Kemp said it was self defense. He claims he traced some guys who stole items from his car to a local mall. He claims that he approached them and they shot at him.
I need more details.
I carry a concealed weapon, and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot someone if they shot at me first. Maybe Kemp is lying, but I need to see more details.

It's tricky, they may have found that actually the other guys were acting in self defense. If Kemp ran up on them accusing them and starts to reach for a gun, it would be the other guys acting in self-defense even if they shot first (Han Solo vs. Greedo for anyone who's a Star Wars fan).
I'm personally not a gun person and don't plan to be, but would imagine that self-defense is tricky without knowing what led up to the shooting, and in this case the article says that the video evidence "appeared to contradict Kemp's account of the events in question." Makes me think he was actually the aggressor and perhaps the others are the ones acting in self-defense.
Who knows, but I imagine they have it pretty solid if he pled guilty.
Could have died, could have killed someone else, and is now facing jail-time, all over a stolen iPhone. Just total nonsense.
Well, he did not plead guilty to original charges, but instead only to a lesser second degree assault charge. So the prosecutor also caved to a degree.
Sounds like a pragmatic compromise to end this for both sides. I’m guessing he’ll get lenient sentencing.
I tend to agree with a lot of this. If you hunt people down who are known criminals and approach them instead of calling the cops and then approach them it’s hard to say self defense, sounds more like an anticipated get out of jail card to me. I don’t see connecting the dots on being the aggressor and claiming to be the victim.
I remember seeing Kemp on campus, which to me was like saying you had a class with Ashley Judd.

Apparently someone stole his iPhone, he tracked it to a mall, got in an altercation about it and shot at some guys out of his car window. Claimed self defense but a video showed otherwise.
I agree it’s dumb to have to take action over a stolen iPhone but if you found the people who took it you may not know they are hardened criminals. Also he may have asked for it back and they started a fight where a weapon was drawn and in that case he’s absolutely within his rights to protect himself.

At the time seeing Kemp who had signed with UK to go along with another McDonald's All-American in this game Chris Mills to go along with returning players like Rex Chapman, Eric Manuel & LeRon Ellis. This dunk by Kemp had the UK fans salivating at what the future looked like. And then it all fell apart.

What are the gun laws in Washington state? We have open carry in Arkansas and stand your ground. Shooting inside a Mall is dangerous with bystanders around. I’d be hesitant drawing inside a Mall unless they were charging me at close distance. But I hear what you’re saying. Glad you carry.
Gun laws are extremely restrictive in liberal Washington. Definitely in the top 10 of worst states for firearms.

Hmmm idk if he can claim self defense if he went to the person. Both a prosecutor and a defense attorney have good arguments. But yeah I kinda lean with the prosecution on this one.
Kemp stealing from someone else gets no punishment but someone stealing something from him leads to him going to jail. Oh the irony.
Ah… Shawn Kemp… what could have been. I remember hearing he was going to be so good when he was coming to Kentucky. But in those days you really didn’t have any context for such expectations. No mix tapes, YouTube videos, or televised HS games. It wasn’t until he landed in the NBA that it became obvious he would have been an absolute beast at UK.
Much of the point of being wealthy is to pay someone to do the dirty work.
