But the excitement and interest in UK football and basketball is gone for me. All I read and hear about is NIL and Huge amounts of money for players. I can't get excited about who we are offering to pay life changing money too to play COLLEGE basketball or football. The real excitement is gone now. I really don't understand how all of this works - I say that because how do you keep team harmony and unity when you pay one guy $3 million dollars and another $50,000 and expect everyone to be happy and content. How do you build a team when everyone bolts after the season for more money? Professional sports has and never will be my thing. I loved my college alma mater teams - but thats not who they are any more. They are paid professional athletes who are playing for the highest bidder and as I said leave after the season. That's not college sports - it is pure professional sports now.
With this info I know that UK will never have a championship football team again - the biggest reason will be money. Its professional and we will not have the money. We may compete in basketball - but without a level playing field - I doubt we will win another championship. It's going to be the John Wooden UCLA era all over again. Wouldn't surprise me to see Duke win 6 of the next 10 NCAA Basketball championships because of money. Is that fun for everyone else?
The bottom line for me is this - I will watch the games on TV. I will go to some football games because it is a time to enjoy time with my college friendships. But I'm not going to get really upset when we lose - because I know that the game was not played with players who wanted to represent our University - but with players who wanted to only make money. I don't blame the players - it is capitalism - but it's something that I am not going to waste money on myself!
However, ..............I will still say................ Go Big Blue!
