The 247 site is saying that De'Niro Laster is rumored to be transferring to UK from Minn. He is 6'4" 230 lbs. LB. Apparently went to high school with Dorian Baker. He posted a pic of the UK locker room to his twitter saying #BBN and # cantwait. Would have 3 years eligibility after sitting out the year from NCAA transfer rules.

He played as a true frosh for the Gophers?

He RS in 2013. Then played 9 games in 2014. I was going off what the other site said. Seems like he would only have 2 years left to play with the transfer year eating one of them. They said there was a rule giving him the 3rd year back.

Looks like he'd only have 2 years of eligibility left. He redshirted in 2013, played 9 games last year, and then would have to sit out a year before playing here. So he'd be a junior before he could play here.

That's interesting. If true then it would seem there is essentially no penalty for transferring with a redshirt becasue either way you still get 3 years eligibility left. The whole idea behind the mandatory one year of sitting on transfers was to avoid massive numbers of transfers. Not that I'm complaining :)

That is what I was thinking too. Is it possible he was injured and can get a medical waiver for the 6th year? It could just be someone talking that does not know all the facts too.

Not really. If I read this correctly it means Love will not be eligible this year. We need him more right now then we do De'Niro.

The new rule is not a factor in Love's request as it does not take effect until this year.

At the end the article states, "The new rule will go into effect immediately, meaning players who are transferring for the 2015-16 season are subject to the change." That's the upcoming season and would seem to make Love eligible for a 6th season. It's the NCAA though and I'm sure they'll make it up as they go.

My recollection is that a player or group of players impacted appealed the retroactive nature of the rule. But, I cannot tell you now my source for that belief.

That is not how it was reported or presented when passed. But, hope you are correct.

Interesting, if correct, then they would not even consider his hardship request. With the NCAA, one can never tell.

On the other hand, if this is correct he should be given the extra year.

The rule seems oddly considerate of the student athlete. Are we sure this is an NCAA rule?

6 tackles, .5 tfl, .5 sack as a rs freshman. he played wr in hs as well as olb'er/de. he was ranked #58 wr coming out of hs but his tape looked a lot better on the D side of the ball. saw some minnie poster say it was iffy on if he would start this year. sounded like if they went to more of a 3/4 then he would start and if they stayed more 4/3 then the other guy would. im guessing by this transfer that maybe they are sticking to more of 4/3 and he would have to bulk up quite a bit to play de in that scheme.

his tape reminded me a lot of eli brown that signed with us this year.

Sometimes the articles about the rules miss some key points as the NCAA by-laws are often complex and entangled. The only way you really know is to read the actual by-law language.

Even though Love technically transferred in CY 2014 (before the new rule went into effect), his affected eligibility would be for the 2015/2016 season regardless of whether the old or new standard was used.

I think his request and the Tulsa player's request could be adjudicated under the "old" waiver criteria. Most kids transfer at the end of the spring semester as a first semester transfer has no affect on their eligibility timetable. If adjudicated under the "old" waiver request process I think it would likely be denied as are most such waiver requests to the 1 year residency requirement. Furthermore, if his waiver request was adjudicated under the old provisions (and denied) he might not be eligible for the 6th year granted under the new provisions.

FWIW, I think the new rule allowing any transfer to earn back that lost year of eligibility is excellent. Plenty of kids make a mistake and the loss of a year of eligibility is a pretty steep price to pay. JMO.

Peace

The last sentence in the third paragraph is the nightmare outcome. However, I suspect , UK would request a waiver to the four to play five rule if that occurs. I would think such a waiver request would be granted but you never know with the NCAA.

He would not have started for us this year, doubt he would have made the 2 deeps. He mostly played LDE in pass rushing situations last year, but was way too small. He is closer to 6'1" or 6'2" 220#s, not the listed weight/height above.

Good player, but lacks the COG and ball awareness skills to be a big contributor at OLB. Wish him the best, he is very athletic and could grow into the position.
