Dick Vitale has gotten so bad it's almost impossible to believe

It's more a personal opinion... but he really doesn't spend much of any time on the actual game. He spends so much time on topics that aren't part of the actual game.
- "what would happen if Anthony Davis was a Sr, Towns was a So, Noel was a Jr, etc... In reality Noel and Towns probably come to UK because Davis was not at UK and in NBA, etc..
- Does his typical Duke drivel for a few minutes, etc..

He's really always been that way...but he spends very little time giving color commentary on the game at hand which is old to me.

Bill Walton is the same...hard to listen to... Screws up the game for those that want to watch!

I've actually liked Vitale and I always thought he gave a pretty fair shake towards KY. I know he has a "Dook" Vitale rep but I don't really see it (then again I don't follow Duke or really any team that I don't have diplomas from ;) ). Still I can see that indeed he's not a spring chicken (76) anymore...

I agree, and don't. In his early years on ESPN he was a real advocate of college basketball, and he really did focus on the teams that were playing instead of the rest. Later he began using his position as a pulpit to basically preach what's on his mind. As you say talk about topics not relevant to the game or the two teams playing it. That's what soured me on him. If you want a pulpit become a preacher or a politician. When your the color guy for a college basketball game talk about the two teams playing and things related to them. We all know his favorite topic is Duke. As an example he mentioned UK has the #1 recruiting class for next year. Great and appropriate. But he just couldn't help mention Duke was #2 and right there with us. A minor thing I grant you, and one I'm overly sensitive to, but an example of how he always drifts off topic. He really should just retire and focus on his charity work. I do some charitable, volunteer work, but he's in a position to do some real good. He is a great speaker, and he has the ability to get people to make donations. He should focus on that.

The only thing I could see as a legit reason to not like the guy is the Patterson situation. Other than that, I don't get it.

If you are annoyed at Vitale, you have only yourself to blame. Listen to Leach and Pratt.

Yes, we always seem to hear this in a Vitale thread, but you realize there are circumstances beyond your control that may cause you to have to listen. Some have kids that are in sporting or various activities that may be going on during that time, so the person may have to DVR it.

It isn't always "it's your fault".

Yesterday, he spent his efforts about how Vandy should go get a 4th foul on Poythress and how Stalling is so terrific with his kids. At that same time, we starting increasing our lead.

Did he not question Cal yesterday on why his team isn't getting any better? Did he not call out Skal/Cal for only playing 2 min and we were pulling away?

Matt Jones can slobber over Vitale as much as he wants, but I've heard enough of Dickie to last too long.

Vitale would never question any other coach like he does with Cal. Perhaps because Vitale knows Cal can take it and these other crybaby coaches wouldn't befriend him anymore?

I believe Vitale really helped promote College basketball and has great enthusiasm for the game, I didn't appreciate his berating BBN when Tubby left, I know and understand he was trying to stick up for Tubby and thats OK but he really went overboard with it freaking out on national TV he should have just give his opinion if he thought that was necessary and let it go.

He should have kept his mouth shut about Tubby. It was NO concern of his what UofK did. He got fired from Detroit, so I don't think his coaching resume is great.

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

Always liked DV because he loved the game and promoted it. These days you just endure him because he actually doesn't give color on the game. Yesterday I was wondering why Ulis was not in the game and finally concluded he had gotten a 2nd foul though it had not been mentioned. Ulis having to sit is an important game factor which should have been talked about.

he said it on Twitter and he'll say it for the 7th time today.......

He's got a better chance of being a sex symbol than.........Something...
He does need some new material...same old, same old is getting a bit tiresome.

Hubris. Vitale thinks that he's such a celebrity that his schtick is the reason people are watching the game. (In much the same way pitino thought he'd cause a bunch of Cat fans to become UL fans because of his presence on the sidelines in louisville.) The sad part is: he's (vitale) probably right in this assumption for fans of lesser programs. He's just to thick to understand that at UK it's all about The Cats. His "celebrity status" pales in comparison to anything Wildcat related. we're not rushing through the schedule circling "vitale games" like they're rare treats to be savored; his presence doesn't add pop to game days in Lexington like it may in other places. In Lexington he's a sideshow attraction who distracts, and thereby detracts, from the game at hand.

One thing in particular that irked me yesterday from the braying ass was his offhand comment about UKs tournament position: "They're obviously not a 2 or 3 seed...". There's nothing "obvious" about where we'll be seeded in a tourney that's still 6 or 7 weeks away. Statements like that can do nothing but prejudice the selection committee if he repeats it enough.

