Duece Hogan Transfer To Kentucky (From Iowa Perspective)

Lots of kids in high school come in with tons of accolaids and don't produce. Iowa has had two 5* OL recruited in the past 15 years and both proved total busts. It happens.

What I'm saying in my original post, I guess I didn't say it unless you read between the lines, you're getting a QB who has played enough snaps in his first two years of college to count on 2 hands. He was unable to beat out two pretty below average Power 5 QBs who ran ahead of him on the depth chart, and when he announced he was leaving Iowa may have actually been #4 on the QB depth chart.

I do hope though Duece can see the field at UK at some point.

I wouldn't start making plans for a serious run to the CFP as your QB.
Sometimes it's all about how a QB is being used. Square pegs may not work in round holes. Our very own Tim Couch was being used as an option QB under Bill Curry. If I remember correctly Tim said it's either him or the coach and the coach was fired. Once Tim was in the scheme that matched his skill set, he exploded. You just never know.

Watching his HUDL videos I see a good but not great arm. I also see good touch. He seemed to run pretty well as well. It's possible the game is just to fast for him at this level but the basic tools are there. Should prove interesting to see what happens.

I watched Iowa’s QB. They have no idea what a QB looks like or how to evaluate or develop.
Bingo, been a Hawk fan for 40 years. Just because he didn't play means nothing. Kirk is loyal to a fault, once you are in its very hard to unseat you.
Get in Kirk's doghouse you won't see the field.
We have only seen him play a few snaps, 1-1 in passing. Lol
If Bennett transferred to Iowa from Georgia he would be behind Petras next year and ride the pine. Lol
Seems ridiculous I know , but I'm not kidding.
Hope the kid does great for you guys.
Ferentz is consistently one of the worst O coaches in the FBS.

Thanks sosa. Means a lot. You guys make it easy to come to this board. I truly now will always be rooting for Kentucky every weekend-- I really will. Was awesome our teams got paired in the bowl game and allowed us fans to exchange on here in advance.
We are the ultimate underdog in football. Nobody ever gives us a chance. We beat ul by 100 the last 2 meetings and they were favored over us this year. We beat them like hell again. I'll bet people pick them to win next year even though they still won't match up with us on the lines at all.

Couple thoughts, after a few beers.....

- Mucho respect for @rucker4 . Please post here any time. I enjoy your takes. I'm a diehard Kentucky Wildcats fan first. Follow SEC and Big XII football religiously. I HATE UTexas Longhorns even though my wife is a 5th generation Texan, is a hardcore Horns fan and her dad sold Cokes to Longhorn fans back during the early 1950s when he was a kid. Always respected Hawkeye football. Congrats to you guys on a fine season. I'll pull more for Iowa in Big 10 EXCEPT when they face Nebraska.

- Deuce Hogan transfer. I wonder if this young man realizes the impact of out-of-state tuition fees? Do Cats football walk-ons receive instate tuition waivers from UK? Was this an impulsive decision based on HC remarks? We're happy to have him, but timing appears suspect to me. Couple QBs already ahead of him on the roster. Hogan may have realized more PT by signing with Huskers, Kansas or maybe a Texas P5 school like Texas Tech.

Unless the rules have changed recently without my knowledge, they have to pay out of state tuition which is why getting an out of state walk on, other than the son of a football Hal of Famer like R. Lewis, is extremely rare. And I'm absolutely sure he and his family were made fully aware of that. The family is from Texas, isn't everyone there rich? 😄

Nebraska isn't exactly a QB friendly offense and the weather they play in doesn't enhance the passing game, Texas Tech is obviously a team that passes the ball a lot though.
This is Levis final year and I don't think Allen is a lock to succeed him. I see pretty much an open competition for QB 2023 and Hogan has a chance to compete and win the spot IMO.

Everybody except me. 😁

Seriously, I paid instate tuition both times I attended college at KY. Out-of-state tuition is killer. My daughter lives just across the border in TN, but received tuition waiver while attending SECC in Middlesboro. *shrugs shoulders*, maybe his parents got bank. Good points, Dee.

Austin, thank you so kindly for the words and I will back on these boards. Just hate to hear you're also a Nebraska fan though :) As you know, we've owned them 7 years in a row now :)

As for Duece's decision to transfer to Kentucky I must assume had zero to do with Ferentz's remarks and some sort of pay back. If he wanted ultimate payback, he would have transferred to a Big 10 school to play against Iowa the next three years vs. to a school Iowa likely won't play again until long after his college career has ended.

Again, the kid boats tremendous confidence as he's not afraid to put his confidence out there in front of all publicly. I don't know the talent in the UK QB room, but apparently he feels he can go there and play.

