These are typically videos that break down strengths and weaknesses. I think many UK fans have tempered their vision when it comes to these kids after the highlight videos of guys like the Harrison twins, Bam, Teague, etc.

Very few fit the criteria you’re bemoaning.

Read the board much?

Then blame the stupid fans. I enjoy the highlight videos because it astounds me that a 16-17 year old can do ridiculous things like that, and I think it's great that kids who are in the top .0001% of the world get to show off what they can do.

Only morons equate what they see there with college basketball success. It's the rankings that so far more damage than the mixtapes.

Oh, I agree, the rankings fuel the insanity.

UNC won the championship this year shooting a whopping 18% from 3, they were just longer and won with defense. Enough with the shooting crap.

True, and UNC shot 32% from three a year before (on the season) and was a mere possession from winning back-to-back titles.

Give me NBA length and elite rim protection over having an abundance of Mychal Mulder’s running around. Elite spacing predicated on an abundance of high level shooters is an NBA necessity. Not so for the college game.

Your point would hold more weight if they didn't need some atrociously blown calls to get past a hobbled Arkansas who had them beat in the final 3 minutes, a really bad first half to get out of the elite 8, and questionable calls on Gonzagas X factor (Collins) keeping him benched and fouled out with 15 minutes left to squeak by in that game.

Getting hot from three is the way you win a game or two in the tournament. Get an upset.

Preventing threes is more important in winning the whole tournament, imo.

We have a typical Cal defensive squad next year, in that we can knock teams off the three point line and funnel them toward shot blockers. Even more so if we snag Bamba.

NBA is a totally different animal, because all you have to do is outshoot the other guy 4 times out of 7.

The game still bogs down the deeper you go, but the Warriors can lay an egg against the Blazers in round one and live to fight another day.

You are correct about that particular game. Matchups make games. Every matchup is different. If you think inside-outside scoring skills don't have a huge impact on most competitive college basketball matchups, that would be incorrect. Example. Kentucky beat North Carolina 103-100 primarily because of perimeter scoring, especially Monk. But as you correctly stated, defensive skills and tactics also have a big impact on most tournament games. Example. Why did Kentucky appear to play so much better against UCLA than against Wichita State? (Because Wichita State is a much better defensive team than UCLA.) Each game has its own story.

My point was over emphasizing shooting is stupid, the NCAA is completely unpredictable, UNC was an AWFUL shooting team the last two years and was in the championship and then won this year. Rebounding is just as important, defense is just as important, etc etc I just think people talk way too much about shooting on here. Ya shooting is great but there are just as many important and even more important things you need, especially in the randomness of the NCAA tournament.

yes, people here overemphasize on shooting too much.

Our interior has been pretty weak, and that's what we need to strengthen. It's not a coincidence that UNC last two years most resembles 2014 and 2015 season of UK.

Yes, and I find that while some of the fly-by-night posters fit your criteria, most of the fans who have been here for years are actually quite logical when it comes to player expectations.

Really? Explain all the morose Cal bashing and player trashing that went on. The board is manically schizophrenic after a loss or when a OAD does sit the world on fire. They trash Cal when an 18 yr old doesn't turn out to be LaBron. If you haven't seen this, you can't read. There is no debate on this any more than you can argue the sky is blue. This will be at a fever pitch by August.

Every year some fans think the freshmen will hit the ground running. How quick we forget Wenyen and SKJ. It will likely take one or two half the year to adjust and one will probably struggle for the whole year like SKJ

Something no one seems to mention is SKJ and Wenyen have the potential to make a nice jump in their soph year and beat out P.J and Richards for starting/back up minutes. The only locks are the guards since UK doesn't return any. Line up could be

Green
Diallo
Vanderbilt
Wenyen
Hump/SKJ

Can make a list of long-standing posters who do this that exceeds even ten? Let's see it. Right now, you're just pitching with vague generalities. I stand by my comment. Most of the regulars here who have posted for years don't fit your criteria. Low post count posters do fit your criteria. I've never debated that part of your argument.

I love when this happens, I give you a list and they don't have enough posts for you. Or haven't been here long enough, etc. Hell you called me a 'fly by night' poster and I've been here over 10 years, 2 years longer than you.

I don't know your "hallowed regulars" so I can't pick from that list, but there are probably some on it. So I'm not going to get baited with your nonsense. Suffice to say dozens fit this mold. Overhyped outrageous expectations followed by player trashing coach bashing despondency with the players that don't measure up to the fan's self inflated BS. Then they declare Cal to be a player first megalomaniac that doesn't care about championships or wins. All of which is nothing but blatant ignorance.

If you can see or haven't seen that, there is little point giving you ten, as I have no confidence you could count them given that you clearly haven't been able to so far.

I've never call you a "fly-by-nighter." You're actually a decent poster when you're not insulting others with your patronizing ramblings. Kind of pathetic that you have to take to insulting the intelligence of others if they don't agree with your condescending diatribes.

Exactly.

I seem to recall both having great 'mix tapes' too. Both highly touted. Now fans have all but abandoned SKJ and they very skeptical about WG. I personally think both will develop into fine ball players. Maybe not even this year, however.

Then actually read the damn board. This year was the worst in my memory about demonization the players, coach and system after grotesquely inflated expectations. This year was worse than 2014.

We have way too many rabid fans ready to eat our young players when they don't turn into lottery picks by December. I have no problem pointing out the trend as it has already started again this year.

