Flooding in Eastern Kentucky

Harlan here. It was rough but not as bad as other places.

Not sure how it was in Harlan but I’m from Pikeville and the water was over the bridge that connects Walmart to US23, which means the Big Sandy overflowed in that area. I hear everything at Coal Run on one side of the highway was flooded. One aunt had two feet of water in her house, but thankfully all the others seemed to be fine.

Yeah. That bottom with Walmart flooded and apparently the water briefly got over the bridge connecting 23 to the shopping area there with BW3, Gattis, Walmart, and the other stuff.

I live in Harlan, and overall we were pretty fortunate. Could have been a lot worse

I live in Owsley county and we didn't get it as bad as Jackson or Beattyville. Resident's in Beattyville just got their businesses and homes built back from the last flood only to lose it again 😟

My buddy in Pikeville said it's really bad he hasn't had power for awhile. A lot of the roads flooded.

I've never seen the water get that high in my life in Pikeville. South Williamson near Belfry High School got it bad also. Lot's of people without power and water currently. Bad times! Snow coming middle of the week!

How do you mean? It’s nature and geography. These are valleys surrounded by large hills. All the rainwater has to go somewhere. It all gets concentrated at the river, which is where people live, because everything else is a hillside.

Just life living in the hills.. Pikeville had most rain they've gotten since 1977.. Williamson WV just over few hills got the most they'd had since the 50s I think they said.. Hazards was biggest one since 1984 and 7th biggest ever.. Prestonsburg crested at about 44',, all time record was 48'.. Paintsville was looking at about 51'.. All that pikeville water goes to Prestonsburg then paintsville then towards Ashland.. For the most part big rains miss the mountains because they break up the storms or weaken.. But every so often storms roll in wide open,, then just slows down over top of the areas..

I live in Todd County…45 miles west of Bowling Green, 16 mile east of Hopkinsville. About 15 miles north of Clarksville Tn and Ft Campbell. 6 and a hal inches plus about three inches snow on Sunday morning. Had a five foot lake blocking my road. Neighboring town of Guthrie had water rescues. Some prediction of up to 9 inches snow this week.
