Dirk Minniefield on the pre-game...

Dirk was the biggest waste of talent that has ever played at Kentucky. With his raw talent he should have been one of the greatest players in the history of Kentucky basketball, and a star in the nba. He was neither. He had to many interests other than basketball. What a waste.

Elaborate please. What happened? I’ve heard Jerry Eaves say Dirk was great. Was he NBA talent good?

Yeah he got up but the extra secondary lift was from contact with the defender. Still he got up enough to get to the guys shoulders to get that second lift.

Talent wise he was nba good. He played a little in the nba but that was it. He ended up in the penitentiary.. Could have been an all time great, but he had other priorities, that did not include basketball. Doesn't matter how much talent you have, if you don't work at it, you will never reach your potential.

Dirk is the all-time career assist leader at Kentucky. He leads second place (Epps) by over 100. So I don’t see how you can say he wasn’t a star here. And yeah maybe he flamed out as a pro due to drug use, but I’d cool it on calling him a waste. He’s been counseling young pros on the dangers of drugs for 28 years. What’s your impact on society been?

coming out of high school Dirk was seen as another Isaiah Thomas and had all the talent in the world. He had a solid career at UK as a field general type but never showed the all around scoring skills he was capable of. He did struggle with some of the typical issues other athletes did at the time and let that hold him back IMO. My dad actual managed him in the insurance business for a short while after the NBA thing didn’t work out. ThAt didn’t work out either. But he was a good guy and in fairness had a lot of hype to live up to that was probably unfair and is under appreciated for the career he did have.

When you have the athletic talent that Minnifield had and do no more with it than he did, in my opinion it is a waste. He may be the all time assist leader in assists here, but when you mention Kentucky's all time greats, Minnifield's name won't be mentioned, even though he had as much talent as any of them, and more than most. If you don't know how I can say he wasted his talent, here it is, Minniefirld wasted that awesome athletic talent that he was blessed with. I wish him the best too, but facts are facts.

I guess that’s the way everything looks from such lofty heights

Dirk gets extra lift off the Bulldogs arms with his knees.
Not extra lift. I will agree he may have received sustained lift though.
I wish we could have got to see a couple of seasons with Minnie and the Blur as a starting backcourt. Sadly they both enjoyed other things more than hoops.
Every player ever, except BYU players, have enjoyed "other" things more than basketball. P***y is the motivating factor for all of man's conquests. It's settled nature.

Yes that goes without saying. Not what I was talking about though. What I am talking about wasn't legal.

That was the best dunk I ever witnessed by a UK player. I remember back in the ‘80s there were several high rising guards in the 6’3-6’4 range. Dirk. David Thompson. Darrell Griffith.

I believe his not showing his scoring ability was a Joe B mandate...he didn't want his p.g. jacking up jumpers when he had Bowie and Turpin on the blocks and Hord and Master on the wings

Went to HS with Dirk. His scoring average actually went DOWN every season as he become a better basketball player and less of just a scorer.

I can say from my perspective I have never seen anyone with so much talent.

As a person, thru high school and his years at UK ..... if I were not a Lafayette and UK fan, I would not have been pulling for Dirk personally. His issues are well known. He expected things to be given to him because he was a star player. Jerk Minniefield would have fit him better.

I hope he has turned his life around and is a better person for what he went thru. Great potential can be a burden, he didn't wear it particularly well at the time. But on the court, as a young man, he was everything.
