******Game Thread Colgate vs UK*******

I actually think that if Brea manages to hit 50% of his threes on the season, he’s a late first rounder. The NBA/G league coaches will work on his defensive issues.

Yes, and I've seen him being mentioned and I want to say I've seen Oweh as well. It definitely could happen, and games like the ones against duke and Gonzaga are what help these guys get noticed.

But it still seems like this roster as is, probably a little shy of being worthy of a Final4 in most years. Not saying it can't happen, and I think Pope is having them play very much above their abilities.. so anything is possible.

I just can't wait to see what he does with a guy like Moreno or Caleb Wilson (if we get him). Also can't wait to see what transfers he can attract in year 2 or which of these current guys he can really get going.

I kind of want to look this up tomorrow.. but I suspect a very high percentage of title teams had at least one first round draft pick, and I bet the same applies for final 4 teams (obviously you have wild runs like Loyola). I'm not saying you HAVE to have an NBA talented player on your roster, but it sure helps.

Baylor still had lottery pick Davion Mitchell. Uconn had Newton and Castle and Clingan. Houston has lottery pick Jarace Walker, Alabama has pistol-holding Brandon Miller. Virginia had DeAndre Hunter, their opponent Texas tech had lottery pick Jarret Culver..

Kentucky doesn't currently have a 1st round pick projected (tankathon doesnt even have us with a 2nd either) and i think if you want to win in March it really helps if you have that NBA-level talent that can just outperform most other teams opponents, or atleast a couple guys worthy of the 2nd round.

I think this will be the biggest thing in the Pope era. Can he recruit.

You know if we just kept Cal on for his recruiting and then had Pope's coaching, we might be onto something here lol

I feel pretty confident. We have a top5 class next year even without Caleb and any others.

If I'm not mistaken, all of our current recruits next year will be ranked higher than anyone on this team. Johnson, Moreno and Lewis are all 33rd or higher. Maybe I'm missing someone on this team who was higher but even so, that tells you just much more more talent we will have, as soon as next year.

It would be really cool to see Caleb Wilson in blue and to have the green light that Robinson - who is not an NBA player - has.

People acting like laying without 2 of you’re top 7 that both play the same position is supposed to be nothing against any level of team. Sure, we came together in the moment to pull out a win in a 10 min spurt (after Kerr played a massive role in cutting the lead to 5)….. ppl here acting like we suddenly didn’t need a PG bc Jax can play there until Butler was back. Well…hopefully everyone realizes how valuable not only butler…but Kerr is. And that Perry isn’t the answer this season. All the Perry fans need to realize he will have a chance his JR and SR year and tk wait

Bama didn’t have Brandon miller last year but I agree with your point.

Ah was I off by one year with Miller? I wasn't sure.

So they are one of the exceptions, and even their holdovers into this year, don't seem to be on the NBA radar. But, then you realize they also have one of the hottest coaches right now in Nate Oats and I think they are a similar example of what UK could be: a good team, with an exceptional coach and system that elevates them to the next level.

Staying healthy I think is going to be more important for this team than any we've had in recent history.

There's just not enough depth here to have long term injuries and be ok.

It's clearly this is not the same team without Butler.

And Kerr is a big time energy guy and some would say that lacked tonight.

Good thing is, Butler will be back soon and that changes everything. But have to keep him healthy. If that ankle is banged up and we play Tuesday night at an SEC opponent? You really have to think of holding him out and if we lose we lose. But it's clear how bad we need him.

When you disrespect your opponent by not taking them seriously, this is what happens. When you think you can take the night off this is what happens. This game wasn't a one off; it has become a 4 game trend. If Few had been smart enough to pressure Jaxson instead of letting him advance the ball at his pace, the outcome would have probably been different. If Colgate was smart enough to pressure the ball knowing that we were playing without a point guard, what was Few thinking.

