Grade the Play Calling

Very aggressive, likes the vertical passing game. First game I give him an 8.

However, he didnt adjust when ULL took that go route away in the second. If the oline could have run blocked as well as they pass blocked we may have seen more runs in the 2nd....maybe?

I would give him an 8 for the first half, 5 for the second half. I think his lack of a major adjustment later in the game was because of not knowing who he could really count on at crunch time. He will have a better idea for the next game.

C+. Called a very aggressive game which I love. He did ignore the middle of the field and should have run the ball more. Our backs were the best position on the field and at times seemed totally ignored. Boom had 75 yards on the first play but didn't reach 80 yards until the 4th quarter. He needed more carries. ULL had no answer for him. Mikel and Jo jo were great as well and needed more touches also.

C+ thought he could of used the middle more on some crucial 3rd downs we failed to convert on. Want to see Conrad with 5-7 touchs atleast a game. Huge weapon that was never even taken out of the case. Hopefully next week.

I'd have to give it an A- I only saw maybe two plays the whole game that I didn't like and that's it. Pat just has to be more accurate and settle down and we win that game by 20 + I mean we had 5 players out and 3 of those are starters on D. Very valuble experience tonight for some true fresh and RS fresh. That will pay off alot next game. As well as on D we played it very vanilla not trying to show to much for next game. Everything is gonna be fine. Great game overall. That's a pretty good team we just beat.

I wasn't a big fan of the constant passing late in the game, when it was clear the defense needed a break and Towles was not playing well. A lot of the vertical passing was there if Towles makes the right throws. For a first game, it was solid and should improve.

Loved the play calling. Our wide outs were about as open as you can ask for most the game and Towles wasn't making the throws or making them late. We all remember the bad throws from Patty, but was more troublesome to me was how slow he made decisions. The out route to Juice where it was reviewed needed to be thrown at the break. The fade route to Bone where Bone was standing and waiting needed to be thrown sooner so that Bone could make a 1 on 1 play. The slant to Dorian inside the 5 was open at his cut but Towles delivered a poor throw 2 seconds too late. The plays are there, Towles just isn't executing at a high level right now.

The draw play to Boom for a 30 yard gain? Beutiful (on a side note, did Boom appear to have lost a step??). The batted down screen play to Horton was a great call, but of course Patty didn't execute and almost got picked off.

I would like to see more motion stuff and misdirection, but all in all, I'm not sure Dawson could have called a much better game. ULL absolutely took away the run game between the tackles.

He was a 12 year old playing Madden - 'THROW IT DEEP THEY'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING'. Failed to get our best playmakers the ball at all in the second half. No playaction, no running offense - 10 carries for Boom? Come on. People giving him an A are crazy. We won the game, so he gets a C.

Remembering we were trying to keep our playbook out of sight from SC and UF I think it was great.

Second straight thread I've seen you complain in. Just saying.
I was perfectly fine with the play-calling. I was irritated by the execution. Towles overthrowing players by a step, T.V. Williams dropping a pass after it hit him right in the numbers, and really, the middle of the defense (which should be better when we get our starters back).

Playcalling was mostly fine I think.....I just cannot believe we cannot run block against ULL. We will have virtually no running game whatsoever in the SEC with this O-Line. They are pure garbage.

On defense, I saw our D-Line popping straight up at snap while their O-Line was driving us back.

Can someone explain to me WTF Brumbaugh and Stoops are teaching on the D-Line? Please explain it to me before I lose my mind watching this garbage against a Sun Belt Team.

It's not that he ignored the middle of he field. ULL literally played a one high safety the hole game. In the middle of the field... They took the middle of the field out the game.

I would give a B. I loved the aggressive down the field calls in the 1st half but in the 2nd half, with Towles struggling, I think we should have tried to run it more.

To be fair, if Towles connects on several of those bad 2nd half misses, we would all be giving a grade of A.

Thought we should have ran the ball more late in the game when we had the big lead and that would have allowed the
defense to rest. Glad we got the win but we need to work on the managing the clock more too.

