******Game Thread Colgate vs UK*******

I think this is a good thing tho.

Like I think the computers definitely take this into account.

For the humans that are still doing the seeding, it's still very much a matter of "did you win". Just too many games from every team to focus on a specific game in the middle of December against Colgate
Depends on how your season goes as well. If you have a bunch of nailbiters, this will be more remembered.

Yes I misconstrued what I was trying to say. If we played AGAINST a 14/15-seed, is what I meant.
Yeap. I trust that Pope will have gotten through their thick skills regarding the slow starts and lackadaisical play. He has a legitimate contender on his hands.

LOL, late game at Clemson, late game all the way to the west coast. Down 2 players all of the sudden and some are jumping off of a cliff. Pathetic.

And classic makings of a trap game: Bad team sandwiched between a big west coast win that ended at 1 am and a big home rivalry game.

In fairness, this game highlighted effort issues that are starting to define the team, and that's a problem for the rest of the season. We can't rely on a strong second half in the SEC gauntlet.

I'd argue we have two of the five best wins in Men's CBB so far this season, but this team needs to do some soul searching.
We didnt even have a roster in May. Now were ranked 5th and already have two gargantuan wins. Sane fans are enjoying this year as its a total bonus..

is it tho?

Those games already occurred and we went 4-1 in them with a win over Gonzaga.

Why should the last five games indicate something but the first five doesn't?

Our actual 3 point shooting percentage will prob be in mid 30%s...........average for a D1 school.
It is because Kentucky has played their 3 toughest games and shot terribly in all of them. Every game from here on out expect brown is gonna be tough, and those numbers suggest that Kentucky will not shoot to the occasion. Now I don’t think they will be this bad all year, they have to start making some eventually. But the trends lately are definitely concerning a little

I think posters are calling a spade a spade. When these guys play up to their potential, they get the praise they deserve, but when they struggle to beat a 2 win team at home, they should be criticized.

Or the numbers are just representative of a small sample.

We'll see after 18 SEC games where they stand. I predict around 35-36%.

I just think they need to realize that they aren’t more talented than everybody. And that they are gonna have to take the Louisville approach fo beat teams moving forward. Outwork them and make 3s. The effort has to up every game from here on out

We didn’t look good tonight but we still won. I like them having things to work on going into the Louisville game.

Plenty of things for Coach to run them over. Hopefully they come out with a fire on Saturday
Absolutely agree. I think Pope will use this sharpen us.
We will play better Saturday by a mile.

There's SEC records being discussed here and we need to have a discussion.

If this team goes 11-7 in SEC play.......this season......that is NOT BAD.

I'm just throwing that out there.

Like we could go 11-7 and still get a 2 seed or 3 seed. The wins vs Duke and Gonzaga. Any other non conference big win. 11 SEC wins. That's a stellar resume.
Yeah.

Every road game in the SEC could be a quad 1 win opportunity.

We could have 6 quad 1 wins in conference with a 11-7 record in the SEC. Add in Duke, Gonzaga, and potentially Ohio State, we'd have a great resume.

"We beat Duke and Zaga! We can beat anybody!"

But yes, you can also LOSE to anybody.

The freaking back 2 back defending champs lost 3 in a row to unranked schools. NOTHING is a guaranteed win anymore. Every team you play gets your A or A+ game. That is what Kentucky basketball is about.

Eh.....kinda. We played like poo against WKU for awhile as well. Played like poo against the Zags too.

Gotta have some better first halves or we're going to get annihilated by some SEC squads.
That first game against Florida is very dangerous. Start off slow against them and your
in a hole at half you might not be able to come back from

That's one way to look at it. Pope has set the season's expectation, and the top wins we've accrued have solidified that. However, the chronic lack of effort we've shown betrays that.

I'm not going to be happy with this effort just because the team isn't as bad as it could've been. I'm going to hold the team to a high standard based on how good we can be.

Yeah in portions of those games but at the end of the day we either played at or exceeded in the Zags game the expectations.

We played like crap for a large portion of the Duke game too. But Duke and Zags were favored so any win for UK in those obviously look good.

It's a good point tho and one that I said after the Zags game (and got blasted for).

The computers look at the end result. But I think it's important to see how you've gotten to that end point.

This team cannot continue to play like crap in the first half of games...........especially in March in a one and done tournament. It won't work out well. It's begging for an early bounce.

Fill that blank in with any SEC team. EweTee will blister the crap out of us playing like that. And you all KNOW how much I hate those orange turds. Last thing we need in the borderlands is a cocky ass TN.

Yeah that’s kinda of my point, in the duke and Gonzaga game, Kentucky just gave max effort and out worked and out executed them both in the second half’s. That’s what they have to do moving forward. They can’t just show up and think they have more talent, because they don’t in most cases anymore. Now pope will make adjustments, I know that for a fact, but these players need to execute

JFC we're missing BOTH our point guards.

Give it a rest. We won comfortably.

See i don't know. I don't think this roster is a legitimate contender. I think if we make it to a F4 or somehow win the title, it's going to be BECAUSE of Pope.. his offense, his adjustments, and these players buying in and hitting shots. I think he has this team overachieving a bit.

But again, we didn't have Butler tonight, so it's hard to take much from this game. I suspect we will be much better when he's back, same with Kerr and his energy.

Probably an unpopular opinion but what most are considering a lack of effort, I'm seeing as a lack of talent.

Is Amari Williams lazy or he is just not a really good basketball player?

I tend to think it's more of the latter.

Exactly. These are good players, not sure if they are great players. Many weren't on recruiting radars of P5 teams, they're still in college for a reason as 4 and 5 year players. I believe Butler is the only one with true NCAAT experience (or at least more than a game or two).

I'm not going to call Williams lazy. There are times where he clearly watches things unfold and doesn't go for loose balls, though. There are times he does. The difference is stark when he's on vs off. I think Williams is talented. He's not an AD or a Cousins, but he's good.

Yep. And it's not to say this team couldn't make a run. But there's a reason why these guys have been in college several years.

In defense of Amari, he has been pretty dang good since about 10 minutes left in the Gonzaga game. He just played his best game of the season.

I think he is lazy. Just to casual, no desire. How many times has he just stood and watched as a smaller player scores in the lane. How many layups has he missed?
He should be dominating against these lesser teams

I should have added "IF Garrison and Williams decide to start becoming forces underneath the basket". Garrison can do that, but better positioning and not putting the ball on the floor. Carr is doing great. Get the two bigs going, and the team to buy in running all of the offense. Not just the dribble drive nonsense out on top. Cut, give and go, and kick it back out.

I kind of want to look this up tomorrow.. but I suspect a very high percentage of title teams had at least one first round draft pick, and I bet the same applies for final 4 teams (obviously you have wild runs like Loyola). I'm not saying you HAVE to have an NBA talented player on your roster, but it sure helps.

Baylor still had lottery pick Davion Mitchell. Uconn had Newton and Castle and Clingan. Houston has lottery pick Jarace Walker, Alabama has pistol-holding Brandon Miller. Virginia had DeAndre Hunter, their opponent Texas tech had lottery pick Jarret Culver..

Kentucky doesn't currently have a 1st round pick projected (tankathon doesnt even have us with a 2nd either) and i think if you want to win in March it really helps if you have that NBA-level talent that can just outperform most other teams opponents, or atleast a couple guys worthy of the 2nd round.

UK doesn't win national titles without several nba talents.

I actually think that if Brea manages to hit 50% of his threes on the season, he’s a late first rounder. The NBA/G league coaches will work on his defensive issues.
