarius was. Z was a better player in 4-3 for sure...but I see us way more stout vs. the run with Hugengin/CJ Johnson/Meant manning the DE spots. And Lewis is improved for sure at NT. We'll really see how far we've come vs. Auburn/UGA/Miss St-Prescott but so far, you can't just jam it down our throats this year.

- For sure LBer play is improved. Flannigan was fast on fast last night, Forrest is improved, Henderson is way better than he was last year. Those guys fill the holes much faster than last 2 years.

There's no mystery in that correlation. It's a tried and true school of thought in just about any sport, defense wins games. Missouri's offense is struggling, but doing it for 3 straight SEC games is impressive. Really gives us hope UK is going to get some more unexpected wins though I guess technically we were the favorite last night. And we may very well be against Auburn. That's a feather I'd really like to see in this team's cap. After they demolish EKU of course.

I am VERY pleasantly surprised with the linebackers!!!
THey seem to cover ground quickly and arrive with FASCIST FERVOR (like me at a 7/11 more or less)
D line hasn't been good since Brooks left -- it's starting to show SINS OF LIFE!!!!!!!!