I’m not going to argue that it’s a problem amongst irrational fans. My only issue with your overall point is that I don’t think those opinions are really worth confronting on a vague, nameless level. The illogical deductions made by such fans doesn’t typically extend to our more respected fans on this board - fans who have proven themselves to be pretty sound, and I think the bigger problem is treating ranking systems as is they’re all equal. Logical fans understand that mixtapes are window dressing. I’m not sure fans following fallacious views are worth taking on in vague generalities. It’s better to confront them directly, if your goal is to actually change opinions.

I do, however, wholeheartedly agree that there’s been an influx of poor logic over the last year, mostly by newer posters or by posters who are only now making their presence known.

Rest my case. Evidence of severe decay.

Decay of what? It's not a f***ing tooth, it's a highlight reel. Are we supposed to think that a top 10 player from that class who is touted for his defense, can't defend, and a guy that's 6'6 or 6'7 with freak athleticism, a ton of aggressiveness, and a giant wingspan can't rebound the ball or whatever? Lolol.

Depends on the issue. I think the term respected poster would very greatly depending on the one doling out the 'respect'. I think it's a little naive thinking you can do much more than characterize a population as large as the one under discussion. The trend is disturbing and to sweep it under the rug by saying an anointed few don't follow it is also naive. I stand on what I said without reservation.

They do have reading classes for you. I think you were unable to grasp the metaphorical reference to a sports fan brain rotting from ESPN rooted marketing. I don't recall saying anything about rotting player commercials or teeth for that matter.

As far as your last sentence, did you watch many games this year? We actually had both situations.

Poor thing.

Again, continue to take on those posters directly then. And I don't know who you're referencing as "sweeping it under the rug." I'm aware of what you're describing, although I don't really feel as strongly as you do about it being some kind of major issue. Fans of every level of every sport have unrealistic expectations. If it's an issue for you, keep calling out the posters who you feel are responsible for doing the behavior. Not everyone here will share your views on this issue, but that's fine.

Gotta agree here.

The narrative is already being spun that we'll platoon and be loaded and the best defensive team Cal has had and have this many five stars, and it's just not realistic.

Once Bamba and another guard (or two) are on board, folks will completely lose sight of any realistic expectations next year, and then immediately turn on the kids and Cal when we lose 7-8 games or more.

It’s an issue, but how prevalent is it? For every fan who is suddenly deifying next season’s roster, there seems to be just as many who are lamenting the OAD as a faulty system. Of course, there’s fans in the middle who withhold judgment and try to make an informed opinion based on actually waiting to see the team shape up in the fall. I’m not sure any particular group is dominating the narrative right now.

My question is how much time should a rational fan spend worrying about irrational assertions of others? I think the only way to stop the behavior, on any level, is to confront it directly without vague, sweeping allegations. Take the noted fans on directly. Quote their messages and tackle their opinions. If posters aren’t willing to do that, I’m not sure I understand what the purpose in condemning the behavior of these fans would be in the first place.

How prevalent does it have to be? We've had a few pockets of pus from our fan base make death threats against a ref. We all know how well that is playing in the national media. Was it 1? 5? 50?

Pus is pus. Don't have to call each bacteria.

I'm not disagreeing with you. You want to hold fans accountable of the message board; go for it. I look forward to seeing how you call out fans directly in the fall.

You're right, but it becomes a war of attrition. And it's a bit like a disease, because our less informed fans (not in an insulting way, I mean fans who don't live on this board like we degenerates) show up and see the loud minority who start the outrageous threads and adopt that as general perception.

Which, again, why does any of this really matter? I wish I could explain why I care. But it's irrational and meaningless from a grand perspective.

I'm not a prosecutor. I'm a guy on a message board. 50 guys make idiots of themselves, I'm not compelled to provide names, dates and evidentiary quotes with chains of custody. Merely stating we have many idiots will suffice. It's a message board.

As far as accountability, please. You used that word, not me.

If we get Bamba, this will be Cal's best defensive team even better than the 38-1 '15 team.Bamba and Richards are as good as WCS and Towns ( I think better). Add in Vanderbilt, Diallo, Washington and Green (an excellent if not Ulis quality on ball defender) and this group will be better than the twins , Booker, Lyles and Ulis. Diallo is a tremendous athlete with great length as are Vanderbilt, Washington, Bamba and Richards. Add Gabrial and Alexander (another long athlete),, and this team will lock down everyone. (except maybe sexton who is fun to watch)

THIS SEASON was supposed to be Cal's best defensive team too, remember?

We sucked butt for 3/4ths of the season on defense compared to other UK teams,

"Bamba and Richards are as good as WCS and Towns ( I think better)"... THIS QUOTE IS INSANITY

I'm not proclaiming anything on a group of high schoolers in a down year and yet to play a college game.

I’m actually curious, do you wish to change some minds in confronting something you very obviously see as a real problem within the fan base?

Of course not. I comment on what I read. What are you doing? Folks make a response to me, I reply.

You can't change the mind of a idiot that thinks a bag of crap is a pot of gold. You can however state, beware idiots holding bags.

For future reference, when you see the term "respected poster" thrown around they are usually referring to people like me.

I agree with you. Our fans our irrational and after our second OOC loss next year it will be a toxic again like it was a better part of this season.

I think there are only a few posters with wild swings from irrational exuberance to the pits of despair.

Most are fairly consistent within a range. Some only show up when times are tough.

But I don't think Diallo having a cool highlight reel is any kind of problem.
