Grade the Play Calling

I give him a B. He loses a whole letter grade for that QB run call in the 4th. Actually I thought the WRs were basically running free all night so I can understand the heavy pass ratio. The problem was that our QB wasn't getting them the ball.

As for the folks who are lamenting a lack of play calls for the middle of the field or for the TE, my question is how do we know those plays weren't called or were an option for the QB who simply didn't execute it.

How can you grade the coaches play calling when according to Dawson himself Towles is the one editing the playbook??

People who cheered this at first need to think real hard how much sense this makes.

Totally agree....inexcusable for Boom to only get 10 touches.....one of those a 75 yd run....PT is NOT an elite qb....he shouldn't be the focus of this offense

The fan base will never be satisfied. All we have heard for years is vertical, vertical, vertical. First half the fans get just that and they're still not satisfied. The play calling was fine. The execution and effort wasn't. We got lax in the second half and our focus and execution suffered. We lost our edge. This team will be fine. Just growing pains.

All good points, however if that is true the I would think the coaches would change strategy and say give the ball to Boom and let's utilize the middle of the field. I doubt they would let PT give the game away on his calls only.

You can't over work Boom it's got to be split carries with Horton as the hammer wearing defenses down and boom getting the call once the defense is worn down. You give it to Boom 20+ times a game and he's done before mid season.

A... Offensive play calling was one of the bright spots. Dawson made some good play calls in the 2nd half too. Execution was the problem.

Exactly. Our WR were open deep on every drop back. Towles left at leat 21 points on the field with errant throws.

There were 2 perfectly timed and executed screens, that wouldve been TDs had Towles gotten the ball there.

There was a perfectly time draw to Boom which was huge.

All in all, seemed like Dawson had a much better pulse on the game than Brown. If Towles executes, we end up with 60 or 70 points. We played mediocre and still put up 40 against a good team. That speaks volumes.

Towles hits open guys, we score 60 and everyone loves the play calls. He doesn't, and you hate the call. Dawson was right to exploit their secondary, our dudes were beating them consistently. First half, A+.

Second half, seemed he was more focused on getting PT into rhythm instead of calling a sensible game. That actually does make sense because this is the first real game experience this year, and we've got USC and Florida looming. We'll need our QB then. However, once it got within two scores, it's time to go back to the running game and over the middle. We didn't do that and it made the game a tie. C+ second half, should have run them out of it before it got back to being tied. EDIT: forgot about the draw play, that was a PERFECT call.

C+. Called a very aggressive game which I love. He did ignore the middle of the field and should have run the ball more. Our backs were the best position on the field and at times seemed totally ignored. Boom had 75 yards on the first play but didn't reach 80 yards until the 4th quarter. He needed more carries. ULL had no answer for him. Mikel and Jo jo were great as well and needed more touches also.

I'm right now watching the replay of the game. I have to elevate my grade to a B+. ULL was stacking the line. The deep throws is what he should have called even in the 3rd quarter. Also our WRs were badly beating the ULL DBs. Nothing wrong with the play calls we just have to hit the passes. The come back was mostly the responsibility of poor throws. Patrick has to get better or he will not finish the game next week as the starter.