I am sure Gonzaga is wondering how the hell did they lose that game after watching this debacle. If this was Arkansas playing like this against a team with only 2 wins and their best player injured, we would be laughing uncontrollably. This was supposed to be a game that would give Perry and Noah lots of playing time because of the big lead we would have. NOT!!!
We had a 17-0 lead and CMP TRIED to give Perry some minutes to see what he could do........and we lost all momentum and had no continuity on offense or defense with Perry and the other subs in there.

Pope did what a lot of fans have been clamoring for.....give Perry playing time.......and it almost cost the team big time.

If you can't trust a sub with a 17 point lead, when can you afford to put one in the game???

Perry and Chandler shouldn’t play another meaningful minute this year.

You know I didn't really consider that decision, but you are spot on. It is obvious that they are not close to being ready.

That's one way to look at it. Pope has set the season's expectation, and the top wins we've accrued have solidified that. However, the chronic lack of effort we've shown betrays that.

I'm not going to be happy with this effort just because the team isn't as bad as it could've been. I'm going to hold the team to a high standard based on how good we can be.
From the look on Pope's face at the end of the game, I'm SURE he wasn't happy about what took place tonight.

It will be interesting to see how he handles this adversity with this team.

I just know he won't ignore it and hope it goes away.

These guys look like whipped pups. Some posters might get upset by my comments, but the truth hurts. They are playing like hot garbage tonight.
I would guess that almost every team is like this though. Most fans watch every game their team plays and a few games of other teams. We don't see it when those teams do this because why would we watch Duke against the Word Incarnate or whatever the hell that team is called? They led 27-21 at the half. It sucks as a fan, but it's just a fact of life. Teams have spells where they phone it in, usually against bad opponents in the middle of the week, and close to the holidays.

I’m often wonder if some of these people have amnesia. We have at least one of these games every year. Cal even lost a few of them. As you said, it’s usually midweek as heavy favorites sometime between the week of Thanksgiving and Christmas and usually follows a big win. Evansville was immediately after beating No. 1 Michigan State. UNCW was the game after pounding a then-ranked Miami team.

We played lethargic, uninspiring basketball for about 18 minutes after the 17-0 start and then got serious again.

We’re coming off a tough loss, a huge OT win on the other side of the country and have the first “big” home game of the season against our in-state rival on Saturday and we’re playing without PG1 and PG2. It’s human nature to overlook lowly Colgate and think we will win simply by wearing Kentucky jerseys. The 17-0 start probably added to that false sense of security.

He’s already proving he can recruit, he recruited this team in 2 weeks and already has a top 3-4 class easy especially if we get Wilson.

Yeah we have had many of these over the years, I’m glad we got it out before the Louisville game. It seems like this team plays to its level of competition sometimes. Like a lot of teams. It is up to Pope to get them out of that mindset and bring it 40 minutes every game.

In fairness, this game highlighted effort issues that are starting to define the team, and that's a problem for the rest of the season. We can't rely on a strong second half in the SEC gauntlet.

I'd argue we have two of the five best wins in Men's CBB so far this season, but this team needs to do some soul searching.
We all see things in our own way. A hodge podge of guys learning a new system and having a great season along the way and with the starting quarterback on the bench the last two games and the backup quarterback on the bench the last game makes me very proud it doesn’t lead me to believe they need to soul search. I guess we could bring in BCG to put them in stalls and tell them to get 10% tougher.

What a ride.

Yep. And NCAA takes this kind of stuff into consideration. It won't cost a seed line, but if there's a tie for a seed or something, they can factor this in. "Man, Kentucky didn't beat Colgate as much as they should've."
But we are not in a vacuum. Almost every yeam has a “bad win” or a bad loss. Very few have top 10 wins particularly with teams still in the top 10

It is because Kentucky has played their 3 toughest games and shot terribly in all of them. Every game from here on out expect brown is gonna be tough, and those numbers suggest that Kentucky will not shoot to the occasion. Now I don’t think they will be this bad all year, they have to start making some eventually. But the trends lately are definitely concerning a little
I dont disagree with you on 3s. But we shoot very well from two. I think with butlers return the flow will be bettet and the threes will start going in.