As I stated in another thread, once Duce reached out to UK or the other way around, no doubt Mark Stoops and Ferentz spoke about Duece and they respect one another enough that if either felt it was a bad move, I'm sure this doesn't happen.

Iowa has 4 quarterbacks and none of them have demonstrated more than average at best ability, why is this? Could it be their staff just isn't getting the job done when it comes to development? It just doesn't make any sense that this kid puts up the kind of number he did in HS but can't make the jump to college football.

When the entire class flunks is it the students or is it the teacher?
I agree. The implication seems to be that Iowa runs a grind it out style of offense, and is not turning out many prolific pro style QBs. Maybe a QB with downfield tools will perform better in a Liam Coen pro style system with encouragement from his new coaches.

Pretty surprising he came here. What are the chances almost any QB can come into the SEC and be a star. In this league you could be a big star in the Big Ten but struggle in this league. He will have so much competition just climbing the ladder any in our program. If he wants SEC football maybe he has some fight in him.
Maybe Hogan has taken encouragement from Will Levis' improvement at Kentucky under Liam Coen.

Levis back but the backup Allen is a very good QB. And Allen is still young. Looked really good the little time he got in game action.

I chuckled at the posters on the Iowa board who seem to think Deuce is going to get well on UK's NIL money. I'm not sure a walk on 3rd string QB is going to hit the jackpot in Lexington. Now a local guy superstar NFL prospect ike Wandale...different story.

Iowa has played two QBs and Duece Hogan never got more than a series or two, in mop up.

Both CJ Beathard and Nate Stanley were on rosters in the NFL, with Beathard having some success. Stanley choice to get impacted by covid-19 protocols and his career was done.

We shall see if next two QBs to be in pipeline bring something, but that may not happen immediately.

The bigger challenge is with OC for the Hawkeyes.

This player will come out of spring as Levis's backup and successor.

I think that's a good possibility. Even if not, imo, this is just more proof that the current offensive staff is not sold on Beau as a starter.

I'd love to see Beau start and succeed here, but I don't see it given the level of talent this staff can get via recruiting and especially the portal. Imo the portal right now is the most impactful due to undoubtedly concerns or negative recruiting about coen's longevity

Nope, Beau will be backup again next year.
He led six drives last year that resulted in 3 touchdowns and one 4th down stop at opponents 1 yard line.
I know he was going against other teams backups, but he was in with our 2nd & 3rd team.
He is a very accurate passer.

GO BIG BLUE!!!

I have my doubts about Beau ever starting but I do not think this move indicates anything like your implying. We just signed a walk on who was 3rd or 4th string QB with the guys in front of him sucking. I would take deuce HS ranking with a big fat grain of salt at this point. Morgan Newton was a big time HS prospect as well and he was awful trying to be a SEC QB.

He is functional. But he has kind of a p shooter for an arm. I'm going to assume going forward the coaches will continue to look for other solutions and then Allen is functional if we don't get anything else.

Thing about Beau is he is having plenty of time to get stronger and more and more keen on playing the position. He was already a very bright QB with an excellent arm, but now you throw in the strength and learning for three years he has a big step up in being ready.

Hogan clearly is confident he can be UKs future QB. To pay his own way there and turn down any other opportunities that may have given him an immediate scholarship speaks volumes to his optimistic side of things at Kentucky.

Hope the kid has great success at UK. Good kid all around.

There is absolutely no reason to think that . You haven’t seen much of Bea Allen and ZERO of this kid . If the staff was as down on Allen as you are , they would have made the quarterback position a priority in this recruiting class . They took this kid as an afterthought because he was walking on . Maybe he will turn out to be great , maybe Allen will never play here , but no one can seriously say that at this point.

Know nothing about the kid, but it's a win for UK. He is a former scholarshipped P5 QB UK is getting for free who at the very least can run the scout team at a decent level and at best can compete and possibly win the starting position down the road.
Well put. I agree. Go CATS!

Agree with your assesment.

No kore reason to believe Allen is not the UK future than reason to believe Hogan is.

Let's not forget, Hogan was unable to unseat not one, but two, woeful QBs ahead of him at Iowa in Petras and Padilla. And at the time he left Iowa, it was said he had dropped to #4 on the depth chart behind a kid who was a true freshman this past year.

With all this said though, a change of scenery for Duece could do wonders-- a new and fresh start. I hope the kid does well.

I still wonder if he won't be tried at S with QB as an emergency.
LOL! The kid said he won’t be lowering his shoulder and blasting defenders like Levis and you suggest the cliche’ of moving a QB to safety. If that does not work, maybe he can play TE. 🤪
