Great article describing our new special teams coaching setup in detail

I always thought about special teams as being the 3rd unit of a team along with the offense and defense and therefore it needed it's own coordinator. But since Stoops changed things, I realized what I guess should have been obvious. Special teams is NOT a 3rd unit, it's the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th units. Punt return, KO return, Punt coverage, KO coverage, Field goal attempt, Field goal coverage. Everyone one of these units has a different objective and has a different nucleus of players, so why not separate the coaching responsibilities accordingly? I think this is a smart move and it's reinforced by the fact that Pinkel does it too, who I can consider to be one of the smartest coaches out there.

UK needs a more explosive return game. It can be a game changer and we haven't had that since Cobb. I am concerned about the kicking game...Is there someone that knows it well enough to correct problems with mechanics (like a pitching coach)?

Why are you concerned about the kicking game? FGs and punts were the strengths of the special teams last year so should only be better this year. I'm confused. I'm more concerned about finding a punt returner who can actually return a punt and not a fair catcher.

I more concerned about D on 3rd down, just hope for improvement over last year.

Wow, we are the only SEC team that has not scored a special teams TD since 2011.
Cobb ran a punt back in 10 and Locke KO in 09.
Wow

Catching the punt is far and away the most important thing. Advancing the ball is nice, but a fumbled punt is a disaster. Your defense had gotten off the field only to have to come right back on, often in serious danger of giving up a score.