If he never did another Cat game it would suit me to a T. (And I didn't even mention the Patterson backstab or the tubby tirade!)

Is he still trying to tell everyone this team is not getting better like he did coach cal?? I loved Cal's response "you haven't been watching college basketball then" or something along those lines.

Watched most of the game with sound off (Got tried of hearing about the ACC early)! With DISH hard to sync radio and TV so just watched the game with no sound (killed CC also)... have to admit it wasn't horrible. Like watching where there is multi TVs and no sound. ESPN announcers should beware, network might give it a go what with Revenue down so badly don't have to pay for announcers!

VERY NEXT words out of his mouth..."Ulis is unstoppable!!!".

Which one is it Dick!? Just an explaination is all we would like from the coaching wunderkind and Detroit cast-off.
Compared to 2 of Cal's teams here this one isn't great, hell we lost to Auburn,Ohio St and an a very average UCLA just because we don't like what he said doesn't make it not true.

What he said was by UK standards this is not a great team, what part of that is incorrect.

I don't really care for him anymore. I use to just enjoy his enthusiasm, but his schtick is old to me. He's really gone out of his way to say how we're not a great team, and this isn't like Cals past UK teams.

He also keeps those free throw numbers from our two final four losses, to UCONN, in his back pocket. He brings those up often for some odd reason.

Probably my favorite call from the game yesterday was when Willis stripped their all-world center at half court. Dick couldn't help but tell us what a great play it was....by the guy who lost the damn ball and flailed around on the ground while we were laying the ball in. That was a keeper.

Not one time, that I recall, did Vitale talk about zone/man defense. He didn't talk about what Skal did wrong or may have done wrong to be on the bench. He didn't talk about what offense was being run or strategy or just about anything having to do with the game.

For him to say that Ulis is great or he is a winner or he has a winner's mentality is just not helpful for those of us who want to understand the game better. He simply adds nothing but noise and hype. I hate hype.

I understand, that's a matter of personal preference and his role isn't to provide in-depth analysis. I feel we always get enough of the analysis between games and I don't mind the guy being a hype man during the action.

He is what he is, he knows and loves the game and keeps things interesting, yea at times he goes on and on about things. Obviously ESPN and lots of others like what he does with his speaking engagements and endorsements. He has always been pretty good to Kentucky and if he sez something people don't like, even though it may be true, they get mad. He won't be on many more years, let the guy ride off in to the sunset in peace. He has been on since a lot of posters were young kids and basically he's still the same, there are a whole lot more that are worse than him.

I would add defending Roy, UNC and even PJ. Yet, he called for Pearl to be fired for allegations that were unproven at the time.

well he spent the entire sec tournament semifinal against auburn last year screaming about how pearl deserved a second chance

seriously, the entire game

I watched the replay today so I could hear the broadcast because I couldn't hear it at the bar last night. Mr Vitale didn't do a bad job like everyone else is saying. He was right when he said they weren't great. They're good and there aren't any great teams this year but alot of good teams. There's alot of overreaction to this......People need to just chill out.....GO CATS!

Okay, what did he say about the game itself that gave you a better understanding of it? Your example is an example of how he doesn't talk about the game.

I feel sorry for Dicky V. His health is fading rapidly. I saw him at the game yesterday and he struggles just to walk across the court. And he is in obvious pain. But he took time to take pics with some kids and other fans. And when he saw Joe B. Hall sitting just a few seats behind him he went out of his way to get Hall's attention…waving his arms at him profusely and then finally just getting up and walking up to Hall's seat to chat with him. Just two old cogers talking hoops in Rupp. Or maybe they were talking about Viagra vs. Cialis…who knows. Still a nice snapshot in time.

Dicky V knows the game of basketball and he has been great for the game. I agree that he gets annoying with his silly rants these days…but i give him a pass. I give him a pass because of what he has contributed to the college game (especially in the early years) and i give him a pass because he is old.

Those of you who don't like him should just chill and be patient. My guess is that this year or next will be his last. And then you can start complaining about the guys that replace him…who, for the most part, will be much, much worse than Dicky V.

the only analyst close to as bad as vitale is elmore with his redundant, reactionary, self-important pronouncements

vitale should have stayed in the stands with joe b

he sucks and he always has

Well, he wasn't any different than he normally is. He did say that UK will be a dangerous team come march. Everyone has their own opinion of him but I don't have a problem with him......
