Eli Brown to burn RS?

As thin as we are at LB I figured this would happen. I hate it that they would need to but we don't really have a choice.

I have mixed feeling about this development. I am all in for him playing if his knee is really ready for him to play and this is not just an act of desperation by the coaching staff.

The kid seems to be still slight and light for the LB position he will be playing. He is more safety size than LB size. If this kid isn't projected to be of real help why not just move one of the bigger safeties to LB and go on and redshirt him. McWilson is bigger than him.

I hope that he has a great year playing but if he is just going to get minimum playing time and is likely to reinjure that knee lets redshirt him and get him really ready.

I was hoping to see him redshirt, but I will trust Stoops on this one. I've heard nothing but good things about him from the practice reports.

I wonder if that puts the redshirt back on Jordan Jones. Missing two or more weeks at the end of camp has to hurt his chances to play.

Interesting way to phrase it. This is not Jimmy Haley playing two plays against UT in the final game of the season. That was "burning" a RS.

KSR quoted Elliott as saying he has put on 10-15 lbs of muscle and they aren't worried about that.

Also said he plays physical and was getting in the hole making plays at practice yesterday.

Exactly...they will still be able to use a RS for injury if need be in a future year. Still will have 4 years to play 3 (after this season)

Having Hatcher suspended and Kobie Walker will be out for the first 3-4 games so we need guys to step in and play. It was Brown's decision to play Stoops has just agreed to give him a chance to see if he can contribute. I don't know what his weight is right now but if he can get himself around 215-220 lbs he'll be fine at the Will position. Ideally you'd like him to be closer to 230 lbs but we need our best athletes out there. This is a big year for us we need all hands on deck if that's what it takes to keep the win column moving in the right direction

Right. Cant "pull a redshirt" before the seasons even started. A little bit of clickbait I guess.

I am guessing that unless this illness is something lingering that will keep his strength and stamina down that both will play. LB is a need position and you can always use LBs on special teams cover teams.

I got to thinking and looked at the depth chart and they already are playing a couple of players Browns size which I think is in the 210-215 range in Kobie Walker and Jordan Jones

If the team physician didn't feel Brown's knee was fine, he wouldn't be practicing in contact drills (which he obviously is).

In a perfect world, every freshman would redshirt. UK football is not close to being that perfect world.

Stoops is anything but stupid. I am quite confident that he will do his best to keep from putting Brown in a game this year. But if it's necessary, well then it's necessary.

The only reason Brown is playing is that illnesses and injuries have decimated our linebackers this month. Brown has practiced well. But let's not kid ourselves. He needs to gain weight. His development would be better off with a redshirt. If it weren't for all the injuries, Brown would be redshirting. If Khalid Henderson was a better alternative, Brown would be redshirting.

Stoops redshirt 18 kids from the number 17 ranked class for a team that was one win away from a bowl game last year.

Don't begin to think he takes using a freshman lightly.

I hate this development too but it's just bad luck all around concerning the LB's
Hatcher suspended two games
K Walker not back up to speed after off season surgery
Flannigan gets a shoulder and is day to day
Jones comes down with an illness and out a couple of weeks

Leaving 4 healthy bodies combined for the Will and Sam positions; Henderson, Brown and Ware, Allen. If all were available Brown and Allen would be 4th team and red shirting.

Brown is a four star and very talented. I agree in the best of all worlds that he would redshirt. Evidently however he is going to be needed this year.

I am somewhat puzzled that Firos and Hendrix are not getting more mention with the injury woes at LB. Why are they not getting more looks instead of the two Freshman LBs? I am hoping this doesn't mean they are going to be disappointments

Those medical redshirts are as easy to get as they use to be. When Bama started having more medical redshirts than the other 13 teams combined the SEC declared all medical redshirts had to be approved by the SEC office and then the NCAA. Which basically meant that Bama will still get several but the rest of you don't count on getting very many.

Not talking about medical RS. They would just use normal RS if injured.

I've never understood the big deal about not redshirting. If there is a spot and the kid is good enough to contribute than play him. Both Urban Meyer and Saban have both said they prefer to play kids if they are ready to contribute.

I agree with playing them if they are physical ready to compete. I do hate seeing players that are not physically ready thrown to the wolves where the chance of a bad injury is high.

From an athlete perspective I agree. There is also the academic side in that the redshirt basically gives you five years to complete your degree. As I told my son however, life is about adjusting to wrenches thrown into your plans and being overly prepared when possible for anything. Currently he is slotted to back up Jabari and he has to be ready if called upon.

When I met Eli my initial reaction was that he needed some size to compliment great LB instincts, toughness and athleticism. I believe Korem and staff do a great job with getting kids ready physically and he will play the Will. One of the biggest issues now would be remembering the coverages!!!

Parabolicsecan - the academic side is something I should have mentioned. Obviously that is an important part too. Are you Josh Allen's dad by the way?

Speaking of Daniel, sounds like hes also playing well enough already to play this year. If you loom at what the redshirt year did for Denzil Wares body, i wish guys like Daniel and Brown could follow suit, but if wr need em and theyre ready, then get going.

Sucks becuase the LB unit was really the biggest spot where camp injuries would uirt the most and of course...... Really angers ypu that Hatcher was selfish and got himself on trouble again. Youre already seeing the effects its having on the team.

This will hurt at the beginning of the season but may actually help with depth toward the end of the season. Would rather See Him RS but we don't have great depth yet.

Firios and Hendrix are backing up Forrest. They were talking about other LB spots.

KG's situation is still fluid, Coach Eliot said he is still playing two positions (some DE as well behind Faro and Dubose). He and Alvonte are battling it out for the spot behind Jabari. Sound's like Flannigan's injury is day to day suggesting he will return soon and that Henderson may run with the twos upon his return. Hate to see Brown lose that RS if he eventually ends up on the third team.

Brown was a top 100 player at one point, knee injury probably hurt his rankings a bit and all the instate focus was on Damien Harris but any other year Brown would be a hot name that many would expect to play as a freshman. He is on the small side currently, but in the world of offenses that spread you out I dont see that as a bad thing as long as he has the speed to go with it (and from all reports he does). I wouldnt expect to see him on the goaline trying to stop somebody but have no doubt he will be a valuable contributor.
