Does Poy have another year?

+1. I had this discussion in another thread and would like to know myself. We were discussing who will enter the draft. I could've sworn this is his last season.

Pretty sure he played in too many games. 30% of regular season games is around 9; I think he played in 9. Besides, he's playing now as a grad student. Not sure if that matters. Good question.

He has battled a lot of really good big men in his career in practice and for playing time.

He is slowed by his injury, missing practice time, but once he gets healthy he will do what he did last year before getting hurt. He was on the way to a great season.

Hopefully, he will get healthy. If he can't at least he is still giving it what he has. Got to give him a little credit.

I have not heard that he applied for a medical redshirt. But if he did, he would be eligible to receive it.

Most recent 2016 NBA Mock Draft Board has Alex Poythress going in top to mid 2nd round draft pick. Most Kids now are heading to the NBA if they are projected to go in 1st or 2nd round of the Draft. Most NBA Mock Draft Boards still have Murray at #5 - #10, and Skal is still in most Top 10 1st round. Most have Poy, Lee,and Ulis in 2nd Round. Ulis is really starting to move up with his last 4-5 games. Briscoe is back in the 1st Round at #26 and most have him at lower 1st round to 2nd Round. We have a possible 5-6 that could go again in the NBA in 2016.

I love Poy; but no, I don't think he returns. I don't think he'll play NBA ball, either - he may declare and see where he ends up. Probably spend a year or two in the D-league - or, if he really wants to play (which I don't think that's what he wants as a career - call it a hunch) he'll go to Europe.

Seriously, I see Alex being a financial advisor, or something similar - probably to his NBA buddies. He'll be able to play for fun in pickup games and actually do what he loves. I wish him the best no matter what he chooses.

I've seen several posts saying that this years draft won't be as strong (I have no idea) if that's true, he needs to go this year.

What about Mary Coury?

Can he do a fifth year?

Poythress is smart. He knows if he plays to his potential at all times he will go in the top of the draft. As everyone knows, the teams with the top picks are the teams that suck. Poy wants to go late in the draft to a good team that has a chance to win big. He'll make his money at free agency.

Like Mashburn, he'll take his first million and turn it into ten million in a few years. Don't project your money hungry poorness onto Poythress. He's above that.

I don't think he would apply for a medical redshirt until he needs it.

So for example if he decided to return next season he would wait until this current season is complete before requesting a redshirt for the 2014-15 season.

At least that's how I think it works, to cut down on the workload by the NCAA.

Pretty sure it is 20 percent or less which would have been 8 last year for Poythress, I remember him sitting out the first 2 with some illness so Lyles started, then I think he only played 6 or 7 games. Should be ok if he wants to come back. I mean why not? The only reason that I see him leaving this year if it's because of draft status and this year he is no first rounder. If he somehow could with next years team coming in then their ya go.

You are a number of years behind in the rule change category. It is 30% and has been for maybe 5 years, if not more.

Here are the rules for a medical redshirt:

Medical Hardship Requirements
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

The answer to this question might lie with his masters program. Is it a two year or one year program?

I know folks like to call Alex a Senior, but he's actually a Junior on court experience wise. As I read Preacher's criteria, Alex and the team certainly have that option. I, for one, do not believe he has fully recovered from the injury. Next year might give him the best shot at the next level, if he actually has a desire for that.

5 years to play 4. Good chance he could come IF he wanted. I think he tries his hand at the NBA. Another year of college just makes him older.

Just went over every box score last year and Poythress only played in 7 games, missed 2-3 cupcakes early, then got hurt right before the unc game and didn't play again. 7 games out of the total 39 counts as him only playing in 18% of the total games played, making him eligible for redshirt.

He will likely leave. There's too many guys in the frontcourt next year once you factor in Bolden (sorry, Kansas fans).

He's had a really good run here and was a pivotal factor to the 2014 runner-up team. Give the guy credit and wish him the best.

That's the thing though - having the desire for it, and I honestly don't think Alex does. I think most of us agree on this. Although he may return to the court it if IS a 2 year masters program, because it would be the expected thing to do.
I will reiterate though ; I really don't think he comes back and I don't think he plays pro ball
But - have been wrong many times before, and will be wrong many times more.

Poythress was thinking about leaving early last year even with his Injury and rehabbing. I believe his dad was wanting him to go on and put his name in the draft last year. Poythress decided to finish rehabbing and playing one more year here at UK before making the move. This year Draft is so weak and if you look at next years draft and with all the talent coming in 2016 just between UK, Duke, Michigan State those 3 schools have almost Fab 5 talent on each roster. All 3 teams are close at Recruiting in 2016 with UK at 1st, Duke, then MSU. There is alot of talent that will be in the 2017 NBA Draft. It would be smart for probably Poythress, Lee, and Ulis leave for the NBA they are now in the 2nd Round of Draft. Ulis has really moved up and if he continues to have 20ppg and 10 assists he could end up going in 1st round. That is why Coach Cal has been pushing Poythress and Lee to play extremely well now with being in the Mid 2nd Round of Draft. Lee has improved and moved up quite a bit in the NBA Mock Draft boards.

Spent all that time looking over every boxscore and still got it wrong?

FYI all you need to do is consult one single webpage to find your answer.

Quite possible. The one thing that makes me most uncertain about his plans is the fact that he is playing this year at all. He either thought it would help his chances or he just really enjoys being a student athlete. No desire is inconsistent with both of those. Otherwise he would have gone pro or just returned to school and studied. It's also possible he is in it for the scholarship. If that's true, Alex will return if he has a year left on his studies.

I honestly have no idea what he'll do. Make me bet, I'll bet he leaves. It would be a bet I wouldn't expect to win. I will say this, if he returns, we stand to have a very deep front line.

and possibly a situation where Alex would shine because he wouldn't have to "do it all"

With you, if I were to asked to bet on it, I'd say he goes.

You are actually off again on the number of games he played and also, as I recall, the percentage isn't based on the total number of games played in a season but the number of games that are scheduled to be played. I think they only count the SEC and NCAA tournaments as one game each. I could be wrong about that one if the rule has changed and I missed the updated rule.
