Dan Hurley: 50% of my roster or more is considering the transfer portal

The biggest reason I think he stays is to promote the Mormon faith on the biggest stage in college basketball. I remember reading an article about him right after Coach Pope got this job where the Mormon Church wanted Collin to go to UK for that very reason. Even though he would have been the highest ranked recruit to go to BYU, his new “mission” would be in Lexington, KY.

Hope that hasn’t changed.
Very interesting, thanks for adding that anecdote. It does give me more confidence he’ll be back!

A couple things I'd like to get some board feedback on:

Is the amount of NIL money being thrown around really sustainable going into the future? I know the SEC is making more and more money every year, and a big portion of that is distributed to its member institutions, but still.......it seems maybe to me the amount schools are spending on athletes isn't sustainable. Furthermore, schools with the wealthiest donors get the advantage, because the school has more money to play with. Although, any Yankees fan knows that the most money doesn't always equal championships.

Secondly, is the 15 scholarships thing for sure happening for the 25-26 season? If so, 2 more spots would probably really change our approach to recruiting and the portal.
Excellent post. What do you see as a possible solution to the NIL situation?

Hurley was on last night’s episode of 60 Minutes, I haven’t watched it and don’t plan to. But I saw this clip circulating, where he says “50% of my roster or more is at least considering going into the portal, if not already knows which school they’re going to.” He’s obviously a blowhard but his directness is refreshing at times.

First things first, I wouldn’t mind picking off a guy or two, Solo Ball at the top of the list!

Secondly, I think we need to prepare to lose at least one guy to the portal this year. With the current state of CBB it just seems unreasonable to expect to survive with no attrition. My guesses in order of likelihood are Garrison, Perry, and Chandler (I worry about BYU and all their money with Chandler).

And third, it’s gonna be a wild offseason. We’re already seeing a decent number of guys enter the portal. You have to think Pope has positioned UK well with the style of play and success in year one. It’s funny, I used to get excited for HS recruiting and read every report and watch as many highlights as I could find. Now I barely tune in for that, but I get excited about the portal. Better players available, more condensed, more to track, and it happens almost entirely in the offseason but with the season still fresh in mind.
I’d pay to see someone open hand him in public.

If he has NIL concerns after last offseason with UK and the Lakers trying to hire him, he needs a better agent!
I don’t think personal agents have anything to do with raising NIL $ for schools.

However, I agree with you that coming off back to back championships should have donors lined up ready to write checks. I admittedly have no idea how many big donors are supporting UCONN basketball program. I do know they are few and far between for their football program. Winning usually creates more support.

My OP was that there may be some truth to Hurley’s statement, but he’s also leveraging the situation (and maybe stretching the truth) to get more donors on board to support UCONN basketball.

I disagree, I think there’s no doubt coaches (and ergo their agents) are negotiating NIL guarantees every chance they get. When it became clear Indiana was prioritizing Dusty May, and then shortly after he and Michigan announced a new deal, he would be silly not to include in those negotiations, “oh yeah, did you see what Indiana spent in the portal last year? I’m going to need another $500k per year in NIL if I’m staying.” Just because it doesn’t make it into the public contract doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

With all that said I take your point and think you’re right, it would make a lot of sense if he took that very public opportunity to leverage more NIL support.
