Good article on Sumrall and UK...

That article just makes me sad. It is something that is unattainable right now which makes thinking about "What could be" even harder.

Thanks Mitch. 😫 😫 😫 😭😭😭😡😡😡

Replace Sumrall in the sections about “bring home one of their own” and “staying in Lexington as long as allowed” with Joker and what do you get?

By no means saying he couldn’t do it but setting Sumrall up with extreme expectations won’t end well for the fans. Building a program is a marathon, not a sprint. Can’t predict what the man is capable of but stop with making him look like the next coming of Bear Bryant.

Well given that Sumrall has been a HC at two schools and won at both and Joker was an OC with no HC experience at all, I don’t think it would really make sense to swap their names. Even as a thought experiment

So HC in AAC > OC in SEC?
That checks out…
Yes, if at a losing SEC program. If he's the OC at Alabama, that's a closer call.

Here's another way to look at it. Sumrall will be on "top candidates to replace" list for _____ just about ANY P4 exiting coach this year and next, with the only exceptions places like Ohio St. if they get rid of Day. He's already looked at as a UNC target. Joker was considered a viable option for ONE P5 program, ours. If a list is made of all top prospects for P4 positions, Sumrall will be No. 1 or No. 2 on every list.

Yes. HC experience is always going to be worth more, all things being equal. There are obviously exceptions and guys can make the jump from OC to HC and low level HCs can fail on the call up.

But in general, it’s a much safer bet to take a winning HC than an unproven coordinator

Indiana cannot be compared to UK.
First, the schedule is not even close to what Kentucky has played.
Secondly, Indiana has started off at the complete bottom, whereas, Kentucky has had at least marginal success.
Mark stoops had an easy schedule for years in the down sec east and should have done much more than he initially did. If the sec if so great, why is Texas dominating in year one, Missouri won sec east twice in their first few years, and Oklahoma crushing bama in year one. That old excuse is overrated. It's a great conference but not the end all be all

Your second point actually supports the poster to whom you responded. Whether they deserve it or not, Indiana is going to the playoffs. It's more impressive to accomplish that at Indiana than Kentucky. The 2023 Indiana team was horse manure. We were disappointing, but still with some credibility. This year, Indiana might beat us by 40 to 50 points.

Joker was a victim of a thing called the "Peter Principle" - that's the difference in hiring a successful HC of a smaller school versus and OC at a larger school. The OC might work out - but being the head man is an entirely different job and takes a lot of different skills than being a co-ordinator. Not saying co-ordinators don't work out - but many of them never move up or fail when they do move up. Just a different animal. In all seriousness - Joker seemed like a good OC - I can see why schools would consider him for that position -but he wasn't and isn't head coaching material. Stoops has really not proved he has to be a great head coach - he has proven he can be a head coach - when he was hungry and younger!

Go Big Blue!

I would add, yeah, Indiana played mostly a crap schedule. But I seriously doubt we would've done much against that schedule ourselves. We got absolutely smoked by Louisville. It's not like Louisville is that much better than most of the Indiana conference opponents. Neither are Vanderbilt and Auburn and Florida. Against that crap Indiana schedule, we might, might be 6 and 6.