Come on now, one wr with a semi-deep crossing pattern takes that safety away. If we cannot open the field against ULL then we are in trouble the rest of the season.

A... Offensive play calling was one of the bright spots. Dawson made some good play calls in the 2nd half too. Execution was the problem.

Read technique? I'm not positive on this. D line is not my area of expertise. But pretty sure our linemen occupy blockers and allow the linebackers to make the play.

I agree with you on this and it almost got us beat. Where was all the passes to the TE we heard about and I think we got very conservative when we got the big lead. We should have put them away in the first half and we didn't. I'm all for putting in fresh running backs, back I don't think Boom got in any kind of rhythm after that first carry. All that being said, I liked the vertical passing game, but I feel next week and going forward, teams are going to take that away and make Patrick make the easy pass and last night proved that the easy pass wasn't always easy.

Yeah, I am complaining. It was just bad. Ten touches for our best player is inexcusable, laughable, horrendous decision making. Towles was bad, but the playcalling didn't play to his strengths, either.

We don't have the talent to march up and down the field on any team in the country. We have to be smarter and play to our strengths more.

What are his strengths? And tell us how the play calling could have catered to them? They played press early and we exploited it. They made adjustments and we didn't execute in the short passing game.

We were up 33-17, ULL scored 33-25, defense needs a break, need to pound the ball.

First play, long pass, it's open but underthrown by 10 yards, interception. Terrible call.

They score, tie the game. Defense needs a break, need to pound the ball at the defense with our big back. Three passes and out, 16 seconds off the clock. Terrible play calling.

We're driving for the winning score 1:11 left, we have the ball inside the 25. Running out the clock is more important than anything else at this point, and we throw a pass at the end zone, lucky to get a defensive hold on the play. Terrible call.

Finally we come to our senses, put our big back in the game, and he runs it in the end zone to salvage a victory.

I'm not calling for anyone's head, but I'll give Coach Dawson a D (maybe a D+/C- at best) for his first game.

I will not grade a D, but this post has some solid points, along with ignoring the middle of the field and zero utilization of the TE.

If you call the correct play call against the coverage and it doesn't work doesn't mean it wasn't the right call lol. Pat didn't execute he under-threw passes and over passes that were OPEN on many occasions. The call was correct the execution was not. That doesn't make it a bad play call.

I was happy with the play calling, although he got a little too pass happy at times. I think Dawson will get better as the season goes on with his play calling. The execution on the other hand I'm not thrilled with. Towles missed too many open receivers, and he didn't go through his progressions well at all. I expected more out of Patrick to be honest.

Quoted because that's my take.

But getting our receivers isolated one on one is what we want with our talent, don't you think?

I loved the play calling. I also liked how there was:
-only 1 blatant drop (TV Williams) that I recall
-no false start penalties
-no illegal formation penalties (we probably averaged 3 of these per game in the Neal Brown era)
-the oline protected well on the deep ball
-we finally saw WRs getting open
-the skill position players protected the football

Pretty much the only thing holding the offense back is Towles misfiring on so many throws.

It seemed like the only thing we did for much of the game was to throw down field.

B+ first half, C- second half. I know BBN loves when they air it out, after all UK and the air raid offense have a long history; but I don't get all the pass plays in the second half. Controlling the clock and game management are very important, especially in the SEC. I know a lot of people believe the problem was execution, but I think the right play calls would have mitigated those issues. When you have a guy like Boom Williams slow the offense down and run the clock out.

The fan base will never be satisfied. All we have heard for years is vertical, vertical, vertical. First half the fans get just that and they're still not satisfied. The play calling was fine. The execution and effort wasn't. We got lax in the second half and our focus and execution suffered. We lost our edge. This team will be fine. Just growing pains.

AMEN! The middle of the field and the TE's need to be used. We've heard all summer about how good conrad is gonna be but they didn't show it.

How can you grade the coaches play calling when according to Dawson himself Towles is the one editing the playbook??

People who cheered this at first need to think real hard how much sense this makes.

Totally agree....inexcusable for Boom to only get 10 touches.....one of those a 75 yd run....PT is NOT an elite qb....he shouldn't be the focus of this offense
