Yeah a coach who was an nba winner and took an obscure school to a final four before he came. You see how that works? You have to have a nice resume or win big early to prove yourself. Pope when he was announced just remember how the fanbase reacted? I want to win you want to fight. Weed has nothing to do with bb success. Alabama has the most oppressive weed laws in the country and two top 5 teams. You really can’t argue and you definitely cannot anticipate to see where things are going. That’s popes problem too. It takes him 4 possessions to figure out 1 guy is killing us. That inability to read the game isn’t just going to appear tomorrow and having mark fox as his top advisor gives me zero hope.

Idk cal gave us a title contender year one after even more tumultuous circumstances before he came in. Now it should be even easier. I’m not expecting a title contender in a day my point is building a roster to win now is simple with NIL and transfer portal. But cal is a perfect example of what can happen when you hire a guy with a top team. He will bring them with him. Pope brought not much with him from his program and popes appeal is narrow compared to other coaches. People aren’t chomping at the bit to play for him.
I’ll add. I hate to but I have a very good friend. D-1 womens soccer coach, Mormon. The guy has a helluva time recruiting because he’s Mormon. He was fired at one point because of proselytizing (which he wasn’t it was social media) but rehired years later because he can take nothing and coach them up very well. Still all the time he tells me it’s difficult where he is in the south to recruit because he is Mormon. He had to ditch his old social media and scrub all the Mormon stuff. Totally reinvented himself. Winning again but this stuff has an impact.

It's going to take some work to undo all the damage Cal did to this program, but Pope has already made a lot strides.
The ignorance is in your statement. It’s called reading the game. It’s why cal collapsed as a coach. The inability to adjust quickly. The inability to recognize the one player breaking the team down. Not to mention he should have cut his rotation by now but it’s a panic. That terrible lineup he left for 5 possessions was the difference in the game. We turned it like 4 times and they converted everytime. You got a guy in Perry who against most sec teams cannot stay goal side of the guy he’s defending. He gets blown by. Yeah sub patterns all year have been sketchy even at full strength. I think it’s ignorance to not recognize that. I mean it’s a serious problem

Take away the injuries and any reasonable person could say we would see a difference in our W/L record; at least 2-3 more wins.
With all the injuries, the chance for this team to jell together was severely effected. Yes, younger players got valuable playing time but in a league that is as strong as the SEC this year, learning on the job is not your best option.
To come into a situation well behind the 8 ball like Pope did; no team, no coaches, no NIL in place and having to start behind other coaches who already was a step ahead in the recruiting trail, is a really tough position to be put in. Yet, this man came in here anyway, knowing the expectations and how the fan base was divided, upset and had to heal this issue as well, is remarkable what he has done under these circumstances.
For any UK fan to come out and bitch and whine is just wrong. There is no doubt coaches go into the portal and get players they find out too late are not a good fit or just son't want to expand their game but then it is too late unless the NCAA goes full route the NBA way and has a trade deadline.
I like Bruce Pearl but after watching his team, good as they are, I hate that he allows players like the kid with 3 names act like a smart ass more than not. To be good is one thing, but to be cocky and arrogant while so good is something that UK is not. You do not teach class but create an environment for such things to exist.
Why can players score, run back down the court making hand gestures and faces at the crowd and UK bench and get no technical called but if our players do anything close to that, they get T-ed up.
That flagrant on Butler was nonsense. any player going up in the air like Butler did raises their non shooting arm out for balance. It was a basketball play but no days players act they have been assaulted and cry like school children.
Trying to get a new team together, deal with all the old BS left Coach Pope (NIL lacking, no returning players, no coaches to assist in his transition to the program and deal with SEC refs is a lot to deal with trying to bring this team together then have all these injuries.
To any UK fan who does not like this season, I do not know what to say except try and look at the positives or find another team that makes you happy.

Yes he does. You don't beat Duke, Gonzaga, Tenn twice and Florida by accident. I choose to give him time and bring in his recruits. Speaking of which, Jasper Johnson may be the most important recruit he'll ever have. If he looks great next year and is a high lottery draft pick it will help Pope on the recruiting trail.
