Defense

Kentucky's approach early in the season was, "Let em shoot, we can outscore anybody. " That worked pretty well until getting into SEC play. Noah and Perry were not asked to play much defense in highschool because it was important that they not foul out. With a couple of exceptions, the rest of the team had rather shoot than play defense.
But they are athletes and they can play defense if motivated and boy, have they been motivated the last two games. If they keep playing defense this way, they can beat anybody.

Tennessee scored 64 points last night. I am certain Travis Perry's man didn't scored them all!
Our defense looked much improved last night. But what we really need to improve on is our rebounding. In our last 3 games Ansley Almonor has played 61 minutes and got only 3 rebounds. And Koby Brea has played 92 minutes and grabbed only 8 rebounds. Improve our rebounding & get everybody healthy & we're a serious Final Four contender.

You’re right about rebounding. We have some guys who just cannot anticipate rebounding position and block out. I was pleased to see that Garrison got 5 rebounds last night (a team high), but Almonar only had 1 rebound in 21 minutes. Too many times I see guys standing and watching on long rebounds, while the other team gets them.
I’m delighted in the win and in our 3-pt shooting and with the defense in general, but we can’t allow teams to get three or four shots in one possession because we could not grab the rebound.

It is improving. Other than that 3-4 minute stretch when he had Noah, Perry, Almanor, Bree, and Garrison in the game I thought the defense was really good. I never want to see that lineup again this season

These guys need to realize that not every shot is going in and when they see one of the teammates putting up a shot go to the basket to rebound. Defense is greatly improved .

We seem to be doing overall on D about staying in front of our man but we’re still struggling with high pick n rolls and then we can’t grab a rebound for some reason. Clean up the careless turnovers and emphasize the glass and we can make runs in both tournaments, really need to get the W Saturday cause we have momentum and need to beat the teams we’re supposed and are better than.

Kentucky's D is improving. It's faaaar from perfect, but it's slowly becoming "serviceable"
That’s all I’m wanting to see. Just show me u have the ability to stay in front of your man so when it gets crunch time we can get the stops needed down the stretch. That’s hurt us in several of the losses this season. Couldn’t get stops when they mattered most. Last night was a good start

The standing around still happens. I concur. They need to address that and get some bodies crashing to the glass and blocking out in proper position. There's too many times other teams have simply out hustled our team to get rebounds. I still want to see them all hustle every single play and get constant movement. they're lethal when they keep it moving.

All of our big games early on have been against the elite offenses in the country like Duke, Florida, Alabama, even Gonzaga and Louisville. Our defense was bound to improve as we got to play against the UGAs , USCs and UTs of the SEC.

The last two games we held South Carolina to their second lowest output on offense and UT to their 3rd lowest output on offense.

So......for two games......it's been good. I wonder if some of last night had to do with Robinson being out.

Tho we need to be reminded, our defense was awful last season and we still had some games we were very good in. Like vs Auburn.

The defense has slowly been picking up. I don’t see this team being worldbeaters on the defensive side, but we really just need it to be serviceable.

Outside of that one sequence where Tenn got about 3 offensive rebounds, I thought we did a much better job of limiting those second chances opportunities. That area has been a killer for us this season. Cutting back on those will be huge going forward.

Haters gonna hate. There’s a learning curve and Perry is coming along fine. His defense is improving and they have to respect him on offense. He’s earning his minutes.
He actually matched up well with ZZ in the first matchup as well. Seems he can use angels and is laterally quick enough to hang with smaller finesse guards…it’s the pit bull type guards he really struggles with when he gets bullied and physically knocked off his defensive position on drives. Once he adds 15lbs in the weight room…he should be able to be an Aaron Craft, Greg Paulus type of guard

Did they get stops against Duke when they mattered most? What about Gonzaga? At Tennesee?

We aren’t a great defensive team by any means but back when we were healthy we were decent on that end

Our defense is much improved. Our defensive rebounding is not.

It always feels like teams get a ton of chances but they only had 8 offensive boards. They rebounded 25% of their missed shots. On the season they typical rebound 37%.

So not bad.

We have to remember we are in a league where there's just a ton of teams that crash the boards on offense.

Actually during conference play we are 2nd in defensive rebounding %.
