Yep. You build teams from the inside out. No different than football where you build the trenches first if you want to put a title contender together.

The bigs don’t have to be your star players offensively, you don’t have to run the O through them, but you have to be stout inside, control the glass, and defend well…without it, you’re a paper tiger.

There are also fewer grown man, developed, versatile skill set, big men in The college game than there are good guards able to compete day one in CBB…makes sense to build the interior and then go get some guards to round out the roster

Excellent point. It’s always said that the thing that separates the Power 5 from Mid majors are the bigs because you can find good guards alot easier. Infact the Oakland coach mentioned it.

Pope is doing an awesome job with all aspects from renewing the BBN relationship, adding impressive staff, adding players, and providing a lot of excitement. Whomever was hired, I felt it would be a down year and then the impact would happen. Instead, it is not going to be a down year and there is hope.

Plus some here don't yet seem to understand (from posts even today on the latest transfer) that Pope is adding a variety of one and done senior portal transfers along with transfers where they will develop for a longer stay consistency. This is not Cal's b.s. style but instant and long-range thinking combined.

Amazing what has so quickly occurred.
