Five-star recruit to visit UNC, didn’t make it to UK

Five-star shooting guard Rawle Alkins will take an unofficial visit to North Carolina on Friday night for that program’s midnight madness festivities.

Alkins — a 6-foot-4 prospect from Brooklyn, N.Y. — tried to set up an official visit to Kentucky last weekend for Big Blue Madness, but that trip did not happen.

Alkins’ cousin, Rodney Labossiere, told the Herald-Leader that he attempted to contact UK’s coaching staff about arranging the visit early last week, but didn’t hear back until Thursday — the day before Madness — and plans for the trip fell through.

Word out of UK indicated that the program wanted a smaller group of players on official visits for this year’s Big Blue Madness in order to spend more time with each recruit.

Last year, UK commitment Charles Matthews was joined by five high-profile visitors from the senior class: Carlton Bragg, Jaylen Brown, Brandon Ingram, Malik Newman and Stephen Zimmerman. None of those players ended up committing to Kentucky.

This year, UK commitment Sacha Killeya-Jones was joined by just three seniors on their official visits: De’Aaron Fox, Harry Giles and Malik Monk. UK is widely considered the favorite for Fox, and Giles and Monk had visited Lexington previously in their recruitments.

It’s possible that Alkins — now playing for Word of God Academy in Raleigh, N.C. — could take an official visit to UK later in his recruitment. Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 9 overall prospect in the class of 2016.

They aren't. Read that again.
Yep. He had me cautiously excited, although I knew the info was coming from a UK source (so grain of salt). But the article didn't say UK was the favorite for Giles, it said UK was the favorite for Fox, and that Giles and Monk have made multiple visits.

I think Alkins is out. I'm betting his AAU people (Adidas) are pushing him away from UK, and I know he ended up at Word of God Academy in North Carolina. That's where John Wall and CJ Leslie came from. UK obviously got Wall, but looking back on his recruitment, some of the WOG people were seen as a hindrance. Wall was a case where he was determined to play for Cal, and everything else was secondary. I don't think Alkins is like that, as UK came in pretty late on him.

Almost sounds like UK isn't really even spinning their wheel with Alkins, which makes me feel even better about Monk.

Fine by me. Alkins is a solid player, but Monk is better and personally, that whole "committing" to Buffalo or wherever it was rubbed me the wrong way.

You don't try to make last minute arrangements to come to UK a few days before BBM. He thinks we're Wichita State or something? That ship has sailed.

Reading the tea Ieaves, it has has been obvious for several months that Calipari will sign Fox and Monk. It's an open secret. This is why Markelle Fultz, Kobi Simmons, and now Rawle Alkins have shifted their interest toward other programs. Although Monk hasn't said anything publicly to tip his hand, his brother Marcus has been on the radio in Arkansas, explaining why people should respect Malik for making the decision that is best for his career. We don't know what Malik has said privately to other recruits, but Alkins seems to have gotten the message. The class will be Fox, Monk, Wynyard, Gabriel, Killeya-Jones, plus 1 more big from among Adebayo, Giles, Allen. I don' t think Bolden, Simmons, or Alkins are out of the question yet, but it would take a major change of heart by some players clearly headed our way now.

I hope Monk is in a good position; Alkins is no chump and would be a nice pick up.

That being said, I believe we have a great shot Monk.

Even with the supposed drama surrounding his recruitment, I'd like to see Kentucky stay in touch with Alkins in case something falls through with other targets.
