Hot women, fast cars, explosions, gun fights, ridiculous stunts. Can't wait to see it this weekend! IMO, this is one of those rare franchises where they just keep getting better and better.

I respectfully disagree. I see them as just total nonsense at this point. They ripped off the movie Point Break with the original and then made a decent one with the fourth installment and then just turned the movies into Ocean's 11 with cars. I saw the preview for the newest one and just shook my head. It looks ridiculous.

So I'd love to go see it because, well, it looks awesome. My problem is that I haven't seen the first six and I don't have time to watch all of them right now. But everyone I know is going this weekend and I don't want to be left out. Am I going to be totally lost or can I catch up with the plot pretty fast? TIA

Well, there's at least got to be some setup about why whoever it is is furious. Obviously the cars can be fast without any plot, but as I see it you have to have some backstory to be furious. It's not the Fast and Bad-tempered, which would require no setup. Whoever it is is furious. So this person has gone past, at some point, being just angry. He may have been somewhat pissed even before that. But now he's furious and I need to know why if I'm going to enjoy the movie.

Cliff notes:

Vin Diesel's character ran a garage as a front for a crime ring that hijacked DVD players from semis in the first one. Paul Walker's character is a cop/former cop/fallen cop/real cop that was put on the case, undercover. He infiltrates the underground street racing scene, becomes friends with Vin and his pals, ultimately uncovers that he's behind it and conflict ensues but all kind of works out dumbly in the end.

The second and third ones don't really have anything to do with the current plot of the movies. Paul Walker's character picks up more buddies along the way, they join he and Vin Diesel and the original crew, and they make various heists, fight various bad guys, etc. In the sixth one, they killed the leader of this big evil organization, who happened to be Jason Statham's brother apparently.

So I assume the seventh one is about Jason Statham trying to get revenge. Somehow that will involve million dollar cars and military grade weapons.

The only other important back story is that Walker's character and Diesel's sister (Mia) are married and have a kid, and that virtually everyone in the movie has been to jail, has sworn to never go back to jail, and just generally gets themselves in these deadly situations to avoid doing 5 years for petty crime.

They are fun. Obviously it is insanely ridiculous ... BUT IT IS A MOVIE! If you want something more like real life, stay home and read a biography.

Some spring/summer blockbuster popcorn movies are suppose to be fun and enjoyable ... not every movie has to be an Oscar contender.

I'm 36 years old and love them, and so does my wife.

How are they getting better? Cause to me it's becoming more like the Fake and Furious with the Micheal Bay cgi stunts.

F&F - The original was great, nice car stunts.
2F2F - Eva Mendes was nice eye candy, all I remember is Tyrese going around saying "I'm Hungry"
F&F Tokyo - should have went straight to DVD
F&F 4 - The hijacking was great at the start but you can see them add a lot more CGI like the tunnels.
Fast 5 - IMO the second best movie of the franchise purely for the chase scenes especially the safe heist.
F&F 6 - makes me wish 5 was the last of the series, and the over the top CGI stunts made me wonder if Micheal Bay was directing.

It's the girlfriend's favorite franchise so I had to see it last night. It was entertaining. I don't think there will be a lot of Oscar buzz or anything, but it kept my interest. Worth $1.40 at Redbox for sure.

The difference between the FF movies and Michael Bay movies is that MB takes his movies way too seriously and they're filled to the brim with product placement. FF does have product placement (Corona and the cars obviously) but to a much lower extent. Also FF movies know exactly what they are and embrace it. MB is in denial.

This is actually the first one I've seen in theaters (went with family to take my mind off the waiting game for our disaster of a game last night), and it was utterly ridiculous, unrealistic nonsense....that completely held my interest and entertained me for 2+ hours. I thought it was great for what it is, an over the top, unrealistic action movie. If you look at it that way, I doubt these movies can disappoint you.

I will say it was a bit bizarre to go from over the top action flick to glorified tear jerker attempt the last 5 minutes with the Brian O'connell (aka Paul Walker) tribute, but I did think that was well done as a fine tribute and the delivery by the actors/friends of Walker was very authentic as it was, although it felt a tad bit out of place in the context of just the fictional story world.
