There is another story about a Vandy player who was having a big game and getting away with rough play. Rupp put Stamper in the game. Halfway down the court, Stamper hit him so hard that he slid under the scores table, then Stamper just walked to the bench and sat down. The player finished the game poorly and UK won.

I was playing in a church league in Lawton many, many years ago and was outrebounding this huge native American player when after getting another rebound, I passed the ball up the court and he pushed me down going passed me. I jumped up, ran up from behind him, jumped up and forearmed him in the back of the head. Of course, the refs saw me and did not see what he did so, I was ejected from the game. Funny thing is, after the game we both laughed about it as he and I both apologized for getting pissed. He was a good guy but just got frustrated by this smaller guy outrebounding him.

I live in Elgin OK which is 14 miles From Lawton/FT. Sill. I used to work there before retiring, Wife still does for a military contractor. FT. Sill is where I do most of my bass fishing which next week will be my first time this year as it is starting to warm up a bit.

Ok thanks, the reason I ask, we buried my cousin today I was talking to his son, he retired from the Army in 2016 at Sill, stayed out 30 days then went back to work there as a civil engineer. I guess I was just hoping that you two may have know each other. Sorry kinda a crazy idea!

I retired from the Army in July 1997 but, worked at Sill for 22 years after that starting in early 1999. 7 years with a military contractor and 15 years Civil Service. May have seen him as he had to clear our office (Passenger Travel) when PCSing or Retiring. I retired Civil Service in Sept. 2020.

Walked the Monster early as rain is supposed to be here shortly. A little cooler out this morning than I thought it would be (wind chill) and I did not prepare for it. When we got up on the hill of the route we took, Brrrrrrrrrr. The wind made me pay for my mistake.

You folks enjoy your day and let's hope UK can pull out a win today on both fronts. UK baseball is at 1 eastern I believe so, if the BB game gets ugly, I will turn to the other BB game and hope for the best.

Tip off in less than 3 & 1/2 hours. Well, we have all our players we'll have in the tournament so now it's time to find out. Man, I hope this season doesn't turn into "what could have been" if we didn't have all the injuries.

WC...it's going to be nice and warm next week, but I won't be fishing. Dad had his 1st knee replacement replaced yesterday. I'd feel guilty going without him. Hope he recovers soon. Nighttime top-water action for stripers starts in about a month....I'll go regardless during that time.

I have a book called The Rupp Years by Tev Laudeman . if you run across one, it is a great read. There is a few pages on each team Rupp coached. It tells of his being hired to replace Johnny Mauer who coached a style of slow basketball nicknamed submarine ball. Mauer later became famous as a football coach.

Rupp had a player named Leroy "Cowboy" Edwards. I think the year was 1934 and they won a Helms title with him. Because of LeRoy, Rupp became the first college team to play a national schedule. Leroy often outscored the opposing team by himself. An infamous game in Madison Square Garden featuring Leroy led to rules changes. As late as when Issel was playing, Rupp was saying Leroy was the strongest player he ever saw. Rupp had secured a very ambitious schedule for the next season and Leroy left early to play pro ball.

There are stories about the scandal and Bill Spivey. Bill was a seven footer who was dominant. He passed a lie detector test during the scandal investigation, but was basically kicked out of college and black balled from the NBA. He was the equal of Wilt Chamberlain in exhibition games.

I don't have the book handy, but there was a player who left UK complaining playing for UK was like going to war. You don't hear that phrase much anymore, but for many years after, when a player had a strong game going, TV announcers would use the phrase, "so and so is really going to war."

One more and I will quit. Rupp was actually a Colonel in the US Army. I think it was Esinhower who put Rupp in charge of physical fitness among the troops. He gave Rupp the rank of Colonel so his orders would have to be followed. There are pictures of Rupp and his coaching staff in the book wearing the army fatigues at UK practices.

I am not going to post it on the other topic, but there is a thread on mobster movies. I once knew a real live mob guy. I had customers from all over the USA, so I met quite a few people of varied backgrounds. This guy had been a debt collector for a major Las Vegas casino. He was probably 6'4 and 280, but when I knew him, he had a heart condition and was retired. Actually I think he was laundering money, but that is a guess. He was the most polite guy I ever met. Always please and thank you for everything.

He told me a story about collecting a debt on a federal judge and how he spent a couple of days in jail over that one. One of his drivers told me he had six Rottweiler running loose in his house and a loaded gun in every room. You could buy certain things cheaper from him than you could buy from the manufacturer. Rumor was that he had killed a man for the manufacturer and that is how he was paid.

When he first came to me, he needed information about where and who to buy certain lamp related parts from. I gave him the info and he always seemed to like me after that. We would talk while I was loading his truck. Since he had heart problems, I'd get him a stool and load for him. We would carry on conversations while I loaded his truck. One day I was kind of complaining about my daughters at the time boyfriend. He looked me straight in the eyes and said, "Just say the word and I promise he will never trouble you again." Now I didn't like the kid, but I didn't want him dead, so I told my mobster friend, "Thanks, but I can handle it myself." My mobster friend died about 15 years ago.

First time I got in a game........it was the fourth grade..........I took a sideline in bounds pass and made a basket for the other team...................I got excited and didn't know which basket was which............I just saw an open path to the basket........and I was off......a picture perfect left handed lay up........only kid in the defensive court.........short basketball career.........I didn't hardly get off the bench to practice after that..........

No where to go but UP from there. Your coach made a huge mistake. You could've been basketball's Bob Uecker.

Church leagues were always rougher up north than the rest. Saw more fights at those league games than anywhere else.
