Dear Cal, "Coach Your Team"

There's a sign in your office that states "Coach Your Team". Our fanbase and most importantly, our young players need you to do just that. We don't need you to spend 3 days at UMASS celebrating the raising of your banner to the rafters. That's a nice honor and congratulations but by attending that ceremony, your focus was not where it should have been this past week. You should have been HERE giving your team your undivided attention and preparing them for Ohio State. Thad Matta was "Coaching His Team" and it was apparent from the tip off to the final buzzer. Time to get back to the basics, roll your sleeves up, leave the accolades of the past behind and "Coach Your Team".

That is what our problem was yesterday?

Some incredible threads the last 2 days.

Hey 3 fan do you just go to every thread you disagree with and tell someone to shut up?

Honestly are you like 12 or something? Not saying i agree with the OP but this is like 4th thread you just tell someone to shut up.

I mean na na boo boo to you to. Why even open and read the threads? All pretty clear in the titles it was something probably about cal. People dont have to shut up. Their are rules if criticism goes past the line mods can step in. Pretty sure we do not need you running around telling people to shut up. Lol and its kinda childish

I don't mind fans questioning Cal or our schemes etc etc , but IMO his problem is not unique to strong leaders and highly highly successful peope .. ego . Sometimes it gets in the way . And I don't expect him to be perfect, he's allowed mistakes .

I think some fans def need to step back off the ledge. Without a doubt, we should all be concerned as fans. However, it seemed to me that OSU played out of their minds in the first half to build that ultimately insurmountable lead. I am cautiously optimistic about our second half play. The guys were hustling, getting after it on both ends. Murray stepped out of a slight shooting slump to start the season and may have emerged as this teams go-to-guy. Always best to try and be optimistic. Also jeez guys we are 11 games in with a ton of young talent that clearly is not as game ready as some past Cal and UK recruits.

I thank all you have to do is look at Cal record, I agree we was out played yesterday, but OS had there game of the yr, we do not have a inside game, but hard to blame it on Cal the season is early , hope this team can learn from mistakes..

You say this as if it is easy to coach a bunch of incoming highly touted freshman every year, having those young men find their place on our team is probably an extremely hard thing to do that we are taking for granted because Cal is so good at it.

Not once did I say Cal isn't a good Coach or isn't great at getting young players to mesh. The issue in my opinion ( and yes it's just my opinion only) is Cal didn't have this particular team prepared for Ohio State. Hard to prepare a team when you're not there.

A lot of people are very closed minded on here and just shout down differing opinions.

I get what the OP is saying. Cal talks about how young his teams are, how much they don't know, how hard it is to have a new team each year etc. So it can come across as odd to some that you come up here to MA for 3 days when right now is prime practice/learning time. Especially when your current team has obvious issues, you would think he would want to take advantage of every minute he has to teach his team.

I picture people like you as a back-yard dog breeder or maybe a Tow-truck driver that sits around waiting for people to park so you can tow them.

UK9, you're right about lack of preparation. Hopefully, Cal will use this as motivation for the UL game. BTW, some bashing you are the same that think Goodwin is better than Murray, lol.

So, did the UK players sit around eating pizza and playing video games while Cal was being honored at UMass? Or were they continuing with their normal practice routines and game prep, directed by three of the best assistant coaches in the land?
All I can tell ya is when I was in school, whenever we had a substitute teacher, we didn't work or focus as hard as when our actual teacher was there. And, no, I'm not equating the assistant coaches to substitute teachers. It's the mentality of all kids. When the cat's away, the mice will play.

Thanks for the compliment! Lizard Lick Towing is one of my favorite shows!

Bash away, I have thick skin. Ohio State was better prepared than we were yesterday. The responsibility lies directly on the Head Coach.

You will have to have thick skin to survive U9K, half the members here have thick brows. Your opinion is valid and respectively said. Most likely a younger coach struggling to be a winner would have not ventured away during the season for three days. However Cal is not a new coach and I can't imagine him not showing for such an event in his honor. That is the price of stardom and success. My criticism of Cal's coaching for Ohio State is simply the fact that he gave to much time to Skal (He has earned practically none of late) and not enough to Humphries whom could be a factor down the stretch. But hey, I'll give Cal a pass since he's a HOFer.

Because this game was scheduled in New England area, it made perfect sense for Cal to go to the U. Mass honor ceremony. I doubt he thought we would lose to Ohio State. I suppose after the loss you can also question allowing all the players to go home for Christmas rather than immediately work on all the issues and prepare for UL. But, I am sure most of the kids are looking forward to going home and Cal perhaps is more concerned with their personal priorities over ours. I have no problem with Cal getting that honor but I think it is an open debate about the rest.

I doubt, even though most of us, including me, think some players time and position should be changed that it will happen. Cal is going to stick with Skal, Briscoe, Poy, etc. as history really pretty much predicts that. It could be argued that any chance of a true run at a National Championship requires Skal to somehow become the player he was thought to be.

Coach Cal must feel a little bit like Moses did when he led the Israelites from bondage out from under the Egyptians(BCG) and they constantly complained and murmered take a minute and read Numbers chapter 11 verses 10-14 and I realize some may say this is a message board and we have the right to question him...but I would say that Coach Cal is one of the two best coaches in america at assembling basketball talent along with the guy from Duke and we have just completed two straight trips to the Final Four..he deserves some awards and time off I am personally all for him.

Keep making the rest of us look dumb. You don't deserve the enjoyment UK basketball has given you. Idiot.
Speaking of Lizard Lick Towing, which one of the cast was your favorite? I'm partial to Amy for obvious reasons. Ron showed a lot of leadership and Bobby would run through a brick wall to repo a car. That guy was dedicated! Great show!

You can taunt all you want, you're just a deadbeat punk. You can't change that, which sucks for you.
Wow, someone's mad. Name calling like idiot and punk is truly revealing. Please stop posting for your own well being.

I am afraid that is not 1/100th of our current problems. I think you just wanted to be creative and add another issue since so many have already been discussed.

And let's face it, you have Ulis and a guy who has been banned over a decade agreeing with you...
Please point out in my OP where I said Cal's absence was the key problem in our current struggles. I simply made an observation and subsequently agreed it was partially a problem. I'm not out on the proverbial ledge ready to jump. I simply think this young team deserves Cal's undivided attention.

What do you propose we do about it?

Put Cal on house arrest? No, we can't do that. If we do that, he wouldn't be able to leave right after one of our games.....exhausted...and travel across the country to watch a recruit play so that we might be able land him, and the OP might be able to gain more enjoyment from UK Basketball that he doesn't even deserve.

Posts like this make me seriously consider the mental status of some people on here. Good grief. Get a life or a hobby or something. UMASS honored him. He didn't set it up. They did. I'm sure you are above such things as that. You would have just said thanks but no thanks. No regard for the years he spent there and the people he befriended.

Do us all a favor and stop telling anyone you're a UK fan.

What a garbage take.

He could coach this team 100 hours per week and it won't change much.

How many practices did he actually miss? I bet at the most it was one.You have one mandatory off day and I believe he was back for wednesdays practice. He does have a private jet you know
