Either Dawson doesn't like to throw short or he has no confidence

in Towles to be effective with those passes. Dear Shannon-this isn't the Big 12. You need to give us a chance to win Running up the gut on SEC defenses will only make you age prematurely. It seldom works inside the 10. I can't believe how badly he called that game. And yeah, I know there were plenty of failures to execute.

Need to have a quarterback able to throw short. Towles has no touch on throws save for deep balls.

Some deep balls. Many are errant.

Those are the only ones he really shows any on. I didn't mean every one, of course. The first game showed that where he missed guys constantly deep.

It would be interesting to see what Dawson would call if there wasn't any weak links . I think he's constrained by the limitations in personnel , the playbook gets small when you can't execute throws , blocks or catch . With Towles you either throw deep , run it or call a screen because he lacks the ability to reliably throw intermediate routes .

I posted last week that the playcalling indicated the staff didnt have confidence in Towles. Tonight dispels any doubt. And who can blame them with what hes showing. 8 completions. 8!

No doubt.

I read somewhere that Dawson did not call the plays at WVU. Is this true?

Between last year and this year, I am under the distinct impression that the staff doesn't trust Towles to make throws over the middle. I'm not sure I blame them; I haven't seen a lot to suggest PT can make the required reads (and throws) to keep from turning the ball over.

first and goal from the two and we settle for field goal..Should have had Towles fake a handoff into the middle and run around one of the ends for the score. when was the last time we went six quarters without a TD? Barker needs to be give a chance next week no matter what happens..Towles is too inaccurate to be a big time starting QB.

When we had the ball on the two, I thought of Derrick Ramsey. We had the defense jamming the run at that point. Why not fake the run, then bootleg the other direction? I think their end was pinching hard on the inside and would have been caught off guard enough that we could have picked up two yards

I think that was what was reported.

I dont really have a problem with Dawson's playcalling. He has a great feel for when to pop draws and screens, and when to go deep. Right now, the problem is the execution. It doesnt matter what he calls, because its not going to work. Call a pass? Our QB cant execute. Call a run? Defenders are all flying upfield/run blitzing because they dont respect the pass.

We're in a tough spot. And it wont change until QB play gets better.

Nine players in the box and you call a run up the middle?
We have no idea how much PT can change the play. Doesn't look like much to me. What about the TE's?
If you won't allow him to change plays, run if available to him, or receivers can't make the big catches, I don't care who is QB.

GO CATS

I don't think they have the confidence that Patrick can make the throw in the middle if the field or with little space.

There is plenty of blame to go around for last night's loss (WR drops, horrid O-Line, bad play-calling, etc.), but to me a QB change needs to happen. If Towles isn't trusted to pass the ball, then why not try Barker? I've always been a fan of Towles, he has all the tools but doesn't have it mentally and I don't think he ever will. I think we should try Barker next week and maybe with him, our play-calling can get a little more diverse.

It's also interesting that I've always heard Phillips is our most accurate passer.....So Towles may not even be as accurate as Barker or Phillips.

would like to see the running backs coming out of the backfield to make catches in open space as well. Couch did that a lot under Mumme

I have been sating this about Towles since I saw him in high school thrower not a passer. been say KY will never do anything with him at QB don't know if Barker is the answer but Towles is not

Agree that Dawson just doesn't have a lot of faith in PT. someone recently posted an interview Dawson gave over the summer where he said essentially accuracy is the only QB trait that matters (paraphrase). Also said accuracy is something that can't be taught or developed, you have it or you don't. Not really encouraging for someone with Towles' skill set.

If the coaches have seen the same things I've watched in practice/games, then it's most likely a complete lack of confidence in Towles on the short throws. Way to often those attempts have been a "pick 6" waiting to happen. Quick slants have been especially cringe worthy.

Maybe that's why our TEs don't go out for passes because PT can't complete them. Who knows?

No doubt.

Not true. Dawson made calls and even set the game plan. He just didn't have final say. It's kind of like how Stoops still heavily influences the defense but DJ is the DC and is setting the game plan.
