I agree, it would be nice to have it, but here's the thing. You have to spend a lot of time practicing a zone for it to be effective. And time practicing the zone is time taken away from practicing man-to-man.We suck at zone, he’s already said he can’t teach it, every time we have played it we get a couple stops but it constantly breaks down. I agree it would be nice to have in the bag but I don’t see him devoting any time to teaching it. Even if we have to hire a zone specialist, it would help learning to attack it because we always have trouble attacking a zone on offense too.
And the man-to-man Cal runs is complex. There's lots of switching, to the point that sometimes it actually looks like a match-up zone. And we've seen in early games times where the man-to-man broke down because one guy switched but not the other, and then you get somebody with a wide-open path to the basket. Happened with Grady against Duke.
If you want us to have two really mediocre defensive schemes, by all means spend time practicing a zone. I'd rather they continue to work on the man D so that it's working well by the time the SEC schedule starts.
Generally, the teams that rely on zone are overmatched in size and athleticism for most of the season, so they spend a lot of time on it.
