Duke game in 1998

Scott-Padgett-Kentucky-Wildcats.jpg

To that guy on his knees (who prior to this had never lost a Regional Final game)...that's what happens when you burn up all your timeouts too early :p

Padgett's 3 was the greatest single sports high I've ever experienced in my life. Pure, unadulterated euphoria. Couldn't even figure out what to do with myself.

absolutely the case for me. nothing else even comes close

my brother, my dad and i were jumping up and down and i think my head grazed the ceiling

i was scared shitless when avery went into that shot. i thought it might bank in

What I remember about being at the game was their was about 38,000 fans there,.22,000 UK fans 8,000 Duke fans and everyone left was pulling for Duike. You could HEAR the Cat fans.

Padgett and Mills both hit huge threes. Which one put us up finally and which one gave us the four point lead?

Completely missed the game. Traveling on a business trip on a Sunday. Short layover in Pittsburg. Caught the halftime score. Completely deflated during the final leg of my trip. Arrived in New York and found out we won. Complete euphoria with nobody to celebrate with.

Was there in the Thunder Dome I believe they called it then. Had great seats too. Well at 10 min remaining & 17 points down my head was in hands. At 9:30 to go it began... You could feel it coming. Hearts were pounding. At 5 min left noticed Coach K had no timeouts left. Writing was on the wall then I felt. There on out Cats controlled the tempo play by play it seemed. Turners burner was on! Wojo's jock was laying on the court. Cats were running on all cylinders. Tubby coached an excellent game. No way that last shot was going in! Buzzer!!!! Place went absolutely nuts. Duke fans slowly walked out hanging their heads. Cat fans were lighting cigars standing by their seats with real big grins! Off to an beachside joint for oysters & beer. I still have my UK hat I wore for that game as well as at the F4 games in San Antone. Didn't mean to babble but brought back treasured memories. A step down The Glory Road!

It's not so much that they were Kentucky born(though that didn't hurt). It was the fact that these were the guys who stuck around through probation, didn't have all that much God-given talent but played with 150% heart and they were oh-so-close to a Final Four. It's worth obsessing over.

This is correct

Mills was with about 2 minutes left and it gave us a 1-point lead, which we promptly lost again but it was awesome because it was the first lead after being down 19. Padgett's shot was with about 40 seconds and we were tied, putting us up 3 and sealing Shushefskee and Wojahowskee's fates.

Got it. So then Turner got a rebound, got fouled, made one, then they came down and made a prayer three, Turner got the ball, got fouled and made one to finish the scoring.

As already noted we played much better D on that play than the one in '92. That was basically just a 15 foot jump shot by a guy who didn't miss that night. In '98 Avery had to take a much more difficult shot. I was confident it wasn't going in. I really don't remember sweating it much other than it was a close game at the end. One of Tubby's better coaching moments was realizing K didn't have any more TO's, and not calling any himself. If they'd been able to call a couple late it could have very well changed the result.

Agreed...That was huge!

[laughing] "Krzyzewski wants to call a timeout- he doesn't any timeouts!" -Billy Packer

Funny thing about it was- the player of the game Sheppard (18 pts) was pretty much the only guy who didn't contribute in that furious comeback. Turner abused Wojo. Padgett and Mills hit big shots. Edwards made some huge plays. Evans was an animal.

What's funny here is Padgett shoves Magloire off Wojo, Padgett really was underrated as a leader.

not much made of it but near the end when jeff shepherd shot his first free throw and the ref handed the ball back to jeff, Ratface called a timeout. shouldnt that have been a technical?

Okay.... during that game with 4 or 5 seconds to go... what was your feeling before Avery missed that shot. Were you sensing deja vu? Or did you say "Not this time. We've learned our lesson."

I was there on the front row, mid court. I'd been listening to Mrs. Ratface chirping the whole time Duke was ahead. As soon as Avery missed the shot, I turned around and she was gone. Although I was nervous, Avery never really got a good look. One of the greatest comebacks in UK history.

on the final free throws by edwards krzyzewski was permitted to make a substitution after edwards already had the ball and was about to go into his routine. it was a de facto mini-time out

i'm not sure if you mean the intentional free throws after mcleod forearmed shep in the throat

i watched this again last night. it's really incredible that they gave that stiff wojo the national dpoy award. it's pretty clear he has no business being on the floor

once uk starts their run duke continues to take early-clock contested shots. not much of an effort to get brand post touches. typical krzyzewski panic as a game gets away from him

I live in St Pete and had a bunch of cousins and uncles in town for game. They were all heading home after the game.My wife and step mother didn't go and watched on TV,at half time my wife said my stepmother looked at her and said it's going to be a long ride back to Kentucky. The game ended and she said the ride got a lot shorter.
I'm here to tell ya, that was one heck of a party driving up I-75 from Florida, over Jellico Mountain and into the Bluegrass.

Coach K unmasterfully ran himself out of timeouts early in the second half and couldn't do anything to stop the onslaught comeback.

last time out was called by mcleod in a loose ball situation when uk had the arrow, and mcleod looked to be tied up

uk players were very upset the TO was given but it worked out in the end

I was there in the portable bleachers. The swing of emotions was Euphoria!! Once Tubby went small, Turner destroyed Dook while Mills and Padgett finished them off.

I was there in St Pete for that regional also, with my son. We originally had seats way up in the rafters but UCLA returned some tix and we got tickets in those portable bleachers you speak of. When Uk started the comeback and as the game got closer I swear I thought those bleachers were going to collapse. Good times.

I can only recall twice as an adult getting on my knees praying on a outcome of a game. This one (FF in SA and I lived in Austin) and the '05 game with Cincy(Regionals in Austin).

That doesn't make sense, isn't St. Pete much closer to Durham than Lexington, and thus it'd be easier for the Duke fans to get there? I mean they bounce around like a bunch of idiots at Cameron...surely their fans would be more dedicated than that?

It sure looks like WoJo was trying to get Magliore thrown out...he was the one hanging on not Magliore trying to hold him very obvious.

i'm glad he took the shot from half court. off balance or whatever, shep was all over it yeah, but avery had time to get it to the near court for a higher % shot. there was still time when he let the shot go. no i didn't think it was going in, but waited to celebrate anyway. just making sure they were out of miracles.

padgett's shot gave us the final margin we needed. but to me the mill's shot was the shot of the game, and if not for bryce drew, the shot of the tournament. the whole second half was leading to that moment, and i believe when he hit that the game, psychologically speaking, was won. deep down you knew we were going to win when it went in.
