This is a very simple play and is run by high schools and middle schools. So, Petrino is not some genious but he probed and found a very weak spot in the UK defense and did not let up. He ran this only to the weak side because Jason Hatcher ate it up every time it came his way. However, our weak side DE was less disciplined and caused some problems. (however, even when the WDE executed his assignment the ILBs failed on theirs allowing Radcliff to gain more yards than he should have)
There is a drill defensive coaches do called the 'do your job drill'. In that drill the DC will set up scenarios where a defender will be tempted to go rouge and go out of his assigment to make a play. Well Petrino got a good look at our WDE on the 2nd series when he came down the line and made a tackle on the opposite side of the center. Fans are cheering good play, but the OC now knows he has a rogue DE he can put some candy in font of and draw him away.
Rant over, the guts of the play. offensive left side is going to block down and the left tackle will work up to the lb on his side. The end man on the line of scrimmage for the defense is being read. He has been taught that if the tackle down blocks he needs to squeeze down the line of scrimmage to close the gap. He needs to be looking for a kickout block coming his way and he has to contain any outside run. The linebacker has the B gap and the other ILB has Backside B or A depending on the call.
Below is a clip of the play. (they have inseted a tight end so the OLB has contain on this play but the run is into the C gap where the WDE should be. Insteade he is chasing down the RB again.) The safety has the alley and he was watching the running back as well and allowed the QB more yards.
The next clip is the next play. same play. This time the WDE holds his gap and out ILB is out of positon and executed run fit to the wrong gap and the RB scored.
Here is another. same mistake.
I add this final one to show that defense is a team job. Here the play is well defended, we get the ball out of #8 hands and our other ILB is playing pass and does not execue a run fit at all.
If we had another player similar to Hatcher to insert on the weak side we are in business. No way #8 beats anyone throwing the football. But, you can't allow him free untouched runs. He is wayyyyy tooooo fast.
