Few notes on the newly released spring roster (there may be more, but these are a few that stood out). In addition, the positions probably are not all that accurate b/c Stoops specifically mentioned Austin Dotson competing for Stenberg OG position, but he's listed as an OT on the roster. The only roster I've seen thus far was per Nick Roush over at KSR...don't think it's ok with board rules to link it, but I wanted to give credit where it's due.
  • DB
    • CB
      • Cedric Dort 5'11 183- will be 7 (channeling his inner Mike Edwards)
      • #1 — CB Kelvin Joseph.... 6'1 197
    • S
      • Moses Douglass 6'2 197 - has lost 5-10 pounds since 2019 roster, so that rules out any question I had about his bulking up to move to WLB
  • LB
    • Jared Casey - listed as ILB instead of OLB. Also, he is the same size as Davis and Oats at 6'3 232 (Davis is listed at 6'4 232)
    • #13 OLB JJ Weaver 6'5 244
    • OLB Boogie Watson 6'3 248 (up slightly from 2019 season - would've liked to have seen him more like 255 or so)
    • #91 OLB Sam Anaele 6'4 246 - already same size as Boogie and Weaver as an incoming FR
    • ILB Marquez Bembry 6'3 223
  • DLINE - I thought this was interesting as it gives at least an initial depth chart projection for the guys with hands in the dirt. Legit 3 deep at each position not even including early enrollee Oxendine.
    • DL (unspecified position per roster)
      • Davoan Hawkins 6'2 282 (seems like he was playing DE last year)
    • NG
      • Marquan McCall 6'3 369 - would REALLY like to see him drop to about 340 or so
      • Cavon Butler 6'3 310 - interesting he is NOT listed as DT but NG
      • Quinton Bohanna 6'4 367
    • DE
      • Josh Paschal 6'3 274 (would be surprised if he's less than 285 or so by the beginning of the season)
      • Isaiah Gibson 6'3 290
      • Kordell Looney 6'3 290
    • DT
      • Phil Hoskins 6'5 310
      • Qua Mahone 6'3 306
      • Octavius Oxendine 6'1 313
      • AAF 6'6 285
  • OLINE
    • OG
      • Kenneth Horsey 6'3 295 instead of 6'3 307
      • Eli Cox 6'4 304
      • Luke Fortner 6'6 305 -- once again, like Dotson, listed at OT even though he is the returning starter at OG
    • OT
      • Landon Young 6'7 321 -- that kid is a HOSS!
      • Darian Kinnard 6'5 347 -- see note above L. Young
      • Nick Lewis 6'9 343 -- GOOD weight loss (down from 367 lbs on the 2019 roster), will be interesting to see his development
      • Jake Pope 6'7 297 - nice and long, just needs to bulk up a bit
      • Austin Dotson 6'6 330 (although as stated above, I think he will mainly be at OG to compete for Stenberg's spot)
      • #56 Deondre Buford..... 6'3 265
    • OC
      • Q Wilson 6'1 309 (up from 290 per the 2019 roster)

Newcomers' numbers
  • 1 — CB Kelvin Joseph.... 6'1 197
  • 2 — QB Joey Gatewood..... 6'4 240
  • 8 — DT Octavious Oxendine.... 6'1 313 (really wish he would've chosen #7 instead)
  • 11 — QB Beau Allen......6'2 209
  • 14 — WR Kalil Branham..... 6'1 201
  • 23 — RB JuTahn McClain.... 5'9 178
  • 25 — DB Andru Phillips........ 5'11 178
  • 27 — DB Joel Williams......... 6'1 200
  • 56 — LB D’Eryk Jackson...... 6'1 249 (dude is a THUMPER, will likely need to shed 10 pounds or more to be able to play in space)
  • 56 — OT Deondre Buford..... 6'3 265
  • 71 — OT John Young......... 6'6 295
  • 91 — OLB Sam Anaele....... 6'4 246

295 seems low for a guy competing for a starting guard spot(talking about Horsey). Those guys are usually at least 300. But if it works for him then it works for him

Great post, UKSanders

I think Horsey said it was a matter of losing weight first (he's down from 340) so he could put good weight back on.

He said he's trying to put some weight back on by the end of the spring, so I'd guess he will eventually get back up to 315 or so.

Great info. Thx!

Buford listed at 6'3" is disappointing. Won't stick at OT here if that is accurate.

The opening had him measure at 6' 4". So it's probably accurate. Every measuring stick is a bit different than the other, so they probably rounded up. That's too short for tackle at either side, at least in my tast . Maybe he'll move down to a center or become a fasta** guard. I wouldn't worry too much, we've got some LONG fellas that are young. I would like us to go after the 6' 8" 275 LT up at Detroit Country Day. Dude is an absolute mauler and is FAST. plays DE as well.

Not seen an iota of Peters but Boogie is solid as she comes at SLB. JJ Weaver was very eye opening good in limited snaps for a true FR. Jordan Wright needs to add buik and power for sure but his length and frame is very impressive for such an athlete.

Peters needs to get is act together for sure....but I'm not losing sleep if he can't do normal expectations (and sounds like Stoops isn't either).

Not necessarily true. If he has long arms to go with supreme athleticism he will be fine.
Yep, other than longer arms never understood any other way height was an advangtage. Landon and Darian have long arms but are also great athletes. But a shorter guy with long arms that is also a great athlete shoud be able to do the same.

Height is an issue because of leverage. You want dudes that can get low, but if they're able to do that while also being 6' 5" plus, they're almost impossible to out leverage. Having some height on you can give you a MASSIVE advantage, because you don't have to be AS technically sound like Drake Jackson does. Drake's height is a bit of a disadvantage, but not exposed as much because of his near perfect technical work and he plays center. He plays just like Jason Kelce.

TLDR; You can play tackle at 6' 3". Just don't be surprised when he gets out lengthed and leveraged by a 6' 5" defensive end in the SEC. Because that's what tackles at the Sun Belt and FCS level play at.
